CI Wrestling Thread #56

Dynamite did 702,000 and a .23 last night. The WNBA game with Indiana did 2.54 million, most watched WNBA game on cable ever.

Being reported a couple of places TK is electing to add time missed due to injury to Rey Fenix's contract. Guess that means we won't see the Lucha Bros on WWE TV for a while. Seems rather petty on his part.

Totally different subject the WWE Vault youtube channel is live streaming an NWA show from the Omni in February 1987 on Sunday. Here's the card.

Bill Dundee vs. Dutch Mantell.
Bob Armstrong vs. Jimmy Garvin.
Arn Anderson vs. Brad Armstrong.
NWA TV Champion Tully Blanchard vs. Wahoo McDaniel.
Robert Gibson & Ron Garvin vs. The Midnight Express, Bobby Eaton & Dennis Condrey.
Dusty Rhodes & NWA United States Champion Nikita Koloff vs. Ivan Koloff & Vladimir Petrov.
NWA World Tag Team Champions Rick Rude & Manny Fernandez vs. The Road Warriors.
NWA World Champion Ric Flair vs. Barry Windham.

That card sounds amazing.

Lost in all the Vince stuff in the doc is the fact that Austin said he doesn't believe CTE is a thing. The interview was taped either in 2021 or '22 but how can a former athlete not believe CTE exists? Maybe he's changed his opinion since and I get not wanting to blame chair shots or wrestling for what Benoit did but that one kinda shocked me. It's like someone you grew up watching saying the earth is flat.

I actually think KO should go to AEW. He’s good friends with the bucks and Adam Cole. Also I think he’s maxed out with wwe - he’s not getting the world title and his best work was years ago when he was hhh chosen one as Wwe champ chicken shit heel run and his time with Jericho.

Honestly the last time I watched a ton of WWE was when KO was feuding with Roman and they had the last man standing match. KO handcuffed Roman to something outside the ring and no one could find the key to the handcuff so the ref literally just stopped counting at like 5 for around 30 seconds until the handcuffs could be removed. That was just BAD.

What happened with Copeland might happen with Owens, although I think Owens will take more time off for his family. AEW isn't going anywhere so why rush. Copeland clearly wanted to continue immediately, it was WWE who didn't have anything for him and didn't see the value in an aging Edge. I can't blame them there. His return seemed mostly stale and he doesn't add viewers.

Having said that, Owens is a Triple H guy through and through, is getting older (he recently dyed his beard however), and as a slightly heavier fella who's very athletic, he might not wanna go back to that carefree indy style every week. AEW always has injuries. KO hasn't had a slew of injuries in his WWE career because of that safer style.

Despite poor ticket sales and social media trolling, AEW continues to conduct weekly episodes at big arenas. Many fans have suggested Tony Khan to move to smaller arenas like NXT and TNA do, but Tony doesn't listen.

Now, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful has disclosed why Tony Khan prefers doing shows at big arenas only -

"I've asked about this a number of times and I've been given a number of reasons they book the venues they do. It's very common for music acts to book large venues and curtain them off as well. Amenities, how nice the venue is, ease of access, parking, mailing lists, the ability to open up additional sections, concession staff are all reasons AEW chooses to run bigger venues."

I mean, I don't go to see a movie and then concern myself with the amount of people in the theater as a fan. Social media loves to shit on AEW and focus on this. On television, you're certainly not seeing all of the crowd anyway.

Tony's not freaking out about money but I really hope they become very story focused to try and get new fans.

Ya but didn’t Tony just say he’s focusing on week to week booking so that’s the opposite of story focused?

Also when you have a handful of people with creative control they aren’t looking at the big picture.

I think the reason TK gets trolled online is b/c AEW is more and more just a kid playing with his wrestling figures and nothing about business minded decisions.

Any other wrestling company would scale down the venue but TK is absent minded in that regard.

It also doesn’t help the jags are the laughing stock of the nfl and he’s the jags director of analytics.

So ya I think that’s why TK is getting trolled b/c he’s just wasting money and he’s like ehh who cares.

You're correct. Week-to-week booking is the opposite of the strategy you need to get new fans

I listen to 83 Weeks with Eric Bischoff and I've also heard Russo (as annoying as his accent is) discuss AEW and I absolutely believe AEW could benefit by having an outsider be brought in who has actually lived this, understands TV, and what to do to bring new fans to the product (and keep them), and also knows what doesn't work.

I like AEW a lot (I was a big ROH guy). They obviously have flaws but they have an incredible roster of talent. Still, you gotta do something that moves the needle instead of catering to the smarks. That's a very niche base. Drop the blood in nearly every match for one, but like Bischoff and Russo say, without a story, two guys in the ring doesn't mean shit.

They need to get that Giulia to the big roster asap. That other girl just couldnt go with her.

Hey friends, sure no one missed me while I was in Virginia the last four days.

So we are to believe Nielsen magically found 300,000 extra viewers for Raw. I saw Thurston made a correction so it must be true. Don't pay much attention to Alfred or Raj as they are the ones who usually post the AEW numbers, only when they are bad.

Why in the heck are Danielson and Okada wrestling? Has to be some screwy finish.

Pretty good episode of NXT, thought for sure Guilia was going to win on her first night. They apparently had one of those "AEW sellouts." According to WrestleTix they sold 7,000 seats in a 16,000 seat arena.

Also heavily rumored the new AEW TV deal may actually get announced tomorrow.
