the top 10 in 1996

1. Shawn Michaels
2. The Giant
3. Sting
4. Kenta Kobashi
5. AHMED JOHNSON
6. Kevin Nash
7. Rey Mysetrio
8. Hulk Hogan
9. Sabu
10. Ric Flair
I don’t recall exactly but I think 1996 Ahmed was in the midst of a main event push that got halted b/c he wasn’t that great of a worker

I was a big wcw guy, i thought they had a better weekly show during the late 90s... obviously turned over to wwe once the rock and Austin got white hot. I think I remember falling out of favour with wcw when they changed the logo and the set of nitro.I bought vhs tapes of ECW ppvs and enjoyed them but never could find or watch their weekly show. I don't remember seeing batista, cena, or orton on the card in wwe so I was out on wwe before they came.

I tuned in last year when aew debuted on TNT but their talent just wasn't that interesting. now that they've signed punk, BD, and cole i am really interested. these guys legitimize aew a little bit and make for a better show. aew's matches are entertaining, a bit goofy, but entertaining. they are actually giving an effort in their weekly shows unlike a match you would see on raw or smackdown.

What I enjoy the most about aew and what will keep me tuning in are the fans. The crowd involvement in aew is really awesome and they need that to continue. they should consider paying people to sit throughout the stadium to keep that going.

punk may have wanted to wrestle darby allin first but I think that was a mistake. i don't think that really helped darby at all, but I don't care about allin to begin with. aew hasn't done a good job building their own guys, save for hangman, so I am not sure who they could have paired punk up with. they don't really have any heels.

aew is a work in progress, I'm interested, but they have to keep fine tuning. I heard on konan and discos show a week or so ago that aew had a job posting that sound like was fit for bruce Prichard? I wonder what happened to that? they talked about only a few guys who have the experience that could fill that role. Paul heyman, Prichard or jeff jarrett. with conrad thompson having a podcast with double j now, I imagine he's the one that fills the role. seems like conrad and aew have some sort of connection.
Kenny Omega is ranked #1 in the PWI top 500 that was released today. Moxley 6th, Rhodes 11th, Allin 14th, Jericho 19th, Orange Cassidy 21st, MJF 26th, PAC 33rd, Page 34th, Miro 38th

10 of the top 40 is pretty good for a two-year old company whose roster size is considerably less than WWE/NXT and NJPW. Not sure how that indicates they aren’t building up their own guys.

Newbies Danielson and Cole rank 36th and 37th, not that AEW has anything to do with that, just throwing it out there.

I could be wrong, but I think the AEW roster has surpassed WWE at this point. They have something like 110 active members male and female

Cole should be in top 15 easy - that’s a joke - it’s no wonder I haven’t read pwi in over 20 years

Foley's statement is the most damning thing that can be said about WWE. If guys don't see it as the end-all, be-all - they will eventually have an inferior roster and product.

Maybe they already do?

I preferred NWA/WCW until WCW forced WWE to get good in the late 90s. There were a couple of years that both shows were good and it was fun.

Maybe AEW is making the leap. Hopefully they jettison the worst things and figure others out.

They will have growing pains. Guys will complain about TV time and placement.

I was a WCW kid over wwf as well. Pretty sure Cody was. I know the Bucks were. Probably why it has such a peak WCW feel at times.

Will Ospreay took a shot at Omega over the PWI 500 and Omega swatted him.

Seems like I remember seeing Ospreay being part of the Jericho cruise. Maybe he could do something either before or after.

I did the math on the PWI top 100. I know many in the top 100 compete in numerous promotions, but the vast majority of them competed primarily or only in one promotion, so that's the promotion I assigned them to.

22 of the top 100 is from the WWE - not including NXT since NXT was more or less treated as a separate promotion most of the time
17 are from AEW
13 are from NJPW
9 are from NXT
8 are from Impact
6 are from ROH
No other promotion had more than four in the top 100

The average rating of NJPW wrestlers was 39.46
The average for AEW was 43.53
The average for WWE was 46.41
The average for NXT was 48.44
The average for ROH was 58.50
The average for Impact was 71.13

Throw in all the crossover guys that can come in for some guest appearances in AEW's roster > WWE main roster (as in not counting NXT).

Prob pretty accurate

Pretty much agree with this like I do 99% of you and Kmac posts

I think that’s part of my gripe with aew is I enjoyed nwa/wcw so much in the 80s/90s I feel like it’s an injustice to replicate it which I think Cody is trying to do -
as much as I am not fond of omega he’s not wrong - bullet club was legit and now it’s a shell of 5 years ago and njpw is as well - other than Ibushi/Okada/naito the rest is meh to me

So when is the NXT exodus going to happen in favor of meatheads that are on the verge of a roid rage that Vince prefers since they are apparently done recruiting from the indy promotions?

The Elite is the new Bullet Club. If AEW keeps getting bigger they are going to be the modern day nWo.

BodySlam, the ones who broke the Danielson and Punk stories, are now saying people in wwe expect Owens to leave and that he’s made indications as such.

I mean ya I would absolutely believe it - he’s been misused over a year now - so does he end up with the Cole/omega/bucks group

Welp, a stable basically calling out Punk? Hmmmm

I see where this is going and like it.

Pretty excited to see some booking that sometimes is exactly what it should be.

I’ve always liked Team Tazz. Punk has said he’d like to work with Starks and that could be a lot of fun with promos.

I can't believe they cut off Suzuki's entrance. Enjoyed he and Moxley but it needed at least five more minutes. Also liked the whole MJF-Pillman thing too.

For modern wrestling, AEW is on fire right now. I say that as someone who has been critical of them in the past.

I watched Raw and Dynamite this week.

One show was boring and predictable with the same ole matches we see week after week after week, the formation of another randomly thrown together women’s tag tram, and a tag team turmoil match designed more to fill time than be good and the order of elimination was easy to see coming. All in front of a dead crowd.

The other show had matches I’ve never seen before, unscripted promos from guys who can talk, solid vingettes and angles, a good women’s match (but not 4 women’s matches), debuting and new talents with equal or greater star power than anyone on the other show, and a red hot crowd with 90s energy as far as fans being excited about the show they’re watching.
