CI Wrestling Thread #56

I may be in the minority, but I don’t think 95% of wrestling fans give a tenth of a shit about what Punk did in UFC.

I know the fanbases can overlap, but a majority of MMA fans I know don’t like wrestling at all.

I’ve never been that big on MMA, so a pro wrestler’s MMA record is irrelevant to me in the world of pro wrestling.

Morning, few random thoughts

IMO All Out was the best US Show since Wrestlemania 30. A couple of the Wrestle Kingdom shows may have been better, but not by much.

Everything I've seen or heard was that Danielson was supposed to debut at the Grand Slam show in New York. However AEW is worried the plug could get pulled on the NYC shows again even this close to them happening so they went on and did it. They didn't want him debuting in front of 500 people at Daily's Place.

My only criticism is to me it took away from the Cole debut, they should have done that on Dynamite this week maybe.

When it's done right someone gets elevated in a loss and that's what happened with Darby. I could be wrong but I thought Punk asked Tony Khan for Darby to be his first match.

Punk also said he wants to do him and Danielson versus the Bucks, that would work for me.

Thanks I'll hang up and listen.

Punk requested Darby. He wanted Darby as his first match because he really believes in Darby.
As far as the debuts, I think that was the best way to do it. It builds a story, a story I think that will change AEW forever. This is gonna be some NWO vs WCW level shit I think. I’m good with it. I think the internet is buzzing for all of it

Bryan's theme is terrible. Should have just went all in with Valkyrie.

Additionally Cole's theme is probably the best one in AEW now. Probably his best one.

I feel the exact opposite of Danielson and Coles themes. Bryan’s is maybe the best but i don’t care for Coles. I don’t think the version of Danielson’s at All Out had any singing. If they take the singing out it’s much better but that beat is awesome. Not to mention in the background you have chants of “you’re gonna get you fuc*ing head kicked in” like they used to do for him pre wwe.

Word is that TK did attempt to get the rights to "The Final Countdown," but they want like $50K per performance, and it just isn't worth that much. Rumored that Europe doesn't like their own song (or more precisely, they hate that that is the only song of theirs that anyone wants to hear), so they price it out of the market.

I went to see Def Leppard in 1988 at Riverbend, and Europe opened for them. After Europe left the stage, their lead singer had to walk back on stage and ask if we wanted to hear more so they could play their "encore," because no one gave a sh!t and were ready to see Def Leppard.

I heard something similar about Randy Savage. A guy on the Observer message board runs indy shows in Washington. They tried to book savage soon after WCW went under. He wanted something like $50,000 to do the show. The guy that runs the show went "are you kidding me?" and his manager just said "he really doesn't want to do it, but he will for $50,000"

Which is where I think Braun Strowman was coming from when he was rumored to be asking 6 figures for appearances.

sucks for him but Bray Wyatt is going to have to change his look completely to get over anywhere else. I really think if she shows up actually looking like Bray Wyatt people are just going to expect voodoo and crap.

Godfather wouldnt' have gotten over if he came out dressed like Papa Shango.

So what is Strowman and Bray Wyatt going to do? I haven't saw anyone say anything on here for a few days about them.
Strowman's 90-day non-compete has expired, so he is currently free to wrestle wherever he wants. He announced in the last day or so that he will be participating in the Free the Narrative 2 PPV with EC3 on October 1st. However, Strowman is a thoroughly WWE-made wrestler, he didn't start in the Indies, so I don't know how well he would fit in in AEW.

Wyatt is considered to be a creative mind, and was recently seen in the crowd at an AEW event. However, he still has another ~2 months before his non-compete expires.

Rumor currently is that neither is on AEW's radar, and Impact will most likely be where both of them land (assuming Strowman doesn't just re-sign with WWE).

SRS implied that Bray will be going to Impact. Makes sense since that’s where Hardy did all of his crazy creative stuff.

Yeah put me in the I don't care group. One is scripted and one isn't. It's like saying you like football but not lingerie football. Enjoy both but don't compare them.
Ya that’s i don’t care either and apparently neither do the supermarks- for real I’m a little Leary of db saying Vince was holding him back being protective- really hope he doesn’t get hurt - but aew gave big show the second to last match so I guess tk isn’t worried

I’d actually heard the number for Final Countdown was in the six figures PER use. But even if it’s $50k that’s still ridiculous. But yeah I listened to a clip of Meltzer saying they tried to get the song but it was too cost prohibitive for even TK.

I think what he ended up with is great though. Yeah final countdown woulda been cool but Bryan is gonna be over as hell no matter what his theme is.

Strowman and Scott D’amore have both said things that make it sound like he’s a lock for Impact. Also it appears Strowman’s new name will be “Titan”.

No idea on Bray, I’d probably say impact also. The only thing that makes me pause a tad is TK said the other day that he plans on bringing in 4-6 new wrestlers in the coming months. This was before Ruby/Cole/Danielson. So there’s 1-3 potential people left on his radar. That plus the current Dark Order storyline of the faction infighting and being split makes me think they possibly bring him in as a new leader.

Talking above about Bray needing to change his look, if this picture is real and not photoshopped then he DEFINITELY needs to keep his beard.

That’s a match that, to me, could’ve been built up later to be huge. Why waste it on Punks first match. Yes, Darby is an upper mid card, but isn’t everyone picking him to be a breakout star unlike a guy like QT, who on one cares about.

I know the vast majority of AEW marks don’t care about long term storytelling…they just want to see a match, but I don’t know. It’s why I don’t watch. The mentality of fans and bookers today don’t make sense to me. It’s just cheering moves, etc.
Hangman Page and Kenny Omega have been in a storyline for 2 years lol…..some people really just say anything.

Settle down, Steve.

I certainly never said they’d only last six months. Ridiculous. They’re a fun option but many have tried and failed to match WWE. AEW will never be on that level. They can last awhile but you won’t be doing the wrestling hipster shtick 20 years from now regarding AEW.

They’re fun. They’re new. Hopefully they can maintain it but chill out on the absurd predictions.
Time to expose some bad takes from "haytas."

For real if you told the aew marks 2 years into it they’d sign 20 ex-wwe guys they’d be mad but somehow they justify every signing

A friend is over and we’re going to watch this nwa show. We were curious about CM Punks rating for Dynamite. With all this hype and talk, I am shocked the number is this low

Looks like he has appeal with the modern fan, but casual and lapsed don’t seem to be taking an interest.

but the friends I was with the other day said they really have no interest

CM Punk ratings
🤷‍♂️

If the rumors are true, the "cream" are cutting wrestlers left and right and looking to sell the business.

One fed is growing at a dizzying pace, the other is downsizing. Regardless of your personal preferences or beliefs, if you don't recognize that AEW has been wildly successful as a fed despite WWE maneuvering in multiple ways to undercut them, you are deceiving yourself.

And, I dare say, the best is yet to come.
I dare say, prophetic?

Oh geez

WWE Superstar Kevin Owens' contract reportedly expires in January 2022, per Sean Ross Sapp on Fightful Select (h/t Aaron Rift of NoDQ.com).

“We’ve learned from a WWE official that WWE restructured several contracts ahead of the pandemic, and for whatever reason, Kevin Owens’ deal was changed to expire in January 2022," the report stated.

"We were not told of any additional terms of the deal or specifically why it was shortened. We’ll work to find out if any other deals were adjusted.”

As Rift noted, Owens told TVA Sports in May 2018 that he had recently signed a five-year deal with WWE, so the latest report represents a significant change his contract structure.

The latest Owens report drops on the same day that he deleted a tweet that may have alluded to a reunion some of his former stable members who are now in AEW. Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc. explained.

"The speculation began when Owens tweeted the coordinates to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. He then changed the location in his Twitter bio to “Almost there,” which is seen as a reference to the Mount Rushmore coordinates, which have since been deleted from his Twitter feed.
"Mount Rushmore is the name of a stable Owens was in with Adam Cole and AEW World Tag Team Champions The Young Bucks in 2013-2014. Owens ended up leaving the stable when he signed with WWE in 2014. He left the group with a triple superkick from Cole and The Bucks."
Owens has been with WWE since 2014.

Why are justifications necessary? WWE is the BMOC. Did you think AEW would just develop indy talent and bring no one in? They have developed their own talent, and they have been successful, but they can bring in extremely recognizable and talented wrestlers who are and advance their federation.

Because TK said he was going to build around young talent and not sign a bunch of ex-wwe guys yet outside of omega/bucks/Cody your top tier guys are essentially all ex-wwe guys so another way of saying it where would aew be if wwe didn’t release any of this talent

You must have some notification when I post b/c within an hour you always reply -like clockwork - all good tho

I’ve long thought Owens would jump to AEW as soon as he could due to him being close friends with the Bucks. And you know it has to pain Styles seeing all his buddies in AEW having a blast and he’s stuck in wwe.

AEW fans don’t where a talent has been as long as they fit in. 2 years ago when people said that stuff they were talking about people like Heath Slater. People that were never really anything in wwe. Nobody ever thought wwe would be dumb enough to release the people they have. AEW woulda been stupid not to get some of these guys. They’ve only signed a handful of the 100+ wrestlers let go or leaving on their own from wwe. And they are all big name guys or have ties to people in AEW.

You’re smarter than this. To act like they haven’t built numerous people, several to main event level, is disingenuous.
