CI Wrestling Thread #56

I cannot believe how far they have milked basically a six month to a year window in 1998. They never should’ve brought him back in 2016 or 2019. He can’t wrestle for shit. His appeal ended long ago and he’s just super into himself.
Does he get reaction from fans? I haven’t seen any of his various returns since that Brock match in like 04. (I do remember seeing him barely getting Bray Wyatt up for that jackhammer

Well yeah but something tells me that at no point in my life will I buy a ticket to a wrestling show and one of the women will pick me out of the crowd and get naughty with me in the ring. When I was a kid it was conceivable that if I got a front row ticket Bret would give me his glasses.
It won't happen with that attitude...

My luck it would be Nila Rose or Nia Jax.

Sneak peak for the. Corny show later: they go over Scott Teals book and selling tickets in the 50s

Note: I’m friends with Scott and he’s a good dude. If you’re looking for historical wrestling books, check his out

OT: I could obviously name guys like Benoit or Buck Zumhoff, but who is your most hated wrestler ever?

This week, Brian (Last) asked me if I could go back and do art for that Eddie Kingston interview after Aew went off the air and I realized “Kingston is my least favorite wrestler ever…and that covers a lot of ground”.
Baron Corbin & Hulk Hogan

I get Corbin but why hogan - the biz wouldn’t be anywhere where it is today without him - sure his image has taken a hit the last few years but only a handful of people hated him in the 80s and 90s
Because he’s a shitty wrestler. Every time I watch his matches I get bored. I can’t deny what he did for wrestling but he was never a great watch in the ring. I hear his matches in Japan were good but I’ve never seen them. I’m also not into super basic gimmicks like the super hero patriotic thing. It’s not interesting to me. People were easily amused between the 70s-90s.

I care a lot about what a guy can do in the ring. I will almost always get turned off of if they can’t do anything more than some clotheslines, headlocks, wristlocks, and body slams. I also don’t like superhuman type gimmicks. Just last night I was watching his turn to NWO too and saying brother over and over again is just annoying. Not to mention him fumbling over words.

All of that and I’m not even mentioning who he was as a person. He obviously had his personal short comings and that just adds to it for me.

I’ll have to check that book out

You must be trolling 70s-90s was one of the best eras in terms of gates and quality of booking and wrestling - Memphis/wwf/awa/nwa/wcw says hello

I know I have heard him mentioned as being in the old Memphis territory before but did anyone ever see Andre there? With as much as I went to the Gardens and watched TV every week, I don't ever remember hearing about him being local.

He didn’t come here much. He had a couple runs in the 70s (he would usually be here for a week). There is the famous Lawler “beating” Andre story (it’s hilarious with Terry Funk..I’ll see if it’s on the Cornette channel).

there’s some pics floating around of him with Jackie Fargo and Eddie marlin

his last appearance was in March of 83. The Memphis one is on video with him, Lawler and Stagger lee (koko ware) facing Jimmy hart, Bobby Eaton and the bruise brothers (Porkchop Cash and Mad Dog Boyd).

Lawler didn’t travel to the shows in Louisville (I was at that one) and Evansville though

Omega and Corny engaged in a little back-and-forth banter on twitter over the dumb@ss fan who tried to get in the ring with Jericho and MJF on Wednesday:

Methinks Jim Cornette is "living the gimmick" and rapt in a kayfabe world where he is unconsciously becoming what he despises (i.e. his bombastic language is "a call to action" a la Trump). If you believe Trump is responsible for Jan. 6, then you have to accept Corny is responsible for the schmuck fan who tried to enter the ring on AEW Dynamite.

You don't have to be all d!ck all the time, double down on bad takes and burn all your bridges. Pull back a bit and figure out perspective.

Leg drops, wrist locks, head locks, etc just aren’t my thing. I understand if other people enjoy it I just don’t. As for booking and what not I’m not talking about the entire wrestling scene. I’m talking about hogan and his gimmick specifically. He’s not interesting.

IMO, it's beyond absurd to compare the two and say if you believe A, then you must believe B. I don't believe Cornette ever suggested running-in or that AEW has fake ratings. He's never suggested that fans of his podcasts show up to protest, boo, or hold up Corny face signs. He's never done a "call to action" that if you show up, you real patriots (or real wrestling fans in this case) can change the result of the match/event.

I'm not a fan of the long take political rants he'll sometimes do, and his stance on covid is a little nuts (he's gotten the vaccine but says he'll still never leave his house), but to randomly bring Trump into this...I don't see the comparison.

I don't want to go any further down the political rabbit hole, but the comparison is valid and apt despite your mental gymnastics to persuade otherwise.
Odd. Don't want to go further, but you're the one that brought it up out of nowhere. Then you say it's a valid comparison and that I'm doing "mental gymnastics." If you don't want to discuss it, don't bring it into the thread my man.

Honestly comparing Cornette to Trump is the first thing I thought of when that guy tweeted to him.

Mostly because of how angry it would make Cornette to be compared to Trump for any reason but it’s not an outlandish comparison.

So WWE pulled the Broken Skull Sessions with Kevin Nash that was supposed to air tonight. No reason given yet.

Last week they pulled the Lex Luger special that was scheduled to air.

Was wondering about that. I was looking to watch it tonight.

Saw earlier that they removed Daniel Bryan from all future projects as well.

Crazy spot from Tony Deppen and Dragon Lee tonight.

Speaking oh roh has anyone taken a bigger dive the last few years than dalton castle?

a few years ago he was roh world champion back when the roster was decent and it was rumored wwe was interested in him - now he can barely get on the ppv card with a massively reduced talent roster

Politics aside I think social media has a lot to do with some of those problems discussed above and it makes fans feel like the talent is more attainable than before - take for example some dweeb on Twitter talking smack to Alexa bliss and body shaming her - stuff like that didn’t happen years ago because there was a clear line between fans and talent but social media has blurred that completely
