CI Wrestling Thread #56

I think JR is one of the best, but I wouldn’t have him do weekly shows at this point. He served his purpose of being a familiar voice to draw people in. No one is all the sudden going to start watching AEW right now because of JR, and no one will leave if he isn’t doing commentary anymore.

He’s still great at the backstage, sit down interview formats and he could still call some of the bigger matches. I’m just not sure he has it in him for weekly tv anymore.
I think this is right. JR has the best interviews before big fights. As of this point in his career, he is better taped then live. I loved his interview with the bucks vs omega/page. He’s special, make him feel special.

I have the same opinion of wrestling commentators and sports commentators. There’s beloved commentators who have done this for decades but you’ve got to make room for new people/talent.

This is the CI wrestling thread I missed. We gotta get some of y’all in OVW for a one night only match. But he’s gonna book the matches?

Zomg can’t wait to see how zmark spins this one “aew didn’t want her…they want Tessa Blanchard”

if she went to aew “zomg Andrade wanted her and now she’s here”
This dude is so ridiculous. Typical smark who doesn’t know shit but feels smug and behaves like a hipster.

“Psst. I only like underground wrestling. Not mainstream wrestling. AEW is gonna bankrupt the WWE with its coolness. Meltzer reported it.”

I imagine two years ago he was like “You ever heard of PWG? It’s like the best thing ever. Only behind Nagasaki and Otani Nakamura Chang at the Tokyo Dome. Meltzer gave it six stars. Look up Kenny Omega, bro.”

So Vega is back in WWE? And apparently on twitch, Aleister said he is not going back to WWE.

So if she’s back on twitch than wwe gave in?

Crazy as dispensable they think their roster is they brought her back.

Completely get Joe getting brought back especially as an nxt enforcer if that buys him time before he’s medically cleared. Joe is a main event caliber guy.

Give Hhh credit for bringing him back. I still was shocked he was even thought of being let go. Even if he never wrestles again, he has value beyond that (whicH HHH obviously recognized)

I’m gonna be honest I get people want to create this AEW vs WWE rivalry……but it’s getting exhausting. This is 2021 not 2001…..people are smart enough to understand what they’re watching. I like both programs (outside of most of Raw) and I love certain guys from both companies. I’m tired of hearing people bash either if I’m being honest. The company war just isn’t appealing to me.

Well this isn’t good

The July 1 episode of IMPACT Wrestling drew a record-low rating on AXS TV, according to Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics.

IMPACT has drawn over 100,000 viewers consistently throughout 2021, but the July 1 show was only watched by 69,000 total viewers. This beat out the previous record low on AXS TV of 78,000 from the September 8, 2020 episode.

I feel bad for impact. They have some good storylines and content but people aren’t invested in their wrestlers. I still think Tony Khan should buy impact or NWA.

I've been enjoying Impact over the last few months. Apparently I am one of the few. It's probably still the highest rated thing on AXS TV.

In other news Jimmy Uso arrested for DUI.

How many is that for Jimmy and what will that do for his part of the Roman storyline?

2011 - DUI - put on probation
2013 - violated probation
February 2019 - pulled over driving the wrong way on one way street, cop smelled alcohol, Jimmy got out of the car and took his shirt off threatening cops while they were talking to Naomi, arrested for disorderly conduct.
July 2019 - DUI - found not guilty but video shows he was definitely swerving and going 86 in a 45.
July 2021 - Another DUI

Dude needs help.

That’s a guy who will eventually end up killing someone. There’s so many ways to get a ride home nowadays, no excuse for those actions and he should get a harsh punishment.

Considering how much drugs wrestlers used to do, I bet Vince is perfectly fine with this.

I reckon Funk has really taken a turn for the worse since losing his wife 2 years ago.

Jimmy only has a job because of his family ties.

Speaking of wrestlers in bad shape, I saw a pic of Lex Luger on Twitter a couple weeks back and it made me so sad. He’s back in a wheelchair and is so thin. Probably weighs 180lbs to 160lbs. It was at some type of meet and greet/signing thing. But he was smiling and seemed to be in a good mental state.

Its just crazy seeing people I grew up watching who was built like gods and now they’re frail and in wheelchairs at a relatively young age.

Steroids, painkillers, muscle relaxers, alcohol and a job that requires falling on your back 30 times a night for 300 nights a year will do that to a fella.

It’s sad when a wrestler dies at 60 and people think he was “old” for a wrestler.

NXT has the Great American Bash tonight. A year ago Keith Lee beat Adam Cole for the title, seems like an eternity ago. Anyway here's what's scheduled.

Kyle O'Reilly vs. Adam Cole.
Johnny Gargano and NXT Champion Karrion Kross will go face-to-face.
WWE NXT Tag Team Champions MSK vs. Tommaso Ciampa & Timothy Thatcher.
Hit Row will host a Championship Cypher for new NXT North American Champion Isaiah "Swerve" Scott.
WWE NXT Women's Tag Team Champions Candice LaRae & Indi Hartwell vs. Io Shirai & Zoey Stark.
Million Dollar Champion LA Knight vs. Cameron Grimes.

Yup this is true - worse than nfl players especially in the attitude era and before when people ate chair shots like crazy…

…makes you wonder if this covid 15 month era might preserve some time with some careers b/c of the reduced work load
