CI Wrestling Thread #56

Two "milestones" from the last two days.

Ten years ago yesterday was the CM Punk "pipe bomb" promo.

23 years ago today was the Foley-Taker Hell In A Cell Match

there’s things like Owens death, etc I’d change if I could go back in time, but for wrestling…I’d scrap that Foley match from existence

Everyone says he’s the nicest guy, but he’s probably done more damage to wrestling than anyone. Probably controversial to say, but that’s ok.

After AEW Dynamite went off the air on Saturday night, Eddie Kingston stepped into the ring to cut a promo on WWE.

Speaking to the live crowd in Jacksonville, Kingston said he was "burning another bridge" in reference to what he was going to say about WWE.

"Ladies and gentlemen, AEW cares about their fans. Because we are not here just to get ourselves a paycheck. We're here every week —with you people, without you people—and we come out here and we bust our asses. We love professional wrestling!
"You saw a match between Kenny Omega and my dude, Jungle Boy, that you will not see on the other channel. You will not see legends who are respected on the other channel. You will not see people like me and my best friend (Penta) on the other channel. And you will not see the heart that everybody in that locker room has on the other channel."

It’s like watching a Roman match, you know he isn’t going to lose but I like to see how you get there.

Of course I say that and SuperCena will return and beat him at Summerslam.

It has to be Page that beats Omega, but how long do you put it off. Maybe one of the New York shows?
Could likely be All Out due to Kenny’s injuries but I think they originally wanted to do it at Full Gear.

Speaking of CM Punk- what a douche that guy is. No one has killed their appeal more than that guy post wrestling. Always bitching, got wrecked in actual fights.

He was recently complaining again about not being in the main event at WM 29. First, glad he didn’t get it. Second, he might be the only talent to bitch about working with Taker at Mania.

Lol so ridiculous. “Pay attention to us!” Perhaps worry about selling your product instead of constantly having another company’s name in your mouth.

hate it all you want, but he's speaking to the crowd and they ate it up.
I’m sure they did. They’re already an established customer base. If you’re at an AEW show, you’re already a smark. Nothing is needed to sell you.

Simply just create a product that stands on its own and stop worrying about trying to compete with WWE. They’re never going to be able to do that on a global stage like that but they can be a good addition.

I would probably have to agree with this, and I was a big fan of Punk. Watched him work his way up through the independents, OVW, ECW, to WWE. But since then I’ve found him unbearable to listen to. He seems like one of those people who just has to always be grumpy, when he has no reason for it.
If he returned it would generate some short term interest, not sure if it would last long though.

Remember when they first started aew and they’d continually say they were going to ignore the wwe, blah blah

Thank you. He’s just a miserable dude. Why fans still want to see him…I don’t know why

I think the enamoration with punk is b/c he is one of the few wwe guys that got to leave on his terms so between that and his shoot promo there’s a lot of “what could have been/should have been” but really he would have never gotten to rock/Austin status or even Cena.

If Wrecking Wrestling Entertainment keeps putting out crap like they have on Raw they just might be able to compete with them. It's a train wreck and shows no signs of slowing.

Anyone ever go to Slick's church up there in Louisville? I thought about goin to Shiloh Baptist to meet him one day. My two all time favorite managers both live in Louisville.

As much as I like AEW I wish they would stop with the constant WWE bashing. I don't know if it was on his podcast or where but said something about Shotzi Blackheart making fun of the crash pad. Of course WWE did the exact same thing at HIAC but she made no comment on that.

Anyway he said something along the lines of "when you get fired from WWE I'll make sure you never get hired by AEW."

I like Jericho but he's needs to lighten up a little. I've also noticed Tony Khan has stopped tweeting too, that's probably for the best.

I get that it’s a cheap pop, and the live fans love it. But I’ve been watching TNA and every other independent take shots at WWE for years now, it’s old. It’s also lame when a good portion of your top guys came from WWE. Sometimes I wonder if anyone in AEW watched TNA, because they’ve made some of the same mistakes that doomed them. TNA gave the blueprint on what a TV wrestling show shouldn’t do.

Yeah agree. He had an uppercard ceiling.

It’s funny: he’s such a miserable p****, that goodwill he had for the pipe bomb and leaving the wwe…no one really cares except extreme marks.

Cornette always says “How can I miss you if you won’t go away” is true, but you spend the time away being miserable…

you may not remember, but the old Poffo icw from the early 80s…they’d spend half their time bashing the Memphis product instead of promoting their own show…and Jarrett never acknowledged them until they bailed out and he brought in Savage and Angelo to face Lawler in December of 83

The urge to be snarky and point out hypocrisy, and the tendency of websites to play up any controversy, means that there will always be volleys back and forth. It's nowhere near a "hot" war by any stretch of the imagination, but there will always be skirmishes.

I also wanted to quote Jericho's tweet in full, because your summary makes it sound a lot worse. I think it's snarky but also fair, saying wrestlers should be sticking up for each other:

So people laugh at that sort of stuff but there’s no reason to because this is the real deal and it can happen at any time. Best of luck to anybody in our business, and anybody that bags on somebody who’s taking a chance and putting their bodies on the line can really f*** off. Especially people in the business. I could say some names. There’s a couple of chicks in WWE who said some stuff and they should probably not have said that. They probably weren’t trained any better, and in 6 months they’ll probably be asking us for a job anyways and I’ll remember that, so we’ll leave it at that.

I was just a twinkle in my dad’s eye at that time. But it goes back to what others have been saying, just worry about building your own product. An occasional shot is fine, but it seems like every podcast or live show someone is taking a shot now. I think AEW has some decent young talent, and that’s what the focus should be on.

I don’t watch WWE, so I don’t need AEW bringing them up or it’ll run its course like TNA.

I’ll never watch, but it’s still incredible that in two years, they haven’t grown their fan base whatsoever.

I was out a month or so ago with several guys that like wrestling. They were shocked that AEW, a National program, has the same viewership as the old Memphis territory alone.

Thanks I didn't realize it was a tweet, what I had read made it sound much worse.

They remind me of TNA circa 2010. Rather than focusing on building their product, they focused on taking pot shots at WWE, yet also spent a lot of money bringing in and pushing ex WWE guys.

Wrestler from WWE says something on social media about AEW.
AEW wrestler responds.
WWE Fans: "AEW can't keep WWE's name out of their mouths!"

I'm seriously questioning your grip on reality with that "AEW 2021 is like TNA 2010" take. That's beyond ludicrous.

Dynamite did 649,000 viewers on Saturday night, not too bad. Will be interesting to see what the number is when they go back to Wednesday.
Wednesday is going to be a hot show too. Last show in Jacksonville for a bit, full crowd (I think?). I'm pretty sure Zalina Vega is going to show up as well. You can't convince me Vickie is going to be in a match. You just cant. Vega is definitely showing up.

They take shots at WWE on their TV fairly regularly. TNA did as well. They signed a bunch of WWE cast offs. TNA did as well. It’s a valid comparison.

I’m not a WWE fan. I’m a wrestling fan. AEW and WWE both have good and bad aspects. My current preference of the 4 major TV products is Smackdown >> Dynamite >> NXT >> Raw

WWE’s storylines are too vanilla. Many are retreads. NXT talent usually flounders on the main roster. Too much 50/50 booking. Heels have no real heat. RAW has too much filler and should drop to 2 hours. The scripted promos usually suck. Thunderdome is a sterile environment.

AEW’s hyper defensive mark fanbase is annoying. Some of their booking is questionable. Marko Stunt getting any kind of offense on grown adult wrestlers is embarrassing. Hard to determine babyfaces and heels and/or too many face/face or heel/heel matches.

If I could offer advice to each company:

WWE: Ditch the scripted promos, give talent talking points and let them fill in the gaps. Build angles for months, not month-to-month.

AEW: Slow down. Sell high impact moves for more than 3 seconds. Every match doesn’t need 7 dives to the floor.

Name any time in the last year where they took a shot at WWE on Dynamite. The ONLY thing I can think of where they took any "shots" at WWE ever is Cody taking the sledgehammer to the throne at one of the early PPV's. That's a world different than TNA running sh!tty Voodoo Kin Mafia/invasion angles. Just not a comparison.

Didn’t Brodie Lee act like a Vince parody?

AEW idea. Seriously.

Cody can't challenge for the AEW World Championship.

Next Dark...

Midnight Rider debuts (Tony buys the song). 3 months later, 3rd match on Dynamite.

Never on screen with Cody.

Wins match to challenge....

Omega and Callis go nuts.

It tells a fun story and pays tribute to Dusty
That’s like Brian Pillman / yellow dog - right ukwildcat?

That’s such a great idea LD.

I figured if he ever did a heel turn he would say “Cody” can’t challenge for the title but never said anything about Cody Rhodes.
