CI Wrestling Thread #56

And that's why they're in AEW. They get to put on BaNgErS and TK will let them work a reckless style because it'll light up wrestling social media for a few hours. I like em both but in WWE they wouldn't be allowed to, ya know, drop each other on their heads like that. Just like WWE wouldn't allow one guy to drink another guy's blood. Indy-minded wrestling fans will love that spot though.
And in WWE they would have a 12-minute match dominated by boring ass rest holds for half of it.

It’s ok to admit you just want to watch promos and entrances. And there isn’t anything wrong with that, that’s what the WWE is built on - the soap opera of it all.

TK does PPV right. I just can't do 4 hrs of AEW. Glad Sting went out undefeated, I just don't think anyone had thoughts of dumb stunts, glass shattering everywhere, and backs soaked in blood as part of Sting's final match. Him retiring made mainstream sports news sites. Let's see if AEW can capitalize on it. They want to be niche with rankings and death matches but they have an opportunity to pull in more viewers. If I'm being honest, a lot of what I see isn't that engaging. Two weeks ago Wardlow was powerbombing another jobber. Now he's number one contender because of one, quickly put together "scramble." Where's the story of him climbing and clawing to get there? Jobber one week, title contender the next. Something in between is missing.
It’s not #1 contender. It’s more like Money in the Bank concept.

Drainmaker's other account when the first one gets suspended? We're all a little older and we've been through the ECW and Attitude Eras. We've seen it all including Juggalo jackasses in fields putting each other through tables on fire being held up by old tires. That's dumb just like it was dumb when Goldberg busted a vein smacking his forearm through glass just like Darby's stunt was dumb, esp. that close to fans. AEW fans can pretend to be hardcore and say it's us that's gone soft but the reality is I personally don't want to see that type of spot anymore. I don't think most people do. It didn't even make sense. His opponent was just standing near the glass, not even on it. Why the hell did Darby jump? The PPV was Sting, it didn't need to be remembered for a crazy bump through glass, plus Sting.

Welp, alrighty then. Darby is a tiny lunatic who believes wrestling is jumping through objects that break, crash, shatter, and bust. He usually misses his opponent because that's what lunatics do. Silly lunatics. I like watching him bleed and hope when he climbs Everest, he headbutts a rock, bleeds all over, it freezes, and he brings it back down, autographs it, and throws it into the AEW crowd. Then we'll all fight over Darby's frozen blood saucer as it melts on us because bleeding all over is neato.

One of the cooler parts of last night was Steven Borden and his brother being in the match. Tony Schiavone even mentioned that Steven had ‘a great career playing tight end at the University of Kentucky.’ I thought that was nice and generous of Tony lol.

I saw a quote the other day something along the lines of today’s wrestling fans think they are smarter but they actually know less about the wrestling business - I think it sums up dragon pretty well

I grew up on ECW and then watched my share of death matches at one point. Darby’s spot was insane, and at least he’s getting paid good money vs. the guys I’d watch in IWA who were getting paid a few bucks and a hot dog.

My issue is no one is going remember or care about that spot in a few weeks. AEW loves crazy spots, but then it’s right on to the next thing.

Disagree.

1. It’s one of the craziest spots in wrestling history.

2. It came during Sting’s retirement match.

3. The match itself was outstanding and is already being given 5 stars by media outlets.

It’s the most memorable spot in a match that nobody is going to forget. He and Sting both wanted to go absolutely balls out for that match and they did.

Funny part is during the media scrum when he, Sting and Tony were at the podium. Darby mentioned his Mt. Everest climb was at the end of March I think. Tony told him he had to face Jay White in singles in 2 weeks and Darby kinda had a look of surprise that he had to go again before Everest considering what he’d just went through.

We can re-evaluate it at a later date. I very much disagree it’s the craziest spot in wrestling history. Maybe in AEW history or recent mainstream wrestling.

I Agree with that fact about today's fans. Hell, even someone who has fancied themselves as a "journalist" like Dave doesn't know half of what he's talking about when it comes to the business. The "IWC" are nothing more than a bunch of regurgitators who don't know how to think freely or judge a match. They just follow what the internet tells them is cool. You can have someone over here putting on a great match and talking the story into you thinking it's reality, then someone over here flipping continuously for no reason on some 2nd rate NJPW house show and guess which gets 5 stars? It ain't going to be the one with a build up or ring psychology.

Reminder the new season of "Dark Side Of The Ring" premiers tonight on Vice looking at John Tenta (Earthquake.)

I can only guess this episode will be about how a good guy managed to live amongst wrestlers. Because I’ve never heard a bad word about John Tenta. When it was announced the general reaction was ‘dafuq did Earthquake do!’

Exactly. The ECW style appealed to me when I was 17. I can’t watch it today at 43. Nothing in wrestling shocks me after living through that era, and modern attempts seem like cosplay to me.

That said, Darby will have a shorter career than a non-spot monkey but it’s his career not mine.

Apparently heyman turned down being in the hof many times b/c he wanted to wait until he was retired but it’s perfectly fitting for him this year since it’s In Philadelphia.

I talk a lot of crap about Eddie Kingston no still don’t think he’s very good but I do respect him. Watching that video of him and Daniel Bryan in the lockeroom where all he wanted from his peers was respect was real and pretty damn good. May not be the best but he loves the game. Its on the aew Instagram page.

Who’s that?

He was in WWE at one point. He was wrestling guys like Cena on house shows to get him ready to be a main eventer as soon as he debuted on tv. Then he suddenly quit wrestling and decided to run for Congress in multiple states. He’s from New Jersey and he ran an ad in Texas where he had a thick accent and was talking about bucking broncos.

That sounds pretty stupid
