CI Wrestling Thread #56

Forgot all about the Biographies being back.
Also I think Sting and Darby should win.
Either we get the Tony special of a tournament or have Darby find a new partner.

Eh. He was pretty good.
Personality wise he's awful. I'm sure he's funny in his own way but in 2023/2024, that lame, Fast Times stoner gimmick is severely played out. It's like a current rock band trying to be cool bragging about doing coke off their gold records or something (Avenged Sevenfold did this when they hit it big). Cool story, broooo.

And that's why they're in AEW. They get to put on BaNgErS and TK will let them work a reckless style because it'll light up wrestling social media for a few hours. I like em both but in WWE they wouldn't be allowed to, ya know, drop each other on their heads like that. Just like WWE wouldn't allow one guy to drink another guy's blood. Indy-minded wrestling fans will love that spot though.

Speaking of unnecessary Darby doesn’t need to do these spots

Darby is future Jeff Hardy, only he'll never work in WWE. Really no sense browbeating him or pretending we're his parents from behind screens. He gets off on stupid shit that the Jackass crew wouldn't even do. If he ever gets seriously injured, so be it. Hope it never happens but what can fans do about it? Whoever is producing spots like that and blood drinking should be fired, but they won't be. Tony is either signing off on every crazy stunt or he's leaving it up to the wrestlers and producers and pretending he's a fan backstage watching it like the rest of us without a clue. He's an idiot either way. Finally, whether it was actual glass or sugar glass, that spot was dangerously close to one side of the fans and in the clip fans jumped back because pieces of glass either hit them or were scattered around their feet. The infamous Hell in the Cell match was a spectacular, legendary mess...and I don't want to see stuff like that anymore. I don't get off on rivers of blood, barbed wire, glass, and goofy shit like that. You can't take insane spots and death matches seriously when every promotion has pretty much outlawed chair shots to the skull.

The spot was to forever have semblance to the importance of Stings last match. You’d never remember it in 15 years, but you will now because of that if nothing else.

Darby is solid on any roster but crucial for AEW. Hopefully in time they get more structured because I’m too easily lost with who is on what day or why for that matter.

They have the talent just get organized and I’d follow.

Figured I’d come in here and see the reactions for revolution last night… about as I expected.

TK does PPV right. I just can't do 4 hrs of AEW. Glad Sting went out undefeated, I just don't think anyone had thoughts of dumb stunts, glass shattering everywhere, and backs soaked in blood as part of Sting's final match. Him retiring made mainstream sports news sites. Let's see if AEW can capitalize on it. They want to be niche with rankings and death matches but they have an opportunity to pull in more viewers. If I'm being honest, a lot of what I see isn't that engaging. Two weeks ago Wardlow was powerbombing another jobber. Now he's number one contender because of one, quickly put together "scramble." Where's the story of him climbing and clawing to get there? Jobber one week, title contender the next. Something in between is missing.

Cole acknowledged Sting's retirement, Pat said heck of a match last night, and Cole cut him off quick lol. If this were two years ago, 1) that wouldn't happen and 2) if it did, Vince would run out and choke Pat to death for taking it one step further and complimenting a match in another promotion.

Haha I caught that. Cole with a quickness

Don't get so mad. I was speaking from a business perspective as was NW. It is the wrestling "business" where the goal is to increase ratings, gates, and merch sales by growing your audience.

I like metal concerts. I hate country music. I won't take it personally if more people like country concerts, even if I would rather see metal. I won't take it personally if I am told a more accessible country artist has a larger audience and makes more money than a niche metal band. I also won't think I'm in an exclusive club because I like the metal band more than the country singer.

Do you believe matches outdraw storylines from a business perspective?

I enjoy both but prefer a good sensical program that blows off in a 15-minute match to 30+ minute matches and moves stacked on moves, including at least 10-20 moves nobody should be able to kick out of.
I don’t care what does better from a business perspective. I’m not making a cent off this stuff and I never will. I just care what does better for my viewing interests.

It's apparently "very likely" that Tama Tonga - who is heading to #WWE - could join The Bloodline at some point as they consider him family:

"He's on his way. Don't know the role. Very likely, at some point, could be part of the Bloodline situation because he's considered family by all those guys. So if they need somebody new, it could be him.

"A year ago, he had been talking with WWE. I don't know a start date or anything but he's done in New Japan, so in theory he should be starting pretty soon."

(Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio)
Another mid wrestler to help Roman win a match since he’s too weak to do it in his own every single time.

The crowd however is not great and its kind of depressing. I understand that AEW isn't the greatest right now but its not bad enough for the crowds to dip down like this. To me its still better than the early days when Marko Stunt and Sonny Kiss were getting air time.
I legit stopped watching AEW at some point during that first year or two because of how many average to bad wrestlers were getting featured.

I'm rooting for him honestly would love to see him get a championship opportunity and see how the Adam Cole dynamic works out.
He needs to learn how to have an entertaining match that lasts more than 2 minutes. I hope like hell his world title shot doesn’t come at a PPV.

- The Orton doc was quite good. Lots of OVW talk with some sweet standard definition footage. Never saw one of those old school OVW shows live but they used to have shows in the gym of my old elementary school after the school had closed. Riddle is just such a goof. You think his Jay and Silent Bob stoner thing is a gimmick then you listen to him. He became every California surfer kid stoner gimmick from the 90s and it's not appealing, at all.

- I know it's because of Sting but I can't wrap my head around AEW only getting like 3,000 fans or less for their weekly shows yet 16,000+ will be there tonight. Without it being about the legacy of Sting, they maybe get half that, but that's wild to me. It shows when TK wants to promote something special, he can do it. We've seen it several times.
The PPVs always sell generally well.
