CI Wrestling Thread #56

So at a house show a fan yelled "you suck!" and "don't come back!" to Maxxine and now some, including Rhea, are shaming wrestling fans for booing and saying "you suck!" to someone who I guess is just trying their best to improve. Sorry but that's so incredibly lame. The wrestling world can see Maxxine is far from ready and for whatever reason, she's on the main roster in matches instead of in NXT. It's a poor position to put her in and now some want to step up and pretend she's a child. "You suck!" to Kurt Angle and Nia Jax is okay, "Rocky sucks!" to Rock is okay, "asshole" to a heel is okay, but fans need to comfort a grown woman in the wrestling business who is making more than most fans make? Can't wait for Cornette's take on this.

Wow I’m sure people like dragon who were saying jay white should’ve picked aew over wwe should eat crow after seeing him with an roh 6 man tag belt doing the scissor gesture with that acclaimed guy - just embarrassing

I’ve thought FTR were phonies for a long time, especially Dax with his overblown “I’m old school” nonsense.

But after their performance with the worst wrestler ever, Eddie Kingston, I hope Cornette eviscerates them. I sooo want to do that art.

Can Atlantis go back to being lost? I can't believe this is the lead-in for Sting. This CMLL partnership is a dud (as was signing Jericho for like a decade).

Yes, it is WWE's fault for putting her in this position.

I'm sorry, Ric should never have seen action in the ring ever again. What quack did they find who would clear him? His "sneak attack" on the Bucks looked like it was happening in slow motion.

Likewise, Sting should never have descended from the ceiling ever again. I'm sure they were as careful as all get-out, but anything like that will always evoke memories of the tragic death of Owen to me.

Didn’t Joe to the exact same thing to MJF the dynamite before ppv? Fake an injury than attack him?

So they couldn’t have done something original? Same attack blueprint 2 title matches in a row?
I agree that doing the same thing over and over is annoying. I mean WWE had Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate wrestle Finn and Priest on Smackdown the night before wrestling them at Elimination Chamber. I just don't get why they think having the same match over and over for a month leading into a PPV will get me excited about that PPV. I have already saw this movie and just like most sequels it gets worse with each one.

We all know wrestling is scripted, but that Ric Flair spot was atrocious. The guy needs to get out of the ring for good. It’s just bad TV to pretend like he could hurt anyone on that roster.
Him and that clown Eddie Kingston move exactly the same and hit about the same.

Ya I agree to be fair I wasn’t expecting that title to change hands.

- Flair was getting involved no matter how sad it looks. TK probably gave Sting the green light to do whatever he wants in his final weeks and now that we're here, it is what it is. I still say for as much shit as Tony gets (and he deserves most of it), you can see the love and respect AEW has for Sting and having an entire PPV in his honor that's sold out to boot is pretty incredible. The evolution to Crow Sting and those rafters appearances, morphing himself into 1993 Brandon Lee, the bat and being lowered, being a silent assassin, a dark knight, a watchful protector of WCW, etc. is underrated when talking about the Monday Night Wars. What a beautiful goddamn storyline that was. Well, about 85% of it was damn near perfect.

- Cornette with a bad take. Video released of his women's EC match review...where he refused to watch it then proceeded to talk trash about some of the women, including Stratton. Dealing with Sable must've ruined blondes for him since he seems to trash every blonde wrestler, except Charlotte but that's because it's Ric's daughter.

Finn/Preist did not wrestle Dunn and whoever the night before EC, they wrestled Dom and Mcdonugh(?).

Has anyone won Money in the Bank and never bothered to cash it in? I don't see where it even fits right now.

Yes you are right. It just seems to me that one week they do a trios match, then the next week a one on one, and finally somewhere in there they will have the actual match. It's like they don't understand how to build a match by having outside interference, promos, etc. They think they have to be wrestling each other in some form or fashion every week.

2/7 - 805,000
2/14 - 811,000
2/21 - 828,000
2/28 - 822,000 (Ospreay officially All-Elitist)

Last four weeks of Dynamite ratings. For all the hype Will Ospreay gets, and it's deserved, he just doesn't equal ratings and I doubt the numbers change much with the additions of Mone and Okada. Just odd that Tony assembles a great roster and it's likely to receive a "meh" response and the best part of WWE which has received an overwhelming positive response is the talking and storytelling. The actual wrestling is secondary.

Dragon won’t like your last line, but it’s true. The drama and verbal jousting sells tickets. The match is secondary. It doesn’t need to last an hour or feature 60 high spots to be good if the fans are invested in the story. Tell a story, use psychology and have the finish either pay it off or continue the story to the next show. Simple.

I love Osprey. I would gladly watch him wrestle anytime he has a match. But, his promos need work and while an excellent performer, I don’t see him attracting many new viewers to the product. Same for Okada. I do think Mone will draw some new viewers, but am not sure how many 10K, 50K 100K??

I thought the osprey promo was decent but the match hasn’t even happened yet and for don to call it the match of the decade means the fans will end up disappointed - you just can’t do that

At this point I'm coming here every time and asking Dragon who the hell these guys are because I don't know. People think I'm nuts about wrestling. I know everything WWE and AEW for the most part and I know some of ROH, NJPW, etc to go along with all of the WCW, ECW, NWA, history.

I see some guys on AEW and I just question how deep this shit goes that someone knows jobbers from other companies. At least present Atlantis Jr as such. Don't make him wrestle Jericho for 10 minutes. That match should be over in 5.
There's this thing called Google you can use. Take less time to type "atlantis Jr" into Google and read a paragraph than it does to come on here and bitch and moan every week. If you want to be lazy and ignorant, I'm not going to reward you for it.

YOu mean Corny trashed something without actually watching it?

In other breaking news, the sky is blue.

No one watches Ospreay for promos.

Well luckily for me I base my watching patterns on what entertains me like any normal person does. Imagine basing what you like based on how many tickets it sells or how many viewers it draws, just embarrassing levels of validation seeking.

"Well I liked that episode, but only 3K people were there. So I don't know, maybe I didn't like it after all? Guess I'm going to have to wait until the ratings come out tomorrow to know for sure"

"Well the band I like didn't sell out the venue they are in and their album didn't go platinum, guess I don't like them anymore. What a shame because the music is good!"

“You’re telling me my favorite movie was a box office flop? Well **** that, straight into the trash that DVD goes!”

They put out a nice video package for him thankfully. I know you hate them explaining shit to people but we were all right. Glad Tony is adjusting the way he books and prepares fans through storytelling and video packages. When I watch wrestling it isn’t supposed to require me to redirect my attention away from the product to spend time on my phone googling shit. That isn’t how television in America works.

Yup exactly if I have to google something it’s another TK catering to his 800k followers and then he wonders why the ratings and arena crowds are stagnant.

Also I don’t follow wrestle tix or whatever either but raw Monday was sold out. Fans are there to be entertained.

It’s called sports entertainment for a reason.

Don't get so mad. I was speaking from a business perspective as was NW. It is the wrestling "business" where the goal is to increase ratings, gates, and merch sales by growing your audience.

I like metal concerts. I hate country music. I won't take it personally if more people like country concerts, even if I would rather see metal. I won't take it personally if I am told a more accessible country artist has a larger audience and makes more money than a niche metal band. I also won't think I'm in an exclusive club because I like the metal band more than the country singer.

Do you believe matches outdraw storylines from a business perspective?

I enjoy both but prefer a good sensical program that blows off in a 15-minute match to 30+ minute matches and moves stacked on moves, including at least 10-20 moves nobody should be able to kick out of.

It's apparently "very likely" that Tama Tonga - who is heading to #WWE - could join The Bloodline at some point as they consider him family:

"He's on his way. Don't know the role. Very likely, at some point, could be part of the Bloodline situation because he's considered family by all those guys. So if they need somebody new, it could be him.

"A year ago, he had been talking with WWE. I don't know a start date or anything but he's done in New Japan, so in theory he should be starting pretty soon."

I will give AEW props for this as well. It's all they need to do. Short video package, 30 seconds of background. If they plan to make one of these guys a bigger player, use vignettes or show highlight videos from their past work a few weeks before the debut. It would help the debuting talent get over. Surprise debuts work for established big stars, but not so much for relative unknowns.

Expecting everyone who watches the show to be well-versed in international wrestling wasn't a good move. I am hoping TK continues to give a brief intro to these one-off guys. I am reading Foley's first book now, and he mentioned when he was hired by the WWF they gave him a start date but started airing vignettes a month in advance to get their audience familiar with his character. That seems like the best way to avoid the "Who is this?" reaction from fans.
