Can we shoot now?

How many of our new recruits hang their hat even minimally on shooting?

Knox has been praised for improving his perimeter shot. We have that 4 star guard as well that committed recently- can't remember his name right now, whose known as a shooter.

Green is said by scouts to have a reliable 3 pt shot. Don't know about Alexander.

Diallo, before UK, was described as "streaky." So there's that.

You guys are making it sound like nothing has changed since a month ago.. like everyone is gonna be Diallo or freshman Briscoe. That's not quite right.

Knox is okay, Quade is okay, Washington is okay, Vanderbilt's shot is supposed to be much improved, and Baker will be one of the best shooters in the conference if he gets minutes.

They definitely won't be the warriors, but they might have enough to prevent teams from just piling into the middle every possession on defense.

Exactly. And with the other tools this team has, they could be really good once they get through their inevitable growing pains.

Exactly. Cal's teams do not rely on 3s like some teams do. With Bamba, we would have ridiculous size up front for blocking shots and rebounding to mitigate off-shooting nights.

This team will live off of defense and rebounding, which makes me not as concerned about it. As long as we aren't terrible it should be fine.
f we get Bamba we will have a defensive juggernaut similar to the 38-1 team. We will be long on the perimeter except for Green and can play tight perimeter defense letting the bigs protect the rim. This will be a long deep team . Imagine a five of Shai,Diallo, Knox, Richards and Bamba on the floor simultaneously. Imagine subs of Vanderbilt, Gabriel, SKJ and Washington. Foul trouble is a thing of the past unlike last year when we worried about Bam.

With Bamba

Not really, but we'll rebound too well to zone us. Also hard to zone a team who doesn't let you score and pushes in transition.

We should always have at least four guys on the floor who can rebound their position and start the break.

Funny thing
Baker is maybe the best shooter Cal has had so that was never a question but with Knox and PJ both really good shooters as well along with both guard recruits it ain't an issue. We add Johnson and we will be one of the better shooting teams in the country.
Funny thing about PJ is he has improved his three point shooting but has struggled recently from the free throw line.

Yes he did improve his peremiter shot from his junior to his senior year. It went up from 33-35% Also averaged 29 pts (knows how to score) 11 rebounds (like that as well) and 2 steals, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Also had 3 TO a game which isn't bad. Stat wise hes a little better than Aaron Harrison on % of 3's. Aaron was 33 but similiar assists, steals etc. Knox is twice the rebounder though.

It will be interesting to see how he does in the college setting. By his stats he played a lot inside and stepped out to hit the occasional 3.
Quade Green hit 38% from deep
Baker is in the 40's as well.

[laughing] Bamba not likely a solution there but he does bring a unique chaos inside and fear around the rim. Me, I'm hoping Cam accepts Cals offer. I'm optimistic he could bring that long shot needed when everyone is forced to zone.

Well he thinks hes the next Durant so it will be interesting to see him play.

Baker is considered by some the best 3 ball shooter in the entire 2017 high school class

Also difficult to zone a good passing team. Green is an elite passer, and Vanderbilt and Washington are great passers for forwards.

I think our fans are still gun shy from two years in a row where a guard was EXCEPTIONALLY bad at shooting. Briscoe his freshman year (and his Sophomore wasn't great either) and Fox was pretty off anytime he was taking mid-range shots or further. On top of that, Devin Booker had a pretty up and down season for us, and lost his shot for extended periods of time.

Aside from a game or two (Monk having a few).. the last time we really came up clutch in shooting was the 3-game Aaron Harrison run.

If having Harrison/Young, Booker, Murray, Monk etc and losing to teams like Carolina and UCONN who couldn't throw it in the ocean hasn't taught people anything, they'll never learn.

Cal isn't going to build a team that's reliant on the three. We had one two years ago and it was the second-worst squad Cal has had here, even with an incredible backcourt of Ulis/Murray.

Cal needs a guy who can get into the lane, versatile guys who can switch on defense, and a rim protector. We have that this year (especially if we add Bamba), but it remains to be seen if they can consistently do those things at a championship level as freshmen.

UNC ranked like 125th in 3 point shooting. All they needed was a few timely 3's per game and they'd be ok.

Their size made them able to grab every board and deny entry into the lane. They were able to get womanly second chance points off missed shots.

That's what UK will be next year. With everyone playing small ball, I think our size will overwhelm many teams.

UNC and Uconn were given a LOT more leeway than what's given to Kentucky. UNC had 4 straight officiating snafu's and Uconn had two guards who were allowed to do what they please on the court, while no one could look at them wrong.

I'm not saying those teams couldn't win it, or that they weren't. But I'm not sure they win the title if they had to play straight-up.

WHat we need to do, is recognize players that just can't hit, be it confidence or broken shot, and limit their shots.

We don't need the 3-pt shot to win games with our talent.. but Briscoe taking 3-pointers is going to hard any way you slice it.

Who cares? UNCheat just won a Title and couldn't shoot. But they were bigger than everyone else and could rebound those misses. Plus they had some help from the refs that we won't get.
