Cal: ulis won't return next year

Yes he is but also the reason as a fan to feel cheated to see what a player like Ulis could be on the collegiate level for his remaining 2 years. In college he is a stud, in the NBA whenever he makes that jump he will just be another player.

Money will always be there, college life and the chance of being THE star can only last for 4 short years at most. I despise the NBA for robbing all the young talent they do now.

Really? The money will always be there? Not hardly...

If you are reading this forum, I would assume you are a fan of UK. If you are a UK fan I would assume you are a fan of college basketball. If you are a fan of college basketball I would assume you know that the best of the best are culled each year to move up to professional basketball. Ulis is one of the best of the best, he will be called up to play professional basketball. He won't get better than he is now in college.
I agree with you 100%

Ya I guess that accurate

Yeah, I probably am...

His stock will be as high as it is ever going to be at the end of this season. He is likely the SEC player of the year and is getting some talk as national player of the year. Tyler is playing 97% of the minutes of every game. We have two super studs coming in next year that likely would cut into some of his time, points, spotlights, etc. The draft this year will be weak and loaded next year. Always the chance of injury. There are numerous reasons that all point to the decision that Ulis should enter the draft this year. Enjoy him this year and wish him the best!

I truly believe Ulis works his way into the first round. Yes, he's small for the NBA, but it's not like there aren't currently other success stories at that size. Been plenty of smallish guards who have succeeded in the NBA. Someone will take a flyer on him in the first round, and they won't regret it either. If he is able to put on 10-15 lbs should be enough to keep him durable for his career.

As fans, we would love to have Tyler all 4 years, but it's a new world. Nobody as talented as Ulis is stays 4 years. So quit being selfish. The money will not always be there. Cal is not pushing him out the door. He wants him to succeed. Success to a basketball player is the NBA. Why do people not want our guys to find success? He is playing for free now, he can't keep doing that forever.

And like another poster said, there was a mob of people telling us how Cal had slipped recruiting this kid, another Ryan Harrow, bla bla bla. Now they want him to stay for 4 years instead of fulfilling his dream. Sports is not like any other profession. You can't play until your 65, 70 and then retire. You have a finite amount of time you can play and cash checks.

Folks, take a look at this list for a second. Look at the players names and number of games. Look at the great guards from our past and look where a 5'9" 160 lb. sophomore is.

http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/statistics/seasonassists.html

In Tyler's next game, he will be sitting in third place IN 28 GAMES. We have 3 more regular season games and likely 3 SEC tourney games. If Tyler continues @ just over 7/gm, he will roughly catch Wall in game #34 for Tyler, the first round of the NCAA's. If we make a deep run, Tyler has every opportunity to shatter Walls record and even though it's unlikely, he could approach 300 if we get to the NC game.

One last thing that blows my mind. Look at this list.

http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/statistics/careerassists.html

If we play 9 more games, Tyler will almost certainly finish in the top 10, in 2 years. When you consider our history, that is amazing.

Couldn't have said it better. Great note to head to the Golf Course on. See ya!

Love Tyler. But it will be in his best interest to leave. I've expected that all season. His stock won't get any higher by staying another year or two, and this is a weak draft.

Please explain to me how it will not always be there? I am sure Tyler has an insurance policy for injury that would pay him 5 million dollars which is way more than a 2nd round contract would pay or even late first round. If Tyler does not make or last in the NBA he will overseas and still make a nice living for himself until he decides to do other things.

This argument of taking the money while you can has little merit...Its not going anywhere. the NBA has been around for years and will be the next year, the year after and the year after that and safe to assume will still be there long after all on this board are dead and buried. This is not the once in a lifetime chance some of you make it out to be.

You're missing the most obvious point. The earlier you are drafted, the more you make. This is the year Tyler will maximize his draft position, and that means everything.

No offense meant at all. But, I wonder if you put yourself in Tyler's position would you do as you are proposing? Be completely honest with yourself. I do not think anyone would stay given all the elements in the decision.

Sorry but the premise that "oh well if he blows a knee he prolly has an insurance policy" is not really a valid one. Even if he does have an insurance policy I doubt it is for $5 Mil. Even if it was, the idea of never being able to each your ultimate life dream of playing at the highest level of basketball in the world would be devastating and should play a huge part in the decision.

I get the fans that want him to stay. I do too. But think about what is best for him and not what is best for us. I think if you are completely honest you would agree he should go this year. We are lucky hat we have a coach who recognizes that, even if it is to his detriment as well.

Exactly. Plus, in sports...age matters. Ulis gets 2 more years of his 20s to make money playing professional b-ball.

So, sick of this model. It's produced 1 championship (who cares about final fours) and it's only championships that matter around here these days. Last year was an utter embarrassment and biggest choke jobs I can remember. Now, we will lose one of my favorite players in a long time because of Cal's arrogance from a recruiting pitch (Look! Come here and I will get you to the NBA in 1 to 2 years) standpoint and pushing him out the door. Whatever, I guess. I couldn't care less what they do in the NBA. Crap product for the past 20 years.

Who I hope does go to the NBA is Skal. Seven feet of nothing.

Loss of Value policies are based upon projected draft status and earnings. I highly doubt prior to the season Tyler's was anything above a second round amount.

Louisville is looking for more fans...

Not that Houston has the option.. but I would be ecstatic if my Rockets grabbed him with any pick after 14. Has nothing to do with him being a Wildcat (completely lying on that, I did back flips when they drafted PPat).. but Houston could really use him. Doesn't have to score, can run the offense, facilitate, play good defense, and most of all, he'd be the leader of the team after 18 days because Harden and Howard are void of anything resembling "leadership"..

Quality players become sparse in the late 1st round. I'd easily welcome Ulis after the lottery is done.

That's how I look at it now. I've made peace with the early entry thing. For us as "fans", of course it royally sucks when players leave. However, it's a different time in the sport. It's the so-called OAD era, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to literally be set for life financially. Wouldn't we all want that for ourselves? So I say best of luck to them when they go and when you're such a powerhouse like Kentucky, you know that more great recruits are on the way so it's not like an empty cupboard is gonna be there. So tip your hat to them, say thanks for choosing to play here and best of luck to you.

you deserve a starting lineup with dakotah euton, vinny zollo, and michael avery in it

what a terrible post

Come to think of it, Houston has the 38th pick, and NBADraft has Ulis going mid-40's... I'll now be putting a lot more attention into a normally use-less draft pick.

If Ulis was 3 inches taller, he'd be a top10 pick. That's all that separates him between a mid-2nd round and mid-lottery... 3 inches.

What flavor does the NBA want this month or this cycle. Not sure if you have ever been in business. I doubt it. You make what you can when you can.

This business about having an insurance policy like it's some big get out of jail free card is laughable. Yep, I bet he does have a decent insurance policy. If he doesn't that is horrible for all involved. One thing though; Insurance is the only thing you EVER buy that you hope you NEVER have to use. Think about that.

I of course can't speak for Ulis or anyone else but in life you try to make your way, not have fun in the sun and hope for a big settlement due to injury, even if it's a just in case type security.

Doing it right is not about that. Be Good (Oh, have you been overseas? It's nice to visit and some like it but I'll stick with where I'm at. Been there, done that.)

Actually he is. Probably most of the lottery would be filled with next years class That said more the reason Ulis will go this year.

W2R, I seem to heard how SKAL would be the No. 1 or No 2 NBA pick after his one year in college. Do you still think that will happen? Several years ago, I heard Tubby say, "Enjoy Morris this year, because he will only be here this year." If I remember correctly, he come out, but didn't even get drafted.
My point is, we never know how the players will turn out when they get to college.

OLD STOLL FIELD GUY!

Easy retort.

Wasn't hard.

"I'm so sick of this.
I'm embarrassed.
We lost ONE game last year and I'm mad mad mad.

We hadnt been to a FF since 1998 but that doesnt matter, we havent experienced success like this in 20 years but so what?

I'm mad."

What a sissy.

For those stating he won't go late in first round...here is a list of guys in spots 19 thru 30 on some mock drafts:
It may very well happen, but I just don't know why you'd throw away a draft pick on so many international kids who play vs. YMCA summer league competition.

- Wayne Baldwin (please...Ullis rips this kid everytime we play him)
- Melo Trimble (fine...good player with more size)
- Zimmerman UNLV (who knows....but a total project is all we now)
- Taurean Prince Baylor
- Sabonis Gonzaga...(fine with me)
- Zhou Qi (who knows)
- Isaia Cordiner (who knows)
- Juan Hernangomez (who knows)
- Petre Cornelia (who knows)
- Ivaca Zubic (who knows)
- Grayson Allen (Solid player..not sure he's all that big for a SG)
- Brice Johnson (not overly impressive at UNC in 4 years)
- Check Diallo...whatever
- Nigel Hayes Wisconsin (solid player)
- Chris Lavert Michigan (Just a spot up shooter and nothing else)
- Wayne Selden Kansas (Finally had a decent college season in 3rd year..was abysmal before this)
- Malik Newman Miss St (one trick pony of a shooter right now)

Tyler is a better basketball player than most of those guys.

That said, a case could be made for most of these - very thin case for a couple.

How many PG in this draft? How many potential guards in next year? There is only a handful this year. A team that needs a solid PG is going to draft Tyler. If Tyler is in the board in the 20-40 range they are not going to pass on him because his height. He has exceeded expectations and the highest level in CBB being at Kentucky. In all honesty he probably goes to a pretty decent team as well being he won't be in the lottery.
Someone said the other day that the Twolves are interested in Murray what if they used their second pick in Ulis Combine that with KAT and Wiggins. Oh my.

Nice try but I own my own business and have for years. I also went to college. I guess by your assertion unless it is 100% required. ie. Doctor, lawyer, etc. No one should go to college and head straight for the workforce. I mean think about it. Even if you only get a job making $9-$10/hour that's $75,000 you are sacrificing over a 4 year period not to mention the $30,000 average student loan debt that comes with it.

and I always love the blow a knee assertion as if that can only happen in college. He could blow his knee in summer league after getting drafted 2nd round and then what?

I must awesome that you do not run a business or own your own...
Relying in insurance...you've got to be kidding me.
if he loses one year or pay...just the compounding interest on that...smh

Now, we will lose one of my favorite players in a long time because of Cal's arrogance from a recruiting pitch (Look! Come here and I will get you to the NBA in 1 to 2 years) standpoint and pushing him out the door. Whatever, I guess. I couldn't care less what they do in the NBA. Crap product for the past 20 years.

Congratulations! It takes a truly staggering level of cognitive dissidence, arrogance and lack of irony to post stuff like this with a straight face. Impressive.

Dennys Cough i dont agree with that whole take but you made some good points. I am rhere with you on one point...i could care less what they do at next level...couldnt tell you half the teams they play for...All UK all the time

yes I do which leads to the next part of my quote where you have such a short time period to be THE Star of your team. Once your college life is done there is no going back. Once that contract is signed, absolutely you are set

Why don't you stop working for 2 yrs...the money will be there.

What if his dream is to play pro basketball and that is the job he wants? Your telling me he is supposed to turn down a job so he can play for you? Who says he wants those 2 more years? I loved college, but I also like making money, so after I was qualified to work, which yes in my case was finishing school I did exactly that. He apparently is qualified now. Sounds to me like your dogging him out attempting to say he can't play at the next level...can't wait for him to prove you wrong.

Tyler WILL go in the 1st round this year. Won't be in the lottery, but almost guaranteed he goes in the last 10 picks of the first round.

We are lucky hat we have a coach who recognizes that, even if it is to his detriment as well.

its hard to say what I would do but this is not a one size fits all. Everybody is their own person, not every single player in college has gone for the NBA money the first chance they had for various reasons. He will probably go and that's OK, nothing wrong with that. Will be happy for the Kid but personally does nothing for me and my family and selfishly I don't get to watch him shine at the collegiate level like he is now. The assertion I take issue with on other posters is that "he has to go". He is a sophomore and 19 or 20 years old, he does not have to do anything. As I just stated in my previous post before this one, he could easily blow out a knee in summer league following the draft and never step foot on an NBA court. There are never any guarantees in life. Players long before the NBA started drafting kids played 3-4 years of college ball and did just fine.

Also laugh at the assertion that you lose money by not going sooner. I hardly doubt anyone who plays in the NBA for 10 plus years and makes anywhere from 50-100 million dollars is worried about the income they lost by not going as soon as they could and lost out that one or two years worth of salary. Your worth in the NBA will be what it will be regardless if you end up going at age 18 or 22. If your are a one contract player and do not last in the NBA will it matter what age you went?
