Bruiser Flint hired by UK as assistant

Maybe Bruiser can help us get some of those Philly recruits that Villanova has been getting. This is all about trying to keep up with 'Nova. They are the new standard in college basketball.

Nobody seems to know who coached up Damion Lee before he distinguished himself in his senior year at Louisville by scoring 27 against the Cats.

Anything negative against Cal

You've been running around like Joaquin Phoenix defending Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master.

You taking in the announcement of Cal hiring Flint today:

Honestly, I don’t know what I was thinking. This is exactly a Cal hire. I was in denial, I really don’t care for Flint.

Cal just isn’t the type to hire egos that would ever question things. He’s a my way guy, always has been. He’s got a lifetime contract. Is what it is.

Before but not now

wrong. They were never buddies. Nobody likes Lane Kiffin. And when Saban took him he did so while Kiffin was making enemies everywhere.

Why then? Because my dear, Kiffin had been the head coach of an SEC program, had a crazy football pedigree, had a damn good offensive mind, and was labeled a hella recruiter ( pipeline to California?)That’s called an ACE ASSISTANT. Doesn’t matter the circumstance, you use him and control him. That’s what Saban does. Everything has a purpose, everything is for 1 goal.

Cal is different. That’s why Saban will seen as the GOAT in his sport and Cal won’t. To win at that level you have to care about winning above all, Cal cared enough to be great but not enough to be goat. You don’t hire Bruiser Flint to gain an edge.

Different strokes.

I’m anxiously awaiting your “ You don’t know anything you’re just negative” comeback. Hit me with it

If Kiffin is so good we will see how he does at Ole Miss.

Flint was a terrible buddy hire. Failure everywhere he's been. Should have been Antigua. Cal will never win another Championship until Coach O rejoins the staff.

Are you kidding me? That cheater? He broke a friggin rule, we want pure. We want esoteric natured disciples. We sacrifice program for honor, we would rather fail 100 times than offer so much as an extra spread of cream cheese for championships.

Thing is if you raise your chin and chest a tad bit as you say it you’ll actually start believing it too.

It's always puzzled me why Cal has little or no "coaching tree" to speak of. I think I'm starting to figure it out.

I love Cal and hope he is here for another decade or more.

But I am also a realist. He doesn't have many flaws, his resume speaks for itself, but one flaw that I think has definitely held him back is that he is stubborn. He likes to maintain a minimal level of control over things, and frankly, it's worked out...but has also been a hinderance. That control manifests in his staff.

In terms of his coaching tree, he has had some really good assistants over the years, guys like Pastner, KP, Coach O, Joel Justus (future star IMO), Slice, etc. However, something blatantly absent from that list are former players. Coaches with robust coaching trees, like Coach K, Pitino, etc have that because they prioritize hiring their former players. Coach K has had numerous 4-year players, which I think contributes to his ability to do that. Many of the players that Cal coaches end up playing professionally. They aren't interested in coaching because they are still playing...at least for now. Looking back at Cal's tenure at UK, how many 4 or even 3-year players has he had? Not many. And the overwhelming majority of them are still playing professionally on some level.

I would love for Cal to expand his tree and create some long-term Wojo/Jon Scheyer type assistants for us, but the reality is our guys get drafted at a much higher rate than Duke's. That's a blessing and a curse.

Who knows, maybe Cal wants to expand his tree. That would explain his current staff. I think Joel will be up for a different gig at some point in the near future, I would love to see Cal pursue someone like Josh Harrellson or perhaps Darius Miller when he retires from the league.

Josh Harrellson is someone I've always wanted to see back at UK in a coaching role. Recruited as an unknown 3-star JUCO, came into our program, worked his tail off and became an absolute star for us by his senior season. If that's not the ultimate shining example we want to set as a program, I don't know what is.

Yeah this hire definitely doesnt do anything for me but if Cal likes it enough to hire him immediately then there has to be something there.

Cal was a big reason why Bruiser Flint ended up at IU.

I know Cal is a loyal guy and puts it ahead of just about everything, but he’s not hiring Bruiser Flint and if he does he needs to start taking hard questions about putting his personal life ahead of his job description. Kentucky Basketball is not a personal club for coaches to see to it friends are taken care of.

Bruiser Flint is not even remotely close to the type of guy UK would need in the role of Payne. I would even be willing to bet recruiting takes a massive hit.

It’s just a bizarre situation. I’m going to assume this is media driven and “connect the dots” by the morons we call sports journalists today.
Go ahead, without looking it up, and list the names of the assistants for UVA, Villanova, UNC, etc

Amazingly, he is worse than Barbee. Cal using Kentucky basketball for charity assistant coach hires for his players/friends should be an outrage. When the Cal era is over, it will be pretty plain to see how ridiculous this has become and how if coincided with our decline in success (post 2010-15, 2015-now). It's glaring.
And someone unlike you that actually knows college basketball thinks he is a great hire.
He obviously has that gravitas attached to his name. He's got the best people skills of anybody, anywhere in college basketball," Rothstein said. "When you combine all those things with the power of Kentucky's brand, and that he's with a Hall of Famer in Calipari, he's going to make a big impact. Just with his personality and the way he is with people, that's going to happen," he said.

look, I know your deal. It’s fine. My deal isn’t to just fluff every decision everyone I like makes. I’m not a beyond reproach guy. I like Cal. Cal isn’t perfect. Neither am I. It’s all fine. But I’m not a fluffer.

Once again, stop trying to deflect. This isn't about Cal, or 20 years ago at Umass or Memphis
This is about a good hire. Someone that actually knows college basketball thinks he is a great hire.

To defend anyone who doesn't like the hire,it's the fact Cal didn't even open the job up--this is gifting a friend a job without seeing who else was interested and plenty more talented assistants would've been. Cal spends more time talking about how he doesn't shave then he did replacing Payne. And let's quit with the nonsense that Payne only was the "big man" coach--he was their top talent evaluator, top recruiter, loyal to the players, and every player who exits UK talks about him because he lived in gym when they needed him and listened to them. He helped land Cal a great class to work with as parting gift, and now it's up to Cal to put in the work because he's going to have to work a lot harder now without a heavy hitter. Justus is going to get his chance to prove himself as he's the most qualified to land elite guys. Cal brought in Slice and Slice recruited like a mid level Big East guy, now he's bringing in a similar guy and only people excited at IU fans who rid themselves of him.
Cal is loyal to guys and I respect that. He wants people around him he can completely trust and Flint fits that. No idea what his role will be or how he will do in recruiting but I do trust Cal. Want to see it play out before I pass a harsh judgement on the move.

One issue here. Saban is about winning. He doesn’t care if he likes you.

Saban couldn’t stand Lane Kiffin but he hired him to get the job done and threw him away when he was ready. It’s not close to the same thing. Sagan would never hire a friend in a top role if it was questionable.
Like you know anything at all about Saban or the inner workings of him and his staff. You speak as if you are being factual when you do not know any more than anyone else.
