Any thoughts on slowing down Vol offense

TN Oline walls up against rush and Hooker likes to launch from a spot about 8-10 yards deep-he has a rocket and throws a good deep ball

Gotta try Stunts, Twists and some delayed middle blitz to affect his preferred launch point - Middle pressure and boundary corner blitz and hit Hooker hard

Im not sure we’ve played against a quarterback with more talent or skill in a very long time. This guy is that good. He glides like a gazelle when he runs, he’s tough as nails and shows great touch on his passing. I’ve watched him improve a lot under Heupel. He’s the best quarterback I’ve seen play this year. Tennessee’s issue is similar to Kentucky. He gets hurt there’s a major dropoff in the backup. Hooker is their entire offense. They win, they lose based on his performance.

Static alignment calls will doom any defense and blitzing often an accurate QB with a plus Oline/WRs is more likely to cause a route than rushing three. White knows this, which is why he'll try to disguise what's happening. He has alignments that he knows his film shows as three rushing, so he'll send 4 this game from those alignments. Conversely, he has alignments were his film indicates 4-5 are coming and he'll rush three and drop eight. He does that because he hopes Hooker checks into a hot route, thinking and edge is coming and that's when he throws a short slant or out and that's when our OLB jumps the route for an interception. To counter, UT runs tempo, which makes it difficult for the defense to get their play calls in quickly enough and eliminates our ability to substitute and since they practice it daily, they feel the chaos is a net positive for them. They will go balls out in Q1 and White will play a lot of shell zone in order to take away the big play, in the hopes that they make some mistakes or, if they don't make mistakes, then we will force them to eat yardage 4-5 yds at a time. If the latter happens, then that is a win for us because they cannot play uptempo all game or they will be gassed by halftime and we'll roll them in the second half. If you bet, bet UT to cover the Q1 and maybe even the H1 spreads, then flip it to UK for H2 and final score. Regarding special teams, we don't suck. We are plus on the return game, but our long snapper sucks, so it the FG unit that is the problem. As an analytics guy, this bothers me less than most because I believe Stoops, in the past, has been overly conservative on going for 4th downs and our kicking woes has caused him to go on 4th more, which is a net positive given our ability to pick up short yds.
Post of the year.

Told y'all the D staff/analysts spent all summer working on schemes to contain scrambling QBs. The goals were to use them week 2 (big check, success), and this coming Sat night.

When you say this bunch of words thrown together like this it makes me think you have not seen Tennessee play this season

“ Looks like cheating” … Good Lord… please inform us how ? Just because you don’t like it does not mean it is cheating

“The hurry up offense shouldn’t be allowed at all times.” Really? So when should it be allowed ?

Could it be because you are worried that this offense is exciting ? Easy to sell to recruits ? Might kick our ass ?

Isn't cheating but it's absolutely lame gimmicks. Just like running the lame grade school extra point formation or hb pass every play.

To further what @JHB4UK said, I hope we lay on the field every snap. Lame vs lame.

Finally UK lost the ole miss game because brown was .25 seconds late getting set. Yet UT gets to run up and snap it every time. Any bets on if they get a procedure penalty sat?

They’ve had a few. Usually when Milton’s in with the team 2 WRs. Had one Saturday.

250 yard passing, 200 yards rushing should do it. Means we are converting our 3rd downs and keeping them off the field. Really need a huge day from our D line, but really really need a big day from Key, Brown and our TEs. Can’t be dropping passes.

With all due respect, the mental aspect also entails being accustomed and prepared to quickly recognize and adjust formations and coverages, etc. in response to the tempo. Tempo is an inextricable element of an overall offensive scheme.

Anyway, I think we just have different ways of looking at things, so cheers and GBB!
Yeah I've done a poor job of explaining my point. And I'll start with I have no problem with teams playing with Tempo, but there is a distinct difference between playing with tempo and gimmick hurry up IMO. Here is the difference.

Tempo is no huddle and snapping the ball early in the play clock as a routine to build momentum and play fast. Defenses at least have time to line up against this style but may not be able to adjust much with substitutions etc. That's ok and good strategy by the offense to stress the defense and keep them form adjusting and I'm perfectly fine with that.

Hurry Up is running to the line to snap it SOLELY for the purpose of trying to get a play off before the defense is sets ins nothing but gimmick.

There is no mental aspect or strategy or scheme to Hurry Up, its just all gimmick to see if you can catch the other guys not ready and steal some plays. I dont mind this when you have to do it in short time situations, but to use it as part of a routine in your offense is just what it is, a gimmick that cheapens the game.

In Tempo offense the defense at least gets a chance to set and react and have a chance. You have to keep in mind its not a completely equal set up offense vs defense when lining up. The offense knows what they are going to do, where they are going to line up and where each guy is going pre-snap, the defense always has to wait and see how the offense lines up before they can even start to have any idea how they should line up to counter it. So there is always a built in 3 or 4 second disadvantage for the defense in these situations.

Folks can argue thats part of the game and good the offense and if you dont like it stop it. I say it wasnt how the game was intended to be played because it emphasizes gimmickry over competitive conflicts the game was set up for each play. Its like getting a sucker punch in before everyone can square off. Sure you can be proud of yourself for getting the lick in but not sure it shows who the tougher better figher is. In football the defense can try to get ready for the sucker punch but because of the built in disadvantage of being able to line up property to the offense the are alwasy suck with one hand in their pocket to block the punch.

And again is this really what we want to sit home and watch every Saturday in college football, everybody scurrying to line up to get plays off before everybody else? Not me.

BTW on your point about the Air Raid, it did have some gimmickry to it but that was mainly because at the time no huddle offense was new. But it wasnt a hurry up offense it was tempo and built on using the pass as a run. Again big difference between the two IMO. Appreciate the discussion

Well, with all due respect we differ in opinion.
brother-in-law Knoxville sends me articles all the time. The quarterback coach at Tennessee, gave a speech the other day about how smart hooker is how he calls so many plays at the line after observing the defensive formation and the matchup it’s not just a matter of trying to snap before the defense is set
They still average 22 seconds before they snap the ball. Apparently hooker is just fabulous at checking or audibling … their offense is predicated on matchups. It’s just that they do it very quickly.
Another thing. I am older than dirt the older we get the more conservative we get generally. We hate change, but I guarantee you that the vast majority people under 40 absolutely love offenses like the Vols have. And if we had Kentucky running that offense , you might be converted .

OT but good athletes want to play in that offense and not ours. Hell I could go the the sheeter and read the Sunday comics before we snap the ball.

UT hasnt turned the ball over in this hurry up. Maybe Sat night v a top 14 D and top 14 pass D will be the game where they screw Smokey.

Have any of you saw a game with the hurry up offense where ALL the defensive players take plenty of time to get up and get lined up? What would happen if all of our players are not getting up quickly and running to get lined up? Would the refs wait more than they normally do?

No. They will not hold up play once ball is set unless the offense subs in.

Nick Saban will get this changed during rules changes this after this season.

His argument will be player safety and SEC rules committee will give him what he asks for which will be adequate time to sub in for defensive players before ball is set for play.

Hope you are right with Saban. I just wondered what it would look like if you had defensive players all out of whack after every play. Trying to imagine how the refs would handle something that hasn't been seen before. Need a lot of cramps and things of this sort this game.

UK playing against the hurry up O at then #14 Ole Miss and the bye week will help immensely Sat. night.
We have two (Stoops/White) very intelligent defensive minded coaches as well.

If you have watched UT games this year and last, it happens multiple times in every game and usually results in a Vol TD.

It also generates several illegal substitutions penalty for the defense with a free shot play for the offense with no fear of failure.

Even Bama was caught several times trying to get defensive play call in and didn't get defense set before TN snapped the ball.

Saban was ballistic about it after last year's game, and he won that game. Now that UT has beaten Saban with the hurry up offense, he didn't say a word about it.

That means he is working behind the scenes to get the issue resolved. And he will.

Let us see a player down after a LOT of plays. Nothing they can do about that. Noticed the ESPN computer says TN has an 83% chance of winning.

Thus the school record 20 hankies v Alabama. I have a feeling UK, after playing a hurry up O at Ole Miss and having the Bama tape and a bye week to rest and review will be much more efficient w/def. subs than Bama was at UT.

As I stated before that’s just a little ruse by a little Nikki because he does not know how to defend that offense. I can’t stand him. Little man syndrome, arrogant, talks down to everyone. Even find bomb says little Nicky surrounds himself with yesmen…. insulating himself sometimes from reality. Like the mess he stepped in regarding the Bama player who hit the UT coed—-his response is beyond disgusting if you give a damn about women. Greatest coach of all time, of course. When you get the number one recruiting class every year it’s a lot easier to coach.
His player safety bullshit is not proven at at all in re to The type of offense That Tennessee and others run

Bama was in the top five in penalties before the Tennessee game.. their penalties have been a problem all year long. They did clean it up for Mississippi State

Lol. Surely a UT fan will not disparage the discipline that Saban administered to his player for that incident with a woman.

Please Google Bru McCoy felonies and get back to us on that one.

Finebaum is correct. Nicky boy surrounds himself with yes men.

Unfortunately for other SEC teams, those yes men largely reside in Birmingham Alabama, specifically in the SEC office, so I am sure they will never let Nick have his way on this issue.

NIL and players safety are two issues that no one in their right mind would question.

Which of those do you not like???

I personally hope UK throws 75% of the time because UT is 130th in pass defense yet tied for 8th in run defense.
Hopefully UK’s gameplan is to pass and pass often.
We have a great QB with a rifle arm and several talented WR and TEs. This could be the game where Levis and our pass catchers are showcased and I believe they will be.
That’s mainly because teams are playing from behind so they have to throw the ball .

We spied Richardson quite a bit. Stopping his runs was a big part of the defensive strategy, but Florida didn't have the passing game that UT does so I'm not sure they can risk having a player spying on Hooker.
If we can play 5 in the box it will be HUGE . But Tennessee should be able to run against that if they want. That goes against what they are wanting to do though.

Bru McCoy had his charges dropped. Ramon Jefferson plead guilty to his.

For the vol fans lurking here to argue those were not some home cooking that massively aided you…. Sit back and enjoy these moments....the WWE...excluse me I meant SEC was great at choreographing this game.

I don't know why teams don't just fake a ton of injuries when they need to sub on defense. I know it's against the rules now but good luck proving that sheet.

Because said player will have to sit out the next play and the O goes after said player. U really sit one of your best players w the #1 O in cfb staring at you ?

Will UT fans be upset if a foe has a cramp and game play is stopped? It is part of the game and legal to go down when injured, right.

I remember in Richt early years he tried a little pace, guess who whined about it, complained to SEC office and official stood over ball until both teams were ready? If you guessed Fulmer and the vols, you would be correct.
Faking injuries is lame and should be legislated out of the game.

Soupbean made a valid point that I had not considered. I agree with him that the Vol's hurry-up offense is a gimmick. There is a difference from the no-huddle. Reminds me of the 4-corner offense used by Dean Smith. It was a stall tactic when UNC had the lead. Totally within the rules but not in the spirit of the game. So, NCAA adopted the shot-clock.
Would not be surprised to see a rule change regarding this.

Goodness. How in the world was that first clip not targeting? It seemed textbook. Geez. Now the pass interference was pretty ticky tack. Technically probably was PI but could be called every play if that's the standard used. I've seen way worse let go.
