At a powerhouse program like Kentucky, Pope has significant resources at his disposal—especially in the NIL department. That funding is being put to good use this portal season, as it’s widely believed that Kentucky leads the nation in NIL support—and by a wide margin.
Makes me LOL anytime they guess about a schools NIL money . I thought Duky had the 35M in dark money?

If that time line is correct and he 100% trust it, then that is good news for that young man and BBN.

Freaking fantastic!!! Still, no need to rush it. We're good.

“My understanding is that barring something surprising, he’ll be cleared to return to the court mid-late August, and be ready for 5-on-5 in September,”
Agreed, I’d prefer he take it easy, practice with extended rest and wait until around December to really ramp it up. I know they can get guys pretty well fast, but taking the proper time and rest will benefit us more to make sure his knee is ready to go. It will take time getting confidence to play like he used to as well.

Nobody know but it is good news that everyone seems to think Kentucky has plenty of NIL and no matter what the actual numbers are that’s all that matters, competing at the top.

Agree. We need him in March/April not November.

I hope Pope works him in slowly. We could survive without him in November and December. Then bring him along slowly in January. Maybe 10-15 minutes a game. Then ramp him up to 20+ minutes in February and March. Keep him fresh and give Moreno plenty of minutes to develop.
Yep. The more min for Moreno, the better. Bringing Q back slowly is a March win/win.

I don't consider a soundbite from Aaron Torres to be an actual medical update. Dude's a blowhard who knows less about UK basketball than most of the posters on this board. If there was a real update from legitimate sources, every UK basketball reporter would be reporting it.

Sorry, until he plays the full season this year, pundits at ESPN can't include him as any sort of factor in their preseason power rankings. Thems the rules.

Very good news for UK. Pope and the trainers will make sure to bring him along slowly. Pope and the staff/trainers care for the players.

Kyrie Irving had the same injury at about the same time. His expected date to return is sometime in January. I am not saying JQ can't do it but, why the months difference in return times. I have never heard of a 6 month recovery, then, full return for this type of injury. I hope this is the exception.

Speak for yourself I actually like Aaron Torres. You coming off like a hater.

Great news if true. I can't wait to see him on the court, he's going to be a real problem for every team the cats play.

Kyrie used a surgeon that also believes the earth is flat.

I don't hate him but I don't get the love affair for him either. Any time I've listened to him he's never offered anything compelling or any kind of info that a thousand other YouTubers aren't saying. Honestly any of us could do what he does if we had the name behind us.

Irving is about 15 years older and has much more wear and tear on his body

Me neither. UK won't rush him. He might be "cleared", but I wouldn't expect him to actually play until the SEC rolls around.

The day he’s ready I want him on the court. There would be no reason to keep him out if he’s cleared. And the “we re good mentality”. It’s important to get out the gate fast. The first goal has to be a 1 seed. Something we haven’t achieved since 2015.

If he’s cleared in sept and held out until SEC play that’s lunacy. With all the focus on JQs dad being adamant his son will be ready by September baring a setback, he will be playing in games in November. I read it was a partial tear. He didn’t have a blowout of the knee a partial tear. The more this has played out it’s seems to me expected he will be on the court for most if not all the start of the season. This guy needs the stage. He could be a top 5 pick if he plays to his potential and there are marquee matchups prior to sec that I’m sure he wants to play in.

Agreed. And the longer you wait to play him, the higher the chance that it messes with the team chemistry and the less time he has to get back in playing rhythm. If the docs say he's good, let him play. I honestly believe he wants to.

One question though. How does someone like Arron Torres get a persons personal medical information and nobody else has reported it?
I thought you could never get any medical information without the patient allowing it to be released.

Probably getting a ton of clicks!

Beyond the obvious of Irving being far older in basketball terms that JQ, there's this extensive injury history:
  • 2015 Injury:
In 2015, Irving fractured his patella during the NBA Finals and underwent surgery to repair it. Screws and a tension wire were inserted to stabilize the fracture.

  • 2018 Initial Surgery:
In March 2018, Irving had a procedure to remove the tension wire, which had been causing irritation. During this procedure, a bacterial infection was discovered at the site of the remaining screws.

  • Second Surgery:
The second surgery, performed in April 2018, involved removing the infected screws and addressing the infection. The Celtics announced that the kneecap was structurally sound and healed, but the tension wire had been causing pressure.

SINCE 2018, he's gone on the IL for the following: Hip strains, sore quads, sore knee, sore back, hamstring, groin, ankle, calf, foot...I don't know if you are counting, but that's just about everything that can go wrong in a leg.

Trevon Brazile is a better comp for a worst-case scenario, if that's your thing.

Careful...You're going to get a handful of guys with one or two examples in the history of sports (not always basketball) where it happened. Or, even better, their son or brother or uncle came back in a couple weeks.

It doesn't matter what kind of tear it is, the only surgery is a full replacement.

He just made a comment in what is essentially a blog post. No source, nada. Not even "I talked to his dad who said the doctor said"...So yeah, just a blowhard looking to pump BBN for clicks. Tada. It worked.

I'm an advocate of getting him minutes in November. Maybe not extended minutes, but as a big, it's critical that he gets experience in the trenches against the insane OOC schedule we have. If he's asked to run the offense at all, he's going to need November to learn as much as possible before conference play.

It's a catch-22, honestly. Rest him and make sure there's no doubt he's healthy, but he maybe doesn't get to really learn the team and system for a while... OR play him early so he can reach more or his potential by March, but that risks reinjury.

I suspect Pope will get JQ some extended run against the weaker OOC opps in November but maybe pull his minutes back against Michigan State, St. John's, and other physical teams that make it a point to bust other teams' tails.
