“Don’t leave Kentucky or they will all hate you”

It’s their life. Period. They don’t play to make you happy
It is their life, true. And it isn't Russia in the 70s, they don't have to play. But if you do decide to play, especially at the highest levels, then they do need to make fans happy. Because that's who provides the money, and are also necessary for the fame. No fans, no one cares. It's just a church league at that point.

Everybody’s favorite politician, Matt Jones, just said on his show that Khalil Whitney came on EJ Montgomery’s Instagram live and made this comment. What do you make of it?

I think it means EJ is 100% gone and also speaks volumes of how awful and negative social media is.
Khalil Whitney doesn't need to share ONE word of his wisdom with any of us. Plain and simple, he let his teammates down in the middle of a season. If life in a Kentucky jersey was so unbearable, he should have the stones to leave and move on without further commentary. He's essentially right--leave and you will not endear yourself to anyone at any time. Leave in the midst of a campaign and it is worse and should be. Anyone leaving in the middle of a season has some soul searching to do--you do not do that to your teammates. A big "Red Flag."

This speaks volumes about these kids' lack of maturity, their coddling, and how they have a bit of a warped sense about the real world. Ironically, we're trying to get them ready for a grown man's game in a grown man's world. Round peg, square hole?

I don't think anyone hates Khalil Whitney. Everyone thought he should stay, learn some basketball skills to go along with his athleticism, and take his turn. The problem with these kids is that they believe they are either failures, or Cal didn't utilize them properly, if they can't leave straight to the NBA, after one year. It is inconceivable to them, and their parents, that they just weren't ready to go, and that their HS games just didn't equate to college, and they needed time to adjust/learn. They want instant gratification, and they had been told throughout HS and AAU that being ranked in the top 15 in HS meant they would be driving Lamborghinis within a year. They are unwilling to wait. If that means UK fans hate them, then they are as clueless about that, as they are their draft status.

Ehh.. IDK. I don't "hate" any college basketball player. But now the Whitney decision has marinated, I'm not a fan.. at all. We could have used his scholarship. Maybe someone else didn't want to come here because of Whitney already being ahead.

He boned us, big time. And he couldn't even just do ONE single season at Kentucky. And who KNOWS what was going on behind the scenes that we don't know about. If a player leaves mid-year, there had to be some sort of chemistry problems with other teammates.

Honestly, I'm excited to never hear from him again. I want his decision to be a lesson for future recruits. In some ways, it's beneficial for us if this blows up in his face.

Screw Whitney. I hope Cal cuts all ties with him. Dude will be erased from ever having a single Kentucky tie.

..and no, it's not cause he didn't win a title, or left a year early.. HE. QUIT. ON. HIS. TEAMMATES. He committed the worst team sport crime you can.

Seriously, Whitney could really mess with decisions and recruiting, hopefully our school handles this.

Update: Our fans should go to twitter (if they use it, I don't) to show EJ love and that it's his decision to make.

I think some of us need to get outside of our UK fandom abit. If you hate a kid because he left mid season you need to get a real life and stop living vicariously through a basketball team. I love the Cats and will always be a fan. I didnt want Khalil to leave and I predicted he would be our best freshman- shows what I know. However, we dont know what these guys are going through and the pressure they feel. Kentucky is not the right fit for every kid. In his situation he had a Dad living in one part of the country and a Mom in another (Chicago I think) This is a good kid who waited to announce so that other kids in his poverty ridden neighborhood could have hope that they could make it out. I dont agree with him quitting but I also , nor does anyone outside of the program know what he was going through.

I wish the kid well and I hope he does on and has a great pro career. He has a ton of work to do on his game- like becoming a good ball handler for one , and shooting as well- but I wish him well. WE ARE FANS - These kids are not, they are just trying to get in a better position in life and UK is what they think is the best route. If you think differently then you really dont understand college sports or how these kids think. They dont think like you or I and the didnt grow up shooting free throws like Kyle Macy, or pretending to be Kenny Walker while dunking on a low goal...

These are 18 and 19 year olds that look at Twitter, Instagram and Facebook as the gospel right now. That is a sad reality to me. From the statistics I have seen, they project that approximately 10% of Twitter is actually REAL people, with the rest being bots. So, basing your opinion on 90% of "fake news" is a poor arbiter of what people actually think.

Having said that, if you are an adult and you are bad mouthing these young guys on social media in such a way that is abusive or nonconstructive in general, that is the type of perception that sullies the reputation of the University of Kentucky, it's fans and the general view of Kentucky basketball. I encourage you to type out your anger in an email to yourself and ventilate to the max in that way and then, hit delete. Expressing a constructive criticism of a person's choice is valuable and can be instructive without all of the vitriol and demeaning of one's personal character. jmo

I don’t hate Whitney - kid was proven to be a And1 tape player at best. Simply put he was a fraud 5 star and instead of staying and working he cut and run to hide his flaws

another thing to think about Cal is a tremendous salesman. He woos the Parents when he gets in their living room. Hes a wonderful marketer of our program which I am thankful for. These kids get caught up in that, then get to "real life Cal" where he is in their face screaming at them , cussing at them pushing them to be better, and they dont know how to handle it. I know 100% confirmed we almost had a kid quit last year mid season and came back this year, stuck it out and had a phenomenal year. Had Khalil stayed he may have done the same thing, but we dont know the reasons why he left.

No ... it says how awful our fan base is. Hell, half our fan base hates you while you’re here.

LOL that made me laugh - we can be a difficult bunch! But none near as good as us or loyal as us in the college game

It shows that Whitney is a baby, quitter, snitch and not happy; and wants EJ to be in his misery also.
He wants justification and misery loves company

hmmmmmm, that describes many of our posters.

EJ has been here two years and has been a good teammate, Whitney quit in the middle of the season. There is a big dfference in how they will be remembered, EJ will be and Whitney won't be.

If EJ leaves...we won't hate him one bit. Played here 2 years and chose us over Duke.

Whitney not only quit midseason...he pulled out of school. He did that with no draft stock or pro potential. He cost himself a chance to play next year as he will be sitting out and may not be academically eligible? He was getting play time and even started. Had every chance to be the man...he wasn't ready. He wanted to take all the shots and be the centerpiece, he was hardly a role player.

Exactly. Whitney is a POS that's trying to hurt us even more. He's like the guy that pulls out in front of you in traffic, and then doubles down on his jacka$$ery by flipping you off when you honk.

There is criticism to be had on all sides here. Anyone bad mouthing current or former players on twitter or posting ugly things on their accounts has serious issues. That said I will bet that 90% of those that do are also under the age of 30. Never message these players, never post crap on their accounts or anything similar. Live by that rule and you won't be causing problems.

If a recruit comes on one of these message boards then that's a different story because this site is primarily for the fans. Still even thing posting hate filled statements about them is idiotic.

With that said Whitney and several others have opened the door for this themselves. They have openly engaged fans trying to get more likes and mentions, and whether they know it or not they will get the bad with the good. Don't go on social media at all unless you are prepared for what is out there.

Also quitting mid season will always get this level of criticism. Always did. It's just before it wasn't on social media but you still got it. I believe EJ is making a big mistake. Still he stuck it out through 2 season. That deserves more respect than someone that didn't make it 2 months. Not hating on Whitney but it is what it is.

Honestly I don't think this is the last we will hear from Whitney. He's bitter, vindictive and on a mission. The best thing that could happen is for UK players to block him on all social media.

F Whitney! In his case, he's exactly right. Quit like a little bitch in the middle of the season on your teammates and you are not going to be liked or respected. However, that's the way it is in most sports and at most schools. Dude looked like Tarzan played like Jane. He got every chance early and played solid minutes, probably cost us a game or two. How can you be out there for 20+ minutes at that size and not grab 1 rebound? He figured out how to. The kid was hyped by building his brand on social media, the Dragon. He had a more than fair shot, it was painful to watch and it got tough and he bolted. That for me is the absolute worse. Anyone taking advice from him should have their head checked.

"also speaks volumes of how awful and negative social media is."
Pot meet kettle.

Our social media presence is incredibly toxic. We drove one of Cal's daughters off of Twitter as well.

Well, I certainly don't "hate" the young man, but by the same token I don't like him either. Quitting mid season won't endear you to many people; the fact he doesn't understand this shows his immaturity.

He needs to understand that, as of this minute, he's an athlete, nothing more. He's a terrible basketball player and he should be in the gym working on EVERYTHING: ball handling, shooting, rebounding, blocking out.....everything, because he isn't a basketball player at this point in time.

Honestly, I fail to understand just what Cal thought the young man could contribute to the team, as he did nothing well, nothing.

In any event, it's sad that fans would get on social media and talk crap about these guys; let it go, he did, he let UK, it's fans, his teammates and coaches go, so we should just let him go and be done with it. Don't hate on the kid, it serves no one and makes the entire fan base look bad in the process.
