Three Wildcats Advance to Olympic Finals on Wednesday

Alexis Holmes, Tapiwanashe Makarawu, and Daniel Roberts all qualified to their first career Olympic finals

PARIS – Six UKTF athletes advanced to their next respective round on Wednesday at the Olympic Games, including a trio of Cats who booked their spot into a first career Olympic final. Alumni Daniel Roberts and Alexis Holmes moved into the finals of the 110m hurdles and 400m, respectively, while incoming Wildcat Tapiwanashe Makarawu qualified for the final of the 200m. Kentucky’s trio of short hurdlers, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, Masai Russell, and Devynne Chalton (Volunteer Assistant Coach/Purdue Alum) moved into the semifinals of the 100m hurdles.

In true Hurdle U fashion, three Wildcats began the day by advancing to the semifinals of the 100m hurdles. Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, the Tokyo 2020 gold medalist, was the top qualifier out of the event’s first round, winning her heat with a time of 12.42 seconds. The Olympic record holder, who represents Puerto Rico, led her section from start to finish, cruising to an automatic qualification position.

Masai Russell finished third in the preliminaries with a time of 12.53 seconds, winning her heat in a photo finish. Holder of the world’s fastest time in the 100m hurdles this season, the American surged down the stretch to take the section win, and an automatic qualification to Friday’s semifinal, with a lean at the line.

Devynne Charlton (Volunteer Assistant Coach/Purdue Alum) was the third and final Wildcat to compete and advance to the semifinals, posting the ninth fastest time of the morning at 12.71 seconds. The Bahamian, who holds the world record in the 60m hurdles, finished second in her heat to automatically advance. The 100m hurdles semifinals will be contested on Friday, August 9 at 6:05 a.m. ET.

In the evening session, Daniel Roberts opened the action by advancing to his first career Olympic final in the 110m hurdles. His time of 13.10 was the third fastest among all semifinalists, setting him up for a chance at gold in Thursday’s final. The 2019 Kentucky graduate finished second in his heat, earning him an automatic qualification to the medal race. Roberts will take to the line for the final time in Paris on Thursday, August 8 at 3:45 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, as the 2023 World bronze medalist will go for his first piece of Olympic hardware.

A second Wildcat joined Roberts in the ranks of Olympic finalist, as Tapiwanashe Makarawu, an incoming transfer from New Mexico Junior College, qualified to Thursday’s final on time, placing seventh overall with a time of 20.16. Third in his semifinal heat, the Zimbabwean national record holder advanced as the first of two non-automatic qualifiers. Makarawu is the 2024 African Championships silver medalist and will race for Olympic gold on Thursday, August 8 at 2:30 p.m. ET.

Alexis Holmes ended the night as the third Wildcat to punch her ticket to a first career Olympic final, taking a “big Q” out of her 400m semifinal heat to earn the right to run for an Olympic medal on Friday. Seventh overall across the three heats, Holmes moved from fifth to second in her section during the final 100 meters, using the impressive kick to automatically advance. The American will contest the final on Friday, August 9 at 2:00 p.m. ET.

In addition to Roberts and Makarawu, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone will also return to the track on Thursday, contesting the final of the 400m hurdles at 3:25 p.m. ET. The defending gold medalist will look to repeat her winning performance from Tokyo. All three athletes’ races can be seen on NBC and Peacock.

Group of 5 pretty much becoming a farm system for P4 (formerly P5) schools

In the WSJ this morning, read an article re the growing trend of transfers from lower level schools to higher level schools.

WSJ looked at the 2023 all conference teams of the Group of 5 and found the following:

After eliminating those who graduated or departed for the NFL, a whopping 40% of the remaining players with all conference honors switched to another program. The vast majority of them bolted to a team in the Power Four (the Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Big Ten and Southeastern conferences).

Article went on to quote Jimbo Fisher: “Some of those leagues,” former Texas A& M coach Jimbo Fisher said in a radio interview earlier this year, “they’re becoming glorified junior colleges.”

With unlimited transfers and NIL landscape, did anyone doubt this was going to happen?

For last 8 NCAAT (2015-24) Exactly ONE RSCI Top 5 Recruit Made A Final 4; ZERO Won A Title

**I wanted Dybantsa but I just don't think that is the key to title success**

Of the 40 RSCI Top 5 guys 2015 forward, Only Duke's Banchero (RSCI #3 in 2021) made a Final 4 in 2022.

2018 Duke signed the #1, #2, and #4 RSCI recruits and lost in the elite 8. Nearly lost in the round of 32 and also the Sweet 16.

2022 Duke had the #1, #2, and #4 guys (again) and lost in the Round of 32.

Heck, in 2023, UK signed 3 of the top 6 recruits and did not win a single post-season game.

Recruiting elite high school talent is not nearly as important as it use to be.

Big Blue Boo 4 Set for October 20, UK Softball Releases Fall Games

Wildcats to play Tennessee on Oct. 20 for 2024 Big Blue Boo at John Cropp Stadium

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Softball team announced Friday that the 2024 edition of the annual Big Blue Boo will be held on Sunday, October 20 at John Cropp Stadium as Kentucky will take on Tennessee at 5 p.m. ET.

Similar to past editions of The Big Blue Boo, admission will be free for all patrons with gates opening for the games and festivities portion of the event 90 minutes before first pitch at 3:30 p.m. ET. Kentucky Softball season ticket holders and members of the Designated Players Club will receive special early entry at 3 p.m. ET prior to gates opening to the general public. The game between UK and Tennessee will be the second part of a home-and-home with the Lady Vols in the fall, as the two teams do not meet in the 2025 regular season this year due to the updated Southeastern Conference schedule rotation. Kentucky will pay visit to Rocky Top on Saturday, October 5 for a 6 p.m. ET first pitch against the Lady Vols.

Big Blue Boo 4 will be televised on SEC Network+ and the ESPN app for fans not in the Lexington area, as the annual event continues to be one of the only fall games in the country broadcasted on linear or digital television. UK and Tennessee met in the original Big Blue Boo, during the 2021 fall season.

Kentucky also released the remainder of its fall exhibition season schedule Friday afternoon, with the season kicking off at Eastern Kentucky on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. ET in Richmond. UK will again play local schools Georgetown College (Sept. 27), Morehead State (Sept. 28) and Lake Land College (Sept. 29) in the fall in addition to the Battle of the Bluegrass with Louisville on Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. ET.

All games at John Cropp Stadium in the fall season are free admission and seating is first-come, first-served with gates opening an hour prior to scheduled first pitch. Other than the Big Blue Boo 4 on Oct. 20, concessions will not be operational, so fans may bring in their own food and non-alcoholic beverages to the stadium for consumption.

Is it odd to anyone that the bottom teams in the SEC for the past few years seem to get unfavorable scheduling?

NCAA

In today’s landscape, why would any of the universities need the NCAA anymore??? Carolina was caught having players not attend class for 20 years with no penalty. The courts have said the NCAA can’t restrict NIL in any way whatsoever. They can’t enforce any monetary penalties. What function would they serve then?? Handing out penalties from when you couldn’t pay players. I for one would be ecstatic to watch it dissolve. I hope it goes defunct and Emmett and all his conspirators loose their pensions for what they have allowed the college game to become. I’m trying to enjoy these next 3-4 years because I believe it will die like baseball with the greed just turning people in other directions.
