KENTUCKY MEN’S BASKETBALL POSTGAME NOTES
RUPP ARENA AT CENTRAL BANK CENTER | LEXINGTON, KY
DEC 11, 2024
ATTENDANCE: 19,646

Final Score: No. 5 Kentucky 78, Colgate 67

Team Records and Series Notes

  • Kentucky is 9-1 and Colgate is 2-9.
  • This is the first meeting between the two schools.
  • Mark Pope is 196-109 as head coach including 9-1 at Kentucky.
  • Next for Kentucky: Kentucky takes on the rival Louisville Cardinals, Saturday, Dec. 14 at Rupp Arena. The action will tip at 5:15 p.m. and air on ESPN.

Team Notes

  • Five Wildcats scored in double figures tonight. It’s the sixth time in 10 games that at least five Cats have hit double digits in scoring.
  • Kentucky won the rebounding tonight, 46-35. UK has won or tied the rebounding in all but one game this season.
  • Kentucky used its size to win points in the paint, 40-24.
  • Kentucky sent Colgate to the free-throw line for three attempts, fewest for a Wildcat opponent since North Florida shot only two on Nov. 26, 2021.
  • Kentucky had a season-low six turnovers.

Player Notes

  • Andrew Carr totaled 11 points and 10 rebounds, his second double-double of the season and 13th of his career.
  • Koby Brea tallied 17 points tonight, including 5 of 8 on 3-pointers.
    • He surpassed the 1,000-point mark in career scoring and now has 1,013 points as a collegian.
  • Otega Oweh scored 15 points and has hit double figures in every game this season. He also led the Wildcats in assists with four.
  • Amari Williams had a season-high 15 points.
  • Jaxon Robinson ended with 11 points, his fourth straight game in double figures.

In the First Half

  • Kentucky’s starters were Koby Brea, Jaxson Robinson, Otega Oweh, Andrew Carr and Amari Williams. It is the first time this combination has been used.
  • Brandon Garrison was the first substitution at 16:42.
  • Kentucky scored the first 17 points of the game, the Wildcats’ largest run since a 17-0 spurt in the 2023-24 season opener vs. New Mexico State.
  • The Wildcats went cold for almost six minutes as Colgate responded with an 11-0 run.
  • The Raiders stayed hot and closed within 38-36 at halftime on a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Brea led UK in the first half with 12 points, coming on 4-of-4 on 3-pointers.

In the Second Half

  • Kentucky began the second half with the starters.
  • Colgate kept it going and took its first lead, 41-40, on a 3-pointer at the 18:28 mark.
  • Colgate increased the lead to three points, 45-42.
  • Trailing 47-46, UK regained the lead with a quartet of 3-pointers – two by Robinson, one by Trent Noah and one by Oweh to make it 58-47.
  • The Wildcats never trailed again, stretching the lead to as many as 18 points at 69-51.

I Love this Sumrall Quote . . . .

“I don’t know, if some newspaper tripled your salary, you might go. I don’t know, I’m very happy. Other than losing the last two games, I’m pissed about that. Everybody probably wants me to leave because we lost twice. I don’t know, my kids are mad at me.”

I’ve seen him speak a few times.

Maybe he’ll not have the career I think he is capable of, but meet the guy, talk to him, listen to him, and you’ll walk away knowing that “this guy has ‘It,’ whatever ‘It’ is!!”

*** Official CatsIllustrated Kentucky vs Colgate OOC Prediction Contest ***

Welcome to the Official Kentucky vs Colgate OOC Prediction Contest!

Follow the rules below and make your prediction. I'll publish the results after the game. You can put any comment you would like below your score prediction (put '***' after your prediction to make it easier to separate the comments) but try not to put anything above as my scripts may not be able to find your prediction. This is the 1st of three prediction contests this season: the OOC Contest, the SEC Regular Season contest, and the Postseason Contest.

Whoever predicts the score closest to the actual score wins. I take the absolute value of the difference of your guess of the Kentucky score and the actual plus the absolute value of the difference of your guess of the opponent score and the actual. There is a penalty for picking the wrong winner. That penalty is the worst score among those who predicted the correct winner. In case of a tie, the tiebreaker is used. In case of a tie in the tiebreaker, we have more than one winner.

I will be awarding points for the first 10 places, including a 3 point bonus for a perfect prediction. I will track cumulative point totals and the number of games you make the top 10. This contest ends with the Brown game.

Your post should look something really close to the example below. Remember the ":"s and the word "Tiebreaker:"! Do not!! use a "-" as a separator because some of our tiebreakers will be negative.

This game's tiebreaker is Kentucky Made 3 Ptrs.

Kentucky vs Colgate game:

-------------------------
Kentucky: 106
Colgate: 70

Tiebreaker: 12
--------------------------

Just cut and paste everything between the lines above into your reply and then modify the scores and tiebreaker as you see fit. If you don't know how to do that, type very carefully. Remember to type in the word "Tiebreaker:" so that I can find it. Anything my scripts can't figure out will not count.

Don't edit your post or try to post a score after the game has started.

I have compiled a list of 20 Christmas movies, all vying for the title of Best Christmas Movie ever. These are Christmas-themed, full-length theatrical releases. Sorry, no Die Hard.

The movies are seeded based on four factors: Rotten Tomatoes critics score, Rotten Tomatoes audience score, Box Office money earned, and Longevity.

Today is the first round, AKA, The Play-in Games. Choose one movie from each matchup, i.e. four choices over all

“We Smelled Blood”

Otega Oweh, speaking on the teams mindset going into overtime.

It’s been a while since we’ve had some killers on a team. Let alone, what seems like, a whole roster of them. Oweh said it, but they all seemed to feel the same way.

I can’t tell you awesome it feels having a group of guys that feel confident in close games like this. Haven’t had that in a while. And I bet it pays off in March.

Analysis: Well, this will be Kentucky’s final below 200-rated opponent of the 2024-25 season. The Cats are riding high, coming off a huge, come-from-behind win over Gonzaga in Seattle. Meanwhile, Colgate is coming off 4 straight losses, and 8 losses in their last 9, and sporting a 2-8 overall record on the season. They haven’t been very competitive for most of those losses, though part of their problem is that they’ve been missing grad student and starting center Jeff Woodward who is 6-11 270lb and was the leading rebounder on the team, since their 4th game of the season. He is still their rebounding leader by average.

Looking at Colgate’s personnel, they’re led by a pair of guards, #1 Brady Cummins who is a 6-6 190lb Junior averaging 11.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 37.8% from 3pt range, who is really playing the small forward, and #5 Nicolas Louis-Jacques, a 6-4 195 Senior averaging 10.9 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and averaging 37.3% from 3. The guy playing the 4 spot is another guard- #25 Parker Jones, 6-6 190lb Sophomore averaging 9.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.3 steals, and shooting 33.3% from 3, which is trouble for Colgate. The point guard is #3 Jalen Cox, a 6-3 165lb Sophomore averaging 8.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.7 steals, and only shooting 11.8% from 3. The guy who has replaced Woodward at center is forward #33 Sam Wright, a 6-9 240lb Sophomore averaging 7.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and shooting 33.3% from 3.

From the bench, the top scorer is another guard, #10 Chandler Baker, a 6-5 185lb Senior averaging 7.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, 33.3% 3fg. He’s in the game to shoot threes primarily. He has shot 48 threes on the season out of only 72 total shots, so 2/3 of his shots come from long range. From there, they just don’t have much scoring. It’s #13 Guard Kyle Carlesimo averaging 3.0 points and #2 Guard Blake Forrest averaging 2.9 points and shooting only 26.3% from 3. As for any size off the bench, it’s #9 F/C Cameron Brennan, a 7-0 230 Freshman averaging 1.9 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.

Colgate will struggle against UK, with or without Lamont Butler and Kerr Kriisa. I know we’re all hoping Butler will be back for this game, but this game will be a likely dominant win either way. Since their starting center went out, Colgate lost by 22 at Appalachian St on a neutral site and 27 to Cornell at home. Their best opponent on the season was NC State, before they lost Woodward, they still lost 49-72. Halametrics predicts UK 95-Colgate 61, Bart Torvik says UK 92-60, Dratings predicts UK 91-67, KenPom predicts UK 89-62, and EvanMiya says UK 87-60. The Line: Kentucky -30.5; Over/Under: 157.5. I think UK hits 100 again and covers the spread.

My Prediction: Kentucky 103 Colgate 68
