Summerall could very well stay put. He’s in a position to dominate his G5 group and be in the playoff picture for the foreseeable future.
They’ll undoubtedly bump his pay and most likely make some more money/resources available to football.
He doesn’t have to jump to a middling P4 gig where the road will be tougher. Especially now that playoffs are expanded.
In the era of playoffs, portal, nil, TV money being what it is even at the G5 level, coaches don’t have to leave good situations prematurely to “climb the ladder”
A G5 gig like Tulane, Boise St, etc is probably better than trying to rebuild or take the next step at a middle-lower tier P4. Sure the money in terms of salary is nicer, but the level of difficulty of the job is exponentially greater.
Nowadays it makes more sense for Summerall and other coaches in similar situations to stay put until upper middle class to top tier jobs come calling.
