Wolford Replacement?

There is a discussion on the 247 board that lists other possibilities. I won’t cut and past others’ comments, but would be interested to hear what posters here think.

Out of that discussion over there, Zak Kromer would make sense. I think Coen will have influence on this pick.

Toughest part of this deal to me is that UK will be recruiting against two former assistants with relationships in the three states that has ramped up the recent recruiting success.

Kromer seems a little young at coaching to be the type of BBW coach that Stoops seems to like. Is he ready for the job?

Anyone in Iowa or anywhere that shucks corn does it for the betterment of a hillbilly like you so you can eat and make your moonshine. Learn to stay classy like the others on this board and stop being a DB.
C'mon man. That was my attempt at adding humor to the post and you had to go there.

Calling a Kentuckian a hillbilly is as classless and stereotypical as you can get and you are calling me a DB??

OK. Sorry I triggered you. Have a nice day.

P.S. I've never drank a drop of moonshine in my life? You ever shucked any corn?

Anybody remember a former UK C named Matt McCutcheon? Was a QC at FSU at least part of the time Stoops was there, has coaching experience at the college level all be it at the FCS level. Currently at Furman as their OL coach after several years at ETSU as OL coach under former UK asst Randy Sanders. Not recommending him nor am I dismissing him, just mentioning him as an ex-UK guy.

I think Coen would know that. I would think he would be fine, between OU as grad assistant and Rams, he has 8 or 9 years experience. I think there are a couple of drawbacks to it. 1. He is just getting started in his career, likely would be looking to move up. 2. These guys with Coen ties likely leave when he does. The second one isn't a sure thing, Scott and Schlarman didn't follow NB when he left for Troy.

You may be right, Stoops might not be comfortable with someone that young. This particular guy, Stoops knows several people that he trusts that would have good intel about him, his brother, Kromer's dad, and Coen.

Coen will know, but I think I would prefer someone who played the position and has taught it to college students. Kromer may be accustomed to working with NFLers, rather than teaching the fundamentals. But, Coen and Stoops would know.

Never had to worry about Schlarmann moving on - true blue all the way. Would a former UK player be a candidate? Dermonti Dawson? Any others who have some coaching experience and deep ties to UK? Hate to keep playing this roulette with staff members. It shows we're doing something right but we need continuity and some budding superstars to continue our upward movement in the conference. I'm sure Stoops has some candidates in mind. Hope they're good ones like JS and EW.

Honestly, I would love to have Drake. He doesn't have the experience yet so it won't happen. I think someday, whenever he is done chasing his NFL dreams, he will be on staff as a GA.

I have done both and found both good for the soul... 🤪😊

Is there an official announcement that Wolf has left? I see a lot of reports that Bama is interested but haven't saw that a hire has been made.

Yes. It is official now. Headlines in the Bama newspaper and on Finebaum show.

@600,000 his first year, it doesn't seem likely to me. I think we only paid Coen something like $750,000 for his first contract.
Marrone made $755,000 at Bama this season, was set to make $800,000 in 2022. If they offered Wolford Marrone's scheduled pay, I doubt we even tried. Maybe. Injuries or no, 7-8 sacks in Citrus Bowl leave me ambivalent about him after reflection. I'm betting Stoops and Coen might have felt the same way... "Well, OK, Eric. Thanks."

Maybe he wanted to go somewhere he could just tell a GA to stand on the sled (with added weight) and tell the unit to alternate a bit and turn around at Huntsville?

Thanks for posting. Kromer checks some important boxes. He's familiar with the offense and Coen, has some nice experience, and spent 4 years as a student assistant for Bob in Norman. Makes sense.

Also, his youth might play well in recruiting. He can always call upon a colleague to help add some gravitas to the pitch... like Coen or Settle.

How about your ol coach? Iowa puts plenty of OL talent on the field and in the nfl
Appreciate the compliment, but the jury is still out on the current Iowa OL coach as he's only been at Iowa for a year. And this past year Iowa probably had as poor OL play as we have seen here in several years. Not sure if it was just about the young and inexperienced OL Iowa had, or the new OL coach struggling in adjusting, or a combination of both.

Am I remembering right that we hired Wolford before coen? Seems like we zeroed in on him pretty quick after that staff at SC fell apart. If so, it might've just been a weird fit anyway
