What was the justification for making Kentucky a six-class state for HS FB?

UHA had something like 60 students and won a KHSAA state basketball title. If you think privates don't have an advantage then you are delusional..

New Cath perfected it in the 80s and 90s.
I grew up playing in northern Ky. Two of my best friends and team mates all through little league/pee wee sports ended up at New cath. Neither kid was catholic, and still tell me to this day they have no idea who paid their tuition. they know their family didn't. One of them was one of the best athletes to ever play there. The other was a very good football player.

And Male is the 2nd best 6A team. Wow, St X had 3rd and 4 at midfield with 2 mins left, and just needed 4+ yards to ice the game, and they throw a 45 yard bomb for a TD catching everyone off guard, to go up 10. X wins by 10.
All I heard about this year was how good Male was and their vaunted Defense. They looked poorly coached to me, and my offense when i coached in junior high ran more diverse plays. St.X played good defense and Male couldn't stop the X quarterback.

South Warren isn't giving male a good game
South Warren wouldn’t give Male a game? Are you kidding? St. X was barely beating Bowling Green late into the game before scoring a couple times to make it look worse than it was and just beat Male. SW dominated bowling green both times they played. Male isnt as good as what people think just because they are in 6A. I’d take South Warren over Male.

One guy said South Warren wouldn’t give Male a game in this thread. That’s absurd. Male was overhyped all year. St. X and South Warren are clearly the 2 best teams in the state this year. Would be a hell of a game to see.

When you get to championship level football, COACHING MATTERS! you just can't beat teams because you are bigger or have more athletes. South Warren looked well coached, and Male did not, simple as that

Without a doubt. Obviously you have to have good players but everybody has good players at that level. Coaching separates the good from the great. And I wouldn’t pick any coach in the State over Brandon and Chuck Smith. 2 brilliant football minds.

I read Male's kids QB also passed away a couple days B4 which I'm sure effected him. Male beat X earlier in the year. Boyle beat FD and BG worse than SW so I guess they're better SW. Of course that logic doesn't work

Male QB lost his father early this week. Unfortunately they didn’t play well last night. Feel really bad for that kid. He’s a heck of a player. The St X QB had a great game and Coach Wallace coached to win going for it on 4th down and throwing the surprise TD pass late

Transitive property isn’t a good thing to use but sometimes it’s all we have. However, I watched Male and they have some athletes but I don’t think they’re as well coached as South. I think south is the better team.

I played against their late 80s teams. It was simply impossible for a school that size (2A, and I'm pretty sure they were actually playing up from 1A) to have the depth of size they had up front... I'm not talking D-1 size or talent necessarily, but 3 deep lines where the kids were all fit and in the 6-0 to 6-4 and 220 to 260 range, with some outlier D-1 kids like Frank Jacobs thrown in for a cherry on top. They took the field looking like a Hitler Youth platoon. At the time, being a Scots-Irish kid from Central KY, I wrote it off to them being a pack of Cincy metro Germans, Poles, and Czechs. Looking back over the years, I realized they simply didn't just have that embarrassment of riches by chance.

I attended NewCath well before 80's. A big reason they had so many good football players back then was that Bishop Brossart in the south end of Campbell County didn't start football until after 2000. Yet, there was a good/decent little league football program there. Net, if you want to play football at a Catholic school and for a very good coach - Bob Schneider (my freshman coach) - NewCath was the only option. So they got a lot of players districted for Brossart. Call that recruiting if you like. And they were never going to out-recruit Highlands. Net, where the hell else were they going to recruit from? Ohio? Kenton County (CovCath)? LOL. The effects of Brossart having football now show on NewCath today. Oh, there are near zero Slavs in Campbell. But more Germans (like me, mainly) than anywhere in KY as a percentage.

Still think private schools should play in their own division not only in football but also the other sports. They don't adhere to the rules that the public schools do but take the public school titles. How many times has a private school taken the place of a very deserving public school in the title games? Way too often!

Back then a lot of good football players went to Cincinnati Moeller and Saint X to play. I don't think they are allowed to do that anymore. My one buddy that played for NewCath absolutely lived in Covington, about two blocks from me. Of course back then CovCath was horrible in football. I think my senior year at Holmes, CovCath was 0-10

Here's a few facts that are interesting, tells a lot about football in KY. The state of Mississippi has a population if 2.98 million and has 256 high school football programs and 6 class system. Kentucky's population is 4.68 million and has 213 high school football programs out of 538 total schools, 443 public and 95 private and a 6 class system. Alabama has a population of 4.9 million with 324 high school football programs and 7 class system. There are more schools in KY not playing football than play. In the Jackson Purchase there are 2 condolidated Count schools that don't have football and 1 Catholic school and a couple of Christian schools, to my knowledge and Fulton City didn't field a team because of numbers. Right next door is Livingston and Lyon counties and neither have football. Ofcourse all these schools have basketball and baseball. Looking at the numbers there are many youngsters that will never know if their talents would excel in the sport of football.

According to this:

KY has 393 public high schools, 160 have under 200 total enrollment of which, almost all are alternative schools. I'm not aware of any of the all-girls schools that have a football team.

I graduated in 2011 from CovCath. The football team has improved drastically. We never beat Highlands or went very far in the state tournament.

There is a couple of them that do. 😂

Yea, OH banned non-OH residents from playing HS sports there mainly over the Moeller & StX KY players & their athletic dominance. I think that happened before 1980. CC didn't field a football team till 1968 despite being larger than NewCath, but like you say, they were for sh!t for 10-15 years. As easy/easier to get to NewCath as to CovCath from many places inside city of Covington. Had a classmate from Ludlow.

You're absolutely right. We lived in extreme east Covington and could be in Newport in less than 10 minutes

More kids getting more of a chance to play more games, while I agree 6 classes is a bit much,, I think it's a good thing because it can be seen as a positive because it allows for mor participation

Be tough to argue that this has not been good for Kentucky football talent at the high school level. We, as a state, are turning out much better football recruits than basketball now.

I think the excitement of more teams competing for playoffs may have contributed? Possibly?

Didn't realize there were any all girl public high schools. The state of Kentucky lacks only 320,000 being 2 million larger than Mississippi, how many of those you think are under 200 enrollment, they have 43 more teams than KY with football programs. Alabama only has about 300,000 more population than KY but 111 more school that have football. The big difference is most schools in those 2 states focus on football like KY does basketball and baseball.

Didn't mean to imply they were public. Sorry.

It’s a lot easier to produce better football recruits than basketball. There’s far more players and you can be different body types. In basketball, if you’re not at least 6-foot-5 to 6-foot-7, your chances are so limited.

Other side of argument is that some kids were never going to public school. St Henry won All A hoops with a team made up of mainly alumni kids and from natural feeder schools.
Public schools like Beechwood and Highlands get their share of out of area kids. Even within Kenton County, you can go to whichever school you want as long as they have room for you. Think Simon Kenton would turn away a Dixie kid if he was a stud athlete? They have been on the receiving end of kids in Scott's district. Kids are making athletic choices within public school ranks. There are other counties that allow as well.
There are too many football divisions and too many teams qualify. To watch Beechwood play first 2 or 3 games is a joke. They already killed Holy Cross, there was never any doubt it would not happen again. 3 or 4 max divisions.

It's definitely watered down the championships by a lot. That being said, it does let a lot more schools play an extra game or two each year which has a benefit. But it doesn't mean nearly as much now to win a championship as it used to.

Holmes won the Basketball State championship in 2009. I'd bet they were the last team to win a state championship in basketball with kids that actually lived in the district

Public schools had been complaining to the KHSAA for years about recruiting by Catholic schools. The KHSAA said “bring us proof.” A Tate’s Creek parent recorded a phone conversation of his child being recruited by Lexington Catholic. When the tape was presented to the KHSAA they did nothing. As a result, there was a major push to separate public and private schools. The 6 classes was a last resort by the KHSAA to keep the private and public schools from separating. Some classes only have 34 or 35 schools now.
In Louisville, the public schools recruit, as well. Public school coaches go to middle school football and basketball games and recruit. I have seen it and heard high school coaches brag about it.

“Public school titles?”

“Public school titles?”
This makes sense conceptually. The challenge is there aren’t many private schools in number but so be it I guess. Could maybe muster 2 private classes of about 20 teams maybe?
Tennessee has two divisions. But they have 70 or so private schools competing.

I would also add that before TN had two divisions they played private schools up in class to compensate for their ability to go out of area. I think they multiplied the number by 1.8 and used that to classify.

Trinity was down this year and very young. They will be back to their dominant self next season. Good to let Male or X have one every decade or so.
Trinity is done forever now. They lost their entire history amd their future with Beatty. Firmly #3 behind X and Male from now on.
