What is happening at Memphis?

Not true. Memphis when they was still known as Memphis State had several stout years when Dana Kirk was coach there. Made the Sweet 16 or further 4 years in a row, and in 85 made the Final 4 losing to eventual champ Villanova in Rupp. Guys like William Bedford, Vincent Askew, Keith Lee, Andre Turner, Sylvester Gray, Baskerville Holmes, Elliot Perry made Memphis State a very formidable team all throughout the 80's into the 90's. Players like Lorenzen Wright and Hardaway kept Memphis winning.
What is really great and we talk about KY boys playing for UK, the 84-85 team all but 1 of the 12 players was from Memphis or Shelby County.
Made the NCAA tournament 7 times in the 80's
81-82 - (24-5) At one point was ranked #1 in both polls in the 82 season (Keith Lee team) Finished ranked #9
82-83 - (23-8) Beat Georgetown and Patrick Ewing in the tournament, then lost to #1 Houston and Phi Slamma Jamma led by Hakeem Olajuwon. finished 17th ranked in the final poll
83-84 - (26-7) - Lost to Houston in Sweet 16. 16th rank in the final poll.
84-85 - (31-4) - Lost in the Final 4 to Nova in Rupp. 5th in final poll.
85-86 - (28-6) - Lost to LSU on a buzzer beater with the famous clip of Dale Brown running around after the buzzer sounded. Finished 12th in the final poll.
86-87 - (26-8) Larry Finch's first year as coach. beat Louisville by 23 in the finals of the Metro Conf. tournament.
Hey, I was curious what your ties are to Memphis, if you went there or? Seemed oretty
Knowledgeable about them. I didn’t know they were previously called a different name etc.

Hiring Penny was a big mistake. There was no evidence that coaching an AAU team had him ready for big time college hoops. Hell, Stackhouse coached in the G League, knew his X and Oscar, and still couldn't do anything beyond frustrating Cal a couple times. Penny wasn't half the coach Stack is.

So we got NIL now, and Penny's dudes are still personally handing stacks to players & recruits instead of having boosters, oh, employers do it! Stupid!

Penny had exactly ONE player coming back from last year's team, ONE. The rest either graduated out or transferred. Now he has fired 4 of his 6 staffers.

No way Penny is the coach there next year IMHO.

Anyone else find it funny that the NCAA acts on anonymous letters in a time where we are openly discussing how much players are paid?
Not really. Because there s nothing in the article that says the NCAA is acting on the letter. And the letter mentions academic violations, which is still against the rules.

Honestly, Memphis should think of hiring Stackhouse if they get rid of Penny. I know Stackhouse didn't have a great win-loss record at Vandy and only made 2 NITs but he never seemed like a good fit for Vandy anyway, which is a hard enough place to recruit to. At Memphis you have the FedEx money and its a fertile recruiting ground for the right coach.

And Memphis needs to make a splash somewhere if they want to escape the G5.

Nah, just a huge fan of college basketball from the 80's. Loved the Memphis State teams along with the Big East teams Syracuse (Pearl Washington), St. Johns (Walter Berry is one of my favorite players), Houston (Phi Slamma Jamma), UNLV (early 90's), etc. The Big East with Syracuse, St. Johns, and Georgetown was a very good league.
I graduated high school in 1986, so I loved 80's basketball. Not a popular view on here, but Duke guard Johnny Dawkins along with Syracuse PG Pearl Washington, had a really big influence on my personal basketball game. Loved Dawkins' silky smooth mid range jumper, and Pearl with his ball handling and ability to get to the rim.

Whoa. Nothing says stable environment than moves like this.

Yeah, Stansbury may be a jerk and a UK hater, but he knows basketball. He's probably not a great recruiter, but he was probably the best X's and O's guy on that staff, and that includes Penny, who really isn't even a good coach. He's just a name.

If I had to guess (and I haven't read this entire thread to see if others have already said this- they probably have), I would guess these coaching moves are all about recruiting. He's probably got some guys potentially coming who have made some demands- they want their high school coach or their AAU coach or a parent or relative. That kind of crap happens pretty often, as we all know, but the best programs and coaches know better than to allow recruits make demands and call the shots. When they're allowed to call the shots on the way in, they often become a detriment to the team and brats pitching fits who are uncoachable.

It's unwise, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Penny, in his desperation, went along with it.

Penny is the college basketball version of Coach Prime, who will probably suffer the same fate.
