Watching the ESPN 30 for 30 on Cal thread.

I have never been in favor of the rule of one and done. This short movie has shown me another light that shines on what Cal does and why. He is about kids and their families and getting them out of the struggles they are going through. I still hate the rule, but I support our coach and know now he is all about doing the right thing for the kids. The last bit of the movie caught me shedding a tear. I am 68 years old, I pray he is the Kentucky coach until I am gone and beyond. I trust and support John Calipari to lead the #1 program of all time going forward. We are in good hands.

I don't want another coach either. I just wish Cal would have been here sooner. But timing is everything and it worked out right.

But we all wanted a coach that was like Pitino of the 90s (but a better person) and we knew Tubby and Gillispie were not it. Those ar guys that are not blue blood coaches. We got a guy who is perfect for our program.

What did you all learn that you didn't know and what did you love the most?

I loved seeing him tell the players they got cheated at A & M. I get sick of the PC BS. Cal called it like it was. We did get cheated on that call.

One thing I didn't know was that Cal is on the phone with people and he knows where a player is going before it was announced (Murray).

The ref he was yelling at (he called him Anthony I think) did several of our games this year, and it sure seemed almost all of his calls went against us. Vin Diesel lookalike.

Cal taking this job has brought us so many fantastic memories. We are very fortunate.

When Cal told Wall to take his whole team to the NBA, that is the moment Wall became a leader and who he is today.
Cousins grew up so much as well. If he went straight to the NBA, he may have become Daniel Orton.

I don't know how you guys sat through those awful ESPN promos. Glad I DVR'd it.

And there is no one better in college to tell you like it is and too look out for YOU more than Cal. Knox and Bamba and any other big name should've taken notice.
If they didn't, they were never coming here.

Loved the Camby and Rose segments as well, along with the Cal moment in front of all his guys at the HOF induction.

Loved it; almost all of the 30 for 30s are fantastic.

Interesting that one of the overall points of the film (how Cal inspires emotional responses, both positive and negative) plays out on this board every day...

As to where this ranks among 30 for 30s.....isn't it just a 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' kind of deal? It's not like there is something authoritative that ranks this thing, or even something like Rotten Tomatoes that suggestively does. I think Halle Berry is the height of it all, you think Kate Upton (fill in the blank with more socially current/relevant names, heh)......There have surely been some good ones, but because this one is about our coach, it's my favorite - it appeals to me in a way that one about Chris Herron, good as it was, simply can't.....

No one asked you you to care or to say it's better. Two people were talking about where it would rank in terms of overall subject quality despite us liking this movie.

And it's "couldn't care less."
And you felt the need for a smart ass response why? Siskel & Ebert would be proud of your colorful critique.

Interested in some opinions on this. Yesterday, talking to my dad, he talked to a guy in our hometown who had a recent interaction with Cal. He said he didn't care for Cal, and then said "he's not a very nice guy."

Has anyone else heard something similar? I've interacted with him a bit, but more importantly I've watched him and talked to several others, and they all say the exact opposite thing. Very down to earth, absolutely no airs, raised poor and hasn't forgotten it so he can relate to everyone from janitor to CEO, extroverted so loves people, etc. etc. One of my closest friends was walking on the beach in Florida a few years ago, he comes Cal of all people. Sees his UK hat or shirt or whatever, and stops to talk for 15 minutes. My friend didn't stop him, didn't ask for an autograph or anything. Cal just talked to him because he felt like it.

It's the opposite of when Rick was in Lexington - which is when I was in school, so I was around him too, and heard stories about him. Rick isn't an extrovert. He has a circle of friends, and if you are inside the circle, loyalty is everything, he'll do anything for you. If you are outside the circle, he won't walk across the street to pee on your leg were it on fire. Frankly, he never cared for most UK fans - he too thinks "you people are crazy", but not like Cal believes it.....

Anyway, this is just the kind of thing where fans can put a guy on a pedestal, see only the good, exaggerate his good, and be blind to anything else. But I surely haven't heard anyone say Cal isn't a good dude........

Just curious.....

Heard nothing but good things about Cal. People jump out of the bushes and ask for an autograph and he obliges. Nobody can be pleasant 100 percent of the time but he seems to come close.

I watched it twice today after being unable to watch last night. Thing that stood out the most to me was how loyal Calipari is to his players. He’s a man who is willing to fall on the sword for his guys. You could hear how much his players appreciate his authenticity when Roe, Rose, Wall, Cousins, Camby, and Wagner were being interviewed.

That was an incredible 30 for 30.

To me it just proves what most of us think anyhow. Cal is real warts and all just like all of us.
Camby impressed me a lot. Took ownership of what happened and even paid the school back the money. Meanwhile Chris Webber still acts innocent.
I loved it. Great stuff. Cal getting emotional was the kicker.

Just watched it.

Any kid that has pro aspirations, whether it be one or two and done, should play under Cal.

Thanks Tex! It was number two for me. It was kind of freak thing this time around but the pain I felt was just like the first time. Fortunately I didn't wait around 4 days before going to the hospital.
fwiw mine was in hoops season and had to miss seeing a game. Cats were rough on our hearts a few times this past season. [smoke]

Is it just me, or did anyone else come away with even more questions about who WWW is?

I mean this dude seems to pop up everywhere and no one really knows anything specific about him other than the fact that he is a connected dude.

Is he officially affiliated with anyone, does he have a job and title?

Does he hook other coaches up with talent, or is he a Cal exclusive?

When he's at big time games, an AAU tourney, other big basketball events, is he there on his own dime or someone else's?

Is he the John Wick or some sort of secret basketball underworld?

As far as the Memphis/D Rose situation, there are several things that remain unclear to me.
If the NCAA reviews a player and gives clearance, how can they retroactively deem them ineligible? Most or all coaches would play a kid if the NCAA granted them eligible. The clearinghouse/eligibility folks gave the approval so its on them if they didn't do their due diligence looking into the matter.

I spent some time with Wes a few years ago. He was at, of all places, the UK Father/Son basketball camp. Seemed like a good dude to me. One point I recall him making is that he's pretty tight with several coaches (he specifically mentioned K), but he said because so many people dislike Calipari, they only focus on his relationship with Cal and want to make it seem like a bad thing. I saw he and Cal interact - they seemed like friends, but not like really good friends, if that makes sense....

Here's an old story on him in the New York Times:

Why can't the NCAA move as quickly as they did for Umass and Memphis and move quicker on UNC and UL. Yes the cases are more involved being just 1 player compared to years and years of cheating but damn, NCAA get off your high horse and grow some balls.
The short answer is that both cases were pretty simple and UMass and Memphis didn't fight it so it didn't have to go back and forth and finished up quickly.

The best analysis is to think of the Clearing House like the IRS. The Clearing House determines your eligibility by the score that is turned in. With about 125,000 incoming freshman, they don't go through and analyze all scores. But, if at some point, it becomes questionable if the person cheated, they can ask for proof. Similarly, just because you finish your taxes and they are excepted, does not mean that the IRS cannot come back at a letter date if it is determined that you might have cheated.

It was interesting to see a glimpse into college basketball recruiting. Wes has his "nephews" (elite players that he takes under his wing) and funnels them into Cal/UK/Krzyzewski/Duke and probably other Nike schools. Everybody benefits. Wes benefits. The coaches benefit. And of course the players benefit by leaving school after a year and entering the draft to make millions. It's a machine at this point. Interesting that it started with Derrick Rose. Wes is the mastermind behind the one and done movement

After the Cal-Chaney incident didn't Chaney come out in a straight jacket or some similar concept to make light of it? I believe he did.

He has actually done a 180 on Cal. In that piece in 2011 he was one of Cal's biggest defenders.

OK, good. I did not know that. The whole episode where he blew up was him being a sore loser because they lost the game. I sure wish 30 for 30 would have shown him now being a supporter.

Didn't they clear Rose twice, though?
So they went through the first step and clear.
Then "hey, wait a minute..." And clear again.

Then after the season they don't have any proof of anything and deem him retroactively ineligible?
How's that work?

I think you are exactly right. I think they said you can play him, so they did......they then came back and said "oops, you shouldn't have played him." So what's he supposed to freaking do ??

I agree that it would have been good to hear from Chaney, especially if he's changed his views on Calipari. Don't understand just showing him in a 20 year old video clip and just leaving it there.

I think the point was to show the intensity of reaction that Cal elicits from people.

Memphis was contacted prior to the start of the season about Rose's score. Rose himself was contacted more than once about the score. At no time after Memphis was contacted initially was Rose given the green light. They took the chance by playing him and paid the consequences for doing so.

My wife, a non basketball fan; loved it. She was most intrigued by how he was "found" by just being in the bleachers and watching the camp at Robert Morris.
