Watching the ESPN 30 for 30 on Cal thread.

Great show. It really shows how Cal care for his players. Proved that Cal knew nothing about Camby or Memphis.
Now NCAA grow some balls and go after the UNC**cheaters.

You do realize many might be, you know, WATCHING IT, right?!?!?!

But because they don't log on to here to talk to you about it while it's going on, they must not be interested... Good stuff!!

doesnt stop them when someone misses a free throw or decides to go pro.

Saw a guy on Twitter make a good point, that from a documentary stand point it would have been interesting to have more of his critics, but that wouldn't happen bc ppl like forde and bob knight just want to say things but they arent tough enough to be interviewed about him

I missed it...UGH...but I found that it's coming on again at 2:00am on ESPN2 so I have the DVR set to record. Can't wait now!!!

Swaggy Cal brings out the haters. It is tough to see Cal from an outside perspective, but he is a great coach in a time when hypocrisy reigns supreme.

Yeah, the NCAA REALLY cares deeply about academic integrity.

Pretty clear to me now why he pushes players out the door, if Wagner doesn't declare for the draft when he does he would have never been drafted and made millions.
The Dejuan Wagner part was interesting, I had no idea he had to retire from that. I think that was the turning point for cal and not letting guys come back if they are a lottery pick.
Yep, that was the most illuminating part. You could tell it scared Cal (like the way you get scared after you almost have a car wreck, when the danger is already past), and he said that was a turning point....

A few things I learned or confirmed while watching One and Not Done...

1. Bobby Knight, Jim Calhoun and Pat Forde just can't help being what they are...enormous pricks.
2. I'm a man but, I'm not afraid to say it...I LOVE JOHN WALL.
3. Cal is driven to win like very few in this world.
4. It was almost exactly one year from the time allegations were made by the NCAA that Derrick Rose falsified his SAT scores, that the Memphis banner came down. Yet, the UNCheat and HookerU scandals linger on.
5. The first outlet that does a live pay-per-view uncensored feed of Cal from the sidelines during a game can just please take my money!

By the way, I'll say it again - all UK fans (and Cal haters) should be made to read this 2011 Sports Illustrated piece on Calipari. Much like tonight, although it's fair and includes some stuff that's not favorable, overall he comes out looking pretty good.

https://www.si.com/vault/2011/03/14...ccessful-why-john-calipari-cant-catch-a-break

One person that doesn't come out looking too good is Rick Pitino. I thought this 30 for 30 might get into the 'Carnasecca has cancer' story, but they didn't. When that SI came out, Cal said he figured the story must have been pretty good to him "since none of the triumvirate were retweeting it" all over the place. It's thought he was referring to Forde, O'Neil and Thamel.

It's noteworthy that Forde didn't have anything to say on Twitter tonight - that's how you know for sure Cal came out of this show looking good....

Fyi: while this was airing and both cal and the documentary were trending nationally on Twitter, he was tweeting from the game Derek was playing in at the same time the doc aired.
didn't the team get a private screening before it aired ?

I've read that piece and can also highly recommend it. Actually, using that article as a follow-up for tonight's 30 For 30 would be a great idea.

Why can't the NCAA move as quickly as they did for Umass and Memphis and move quicker on UNC and UL. Yes the cases are more involved being just 1 player compared to years and years of cheating but damn, NCAA get off your high horse and grow some balls.

"I have learned throughout my career that coaching for fame and fortune is fleeting. On the other hand, by creating relationships with others and chasing their dreams and aspirations with them, you become a DREAM FULFILLER. And what's better than that?"

Absolutely amazing piece!! I'm not going to lie, I was very hesitant about them making this when I first heard they were going to do it. I thought it was going to be another Calipari slam fest and I thought it could possibly hurt us and recruiting. I couldnt have been more wrong. I should've know though! I should've known because of the person that Calipari has become over the years that has led him to this point. Sure, there were sure haters on there (insert Jim Calhoun's face here) but Cal smashed everyone of them with logic and reasoning and never wavered from La Familia. He never wavered from the fact that these boys are his kids. These boys are his beating heart.

He made very valid points about a number of topics and drilled home the fact that he is all about these kids. One of the best parts of the nights is when Calhoun is running his trap about getting the players to stay for another year or two for the "betterment of the game," only to hear Cal say in the next frame, "that's what people say when it's somebody else's kid making a decision. Nobody ever says that when it's their own kid."

I just thought that was so perfect of a comeback and so true also. Everyone who says that has never had a child in that situation or never needed to be in that situation. He just drilled home the message even further that he's all about his players.

The final segment at his HOF speech was amazing as well. I can't ever remember seeing him get that emotional, he couldn't control his emotions when he saw so many of his former players standing in front of him. It was an awesome moment to see and even brought a tear to my eye. It was the final quote from his speech that summed up everything and gave us a glimpse of the man he is today. I thought the quote was amazing.

A Dream Fulfiller! What's better than that?

Well done and I came away more supportive of Cal than I had been, despite thinking he is the best in the business. NCAA should be ashamed of themselves. Although I do think it showed the difference between the cheaters, prostitute U and Memphis was Memphis acknowledged that they used ineligible players. So, all college educated people should know that one should never accept any responsibility.

I also would have preferred to hear from fans other people behind the scenes and administrators rather than journalists who have already had their say on Cal.

I will say.. for me, yeah this is amazing. But if I take my Kentucky/Cal love out of it, this is NOT the best 30for30.. There's another 5 that are automatically at the top.

Love it because it's about Cal but no way in hell is this top five or even top 10. But it's good.

My favs
The U
Fab Five
Pony Excess
Unguarded
Of Miracles and Men
The Marninovich Project
Youngstown Boys
Two Escobars
Four Falls of Buffalo
The U part 2
Catholics vs Covicts

The above films are great but they're super dramatic. I'll buy this one and I loved it but it's not better than those above.

It's a prime example of how bad calls can quickly be forgotten.

48 hours later the Laettner shot happened. So, who cares about the UMass coach being whistled for being out of the box, right?
I have to admit that was an eye opener. A dang ref can make a call in a close game and kill you. It has happened against us and for us. The two T's in question, one against Humprey and one against Cal were game changers and extremely questionable. I came away convinced Cal has few friends in the business other than his players, ex-players and fans. That is all he needs IMO. Let the rest of the world hate.

Successful people will always be hated by those whose self respect is fragile.

Monday I believe.
My point was that while everyone was watching and talking about him, he was watching and talking about one of his players.
Of course
Didn't mean to come across as minimizing that
You made a great point, he cares about his guys
Love that about Cal

We sure have alot of movie critics on this board. I watched an insightful infomercial about my favorite subject. I could care less if some think a drug crazed baller doc is better, I'll take this story everytime.

No one asked you you to care or to say it's better. Two people were talking about where it would rank in terms of overall subject quality despite us liking this movie.

And it's "couldn't care less."

I recorded it and watched it later last night. I thought it was really good. A lot of it was stuff that most any UK/Cal fan would already know, but I thought the show filled in some details or at least made it more real with the clips from the time that things happened.

Having Knight & Calhoon on there sucked, but they served a purpose of setting up a contrast in philosophies.

I thought the best parts were the behind the scenes game stuff & sideline stuff. I didn't grow up around sports, so I've never known what coaches are saying on the sidelines. Would pay for more of that.

It was great to see Cal in a slightly different context. We usually just see him pushing a few talking points.

I wish I could work for a guy like Cal. I've met a few people like him that just really motivate others. Makes you feel good and makes you want to be better, do more, etc... Charisma.
