Watching the ESPN 30 for 30 on Cal thread.

Memphis was contacted prior to the start of the season about Rose's score. Rose himself was contacted more than once about the score. At no time after Memphis was contacted initially was Rose given the green light. They took the chance by playing him and paid the consequences for doing so.
The 30-30 made it seem like it they only found out before the final four that it MIGHT be invalidated.

My ACT score was held almost 6 months after everyone else had got their scores. No reason given. Then when I got my score, I had increased by 9 points.
Never was I given ANY explanation or reasoning. My counselor just assumed it must have been the score jump.

My wife, a non basketball fan; loved it. She was most intrigued by how he was "found" by just being in the bleachers and watching the camp at Robert Morris.

Me, too. Isn't that amazing? Robert Morris of all places.

Memphis was first contacted about the scores in October 2007 from the scoring agency and Rose was contacted directly in November 2007. Since Rose did not cooperate after numerous requests, the NCAA then notified Memphis that it might be invalidated. This is all on Rose imo.

It's obvious what happened. He cheated. So in the end I only have so much sympathy for Memphis. What bothers me more is UNC gets away with their sins.

I don't know enough to dispute this - but that's not the way Vitale tells the tale. He says the clearinghouse cleared Rose, and the two other times after the issue came up Memphis asked the NCAA if they were sure Rose was good, and both times the answer was yes. So 3 thumbs up from the NCAA on Rose to Memphis, only to after the fact use a strict liability standard.

I agree that it would have been good to hear from Chaney, especially if he's changed his views on Calipari. Don't understand just showing him in a 20 year old video clip and just leaving it there.
I have no idea what goes into initial decisions about content and then later editorial decisions. The two most interesting parts to me of the SI piece were, one, the rumor that Cal told a recruit that Lou Carnasecca had cancer to get the kid to switch to Pitt, and two, the story about how Cal got the UMass job. In both stories, Pitino comes out looking like a snake (maybe that's why I liked them. Heh). The UMass story may not be that important, but the Carnasecca story certainly was. As Bruiser Flynt said, that was the beginning of Cal hate, because it allowed people to think and say that "Cal will do anything to get a recruit." If that was the beginning point of all the Cal controversy, and especially if later proved to be a false rumor, looks like that would have added to the film...

Didn't they clear Rose twice, though?
So they went through the first step and clear.
Then "hey, wait a minute..." And clear again.

Then after the season they don't have any proof of anything and deem him retroactively ineligible?
How's that work?
Iirc didn't someone admit to have taken test for him of which I don't understand how one could actually get away with doing such?

They do that because the ACT has a universal max improvement threshold of 7 points. If you improve more than that then they immidiatly red flag it and do a little investigation.

Oddly enough, isn't that the same reasoning the NCAA gave for NOT pursuing/punishing Lance Thomas and Duke.............because he (nor the store) cooperated?? Supposedly their "hands were tied".

Funny how that works.

Truly amazing!

I'm not going to read all the responses to this, so if it has been mentioned and beat to death my apologies, but one negative aspect of the one and dones is the perception these kids stop going to class (if they ever did) after Xmas. I wish that was addressed in the 2 hours - however admittedly this wasn't about one and dones, it was about Cal's timeline into becoming a major factor in College Basketball. They touched on Derek Rose (while avoiding the most obvious questions) but did really hit on these one and dones truly being student athletes while they are in school.

On here we get to read about our guys showing up for 8am classes the day after an away game, but to many naysayers across the nation, we're just like North Carolina.

The first time I watched it, I didn't tear up when Cal did. The 2nd time I watched it this morning, I teared up big time. Both for Cal and for my great UK memories since I was a kid. How lucky we are to have UK Basketball as a piece of our lives from start to finish.

Had it taped and just now had a chance to watch it.

Loved it, just...loved it.

So glad Cal is our coach.

That said....screw Jim Calhoun, I hate that guy with a passion. What a huge POS.
