Vaught: Kyle Macy had to convince Joe B. to let him transfer to UK

Interesting to hear that we likely could’ve had Macy straight out of high school if we just would’ve waited a bit longer. Macy on the 77 team likely would’ve meant another national championship.

That was also around the same time that ole Joe B was refusing to offer Larry Bird. Seems his player assessment skills may’ve been a wee bit off in those days.

Coach Hall won a NC and almost won another. It is always easy to criticize from outside, but a lot harder to be the man and make all the decisions.

Bird was uncomfortable at a large University like Indiana and likely would have felt the same at UK.
Exactly plus Larry Bird is a still a Hoosier at the end of the day so thanks but no thanks. Even if he crawled here on his hands and knees I’d say keep on crawling Easterns only a few more miles

I cannot see the article but do have a side story on Larry Bird. He was an invitee to the Derby Classic in the early days when it was Kentucky/Indiana against the US. We were watching the game and he had a contingent of fans (probably about 500) that were very vocal whenever he did anything. In that game, he didn’t look very good but an all star setting was not a great platform for him at that time. My evaluation skills weren’t the best anyway - saw Louie Dampier in KY-IN all star game at Freedom Hall and said he would never play at UK.

This is such dumb logic. Saying you don’t want Indiana players is akin to saying you don’t want most of our national titles, don’t want the legend of Rupp’s Runts, don’t want most of our best ever teams. Indiana recruits have been very good for UK, indeed vital to our historical success.

Some random thoughts about that photo:
Sky Walker was/is one cool dude.
Macy's game wouldn't translate well to today's game. But damn he was a great point guard in the 70s.
Joe Hall once owned a bank. It was continually robbed. Know why? Hall kept telling the guards not to shoot.

I would have had a different routine shooting free throws if Macy hadn’t came to UK. I loved rubbing my socks before every shot from the line.

Kentucky has always recruited Indiana well especially during the Joe Hall days. I don't how many Mr. Basketballs they got out of there but I remember Jim Master, Roger Hardin also James Blackman (he didn't win Mr. Basketball but was a damn good player). Plus I am sure Joe B. pissed Bobby Knight off when he got those guys. Lot's of talent that has come out of there over the years.

There was a long stretch from late-Rupp through Pitino’s arrival when Indiana was kinda like our go to place for guards. If you look through our rosters from around the mid-60s through the early 90s seems like there was at least one Indiana guard starting in our backcourt almost every year (see Louie Dampier, Tommy Kron, Larry Steele, Mike Flynn, Kyle Macy, Jim Master, Roger Harden, James Blackmon, Sean Woods, etc.).

I knew there were a lot more I just couldn't remember all of them! That's quite the list when you think about it.
