UK football and the December transfer portal

WI OT Trey Wedig entered the transfer portal this weekend. UK did not recruit Wedig in hs and Stoops has generally not had recruiting traction in the state of WI. There is no public evidence that Wedig is talking with UK's coaches. Most likely, nothing will happen here. But Wedig would seem to fit UK's OT needs perfectly. I would have to think our coaches will at least inquire.

Rumor circulating online this evening that Jordan Dingle may withdraw his name from the portal, like Porter just did. At this point, who knows? But if Dingle wants playing time, he should get that at UK. The injury was the limiting issue this year. If he wants to play with a headliner QB for a former NFL OC, he gets that at UK.
Rumors of tampering from Tennessee on this dude from what I read.

Actually, no. Our fans can forget about Cottrell. There isn't even a dialog.

That didn't prove to be the case this year.

LOL. Good call there. That explains how Burton had scholarship offers from AL, TN, Ole Miss, MO, TX, and OK, in addition to OH St, OR, FL St, and Clemson. Burton is a sophomore this year. He has length and athleticism but is still filling out. It takes several seasons for most offensive linemen to develop.
Just gonna have to agree to disagree on that. Interior oline was a weak spot all year. Don’t see how anyone could say that was a good unit really.

I didn't say that. It is difficult to have a rational discussion when people misquote you, which seems to happen a lot here. I said Correll was looking at a lot of programs and, anyway, UK could use the scholarship better for an OT. If you were looking at the whole picture, you would see that Correll has already transferred to NC St. He was never focused on UK in the first place. A few fans leaped to an assumption because Correll's family had some connections here in Lexington. Jumping to conclusions also seems to happen a lot here.

If you bothered to read what I actually post, you would know that I think our OL play improved this year but not enough. That is a fact. We were last in the SEC in 2022 in giving up sacks, but we were 3rd in the SEC in sacks allowed in 2023. But there were still way too many illegal procedure and holding penalties and blown assignments anyway. That's why I unequivocally called for Zach Yenser to be fired and replaced by a more experienced position coach who could recruit effectively.

You can't separate the dysfunction on our OL as being IOL versus OTs. The OL is a unit. But we have young quality depth in our IOL. We didn't need Correll. In contrast, we are in trouble in our OT depth chart. Don't take my word for it. Look for yourself. This is a much bigger topic than Correll.

Former Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, current football coach at TN St, was just interviewed on TV. George says "kids are jumping into the portal for the bigger bag", a reference to players (like Justin Rogers) leaping into the portal for a bigger NIL deal. According to Coach George, players are "ruining their lives" by making money decisions before they understand how to manage money or organize their lives. Coach George predicts many players will suffer greatly for not learning how to be "grown men" before getting access to one large financial payment. He thinks associating with the right coaching staff that teaches responsibility and makes men out of teenage boys should be the players' priority. It was a longer discussion, very interesting. Very wise, intelligent gentleman.

It is public knowledge now that our coaches have been talking with Trayanum and Raheim Sanders. Both will have lots of options, so this visit by Trayanum is good news. If his knee is healthy, Sanders would probably be the better fit for Coach Coen. But nearly every SEC team will chase Sanders, who has at least 2 more seasons of eligibility. Trayanum is listed as a senior by OH St.

Sanders gained some weight from 22 to 23, it seemed to cut down on his quickness and taking more hits. Regardless he spent much of 23 at less than 100%. But that shouldn't be a permanent issue. He is one of the better backs in the conference when healthy.

ETN was leaning UGA until Friday, not sure what happened that's no longer the case. He wants to be the feature back and wants to win, Missouri will certainly feature him, but not sure about the winning part, they lose almost everyone except Cook and Burden. But ETN is a good back,

We can def agree on Yenser being horrible and needing more tackle depth. I’ll just leave it at that.

MO picked up a commitment over the weekend from Marcus Carroll of GA St, ranked by some as the #1 RB in the portal.

Another Aspirations Gym sucess story for UK. All the snaps and praise given by all the staff over him this yr, and someone else (prob UL) will reap the benefits.
This happens in every program. Whatever Reed's ultimate destination might be, he was buried on UK's depth chart and probably would have been buried even further behind our 2024 signees.

Having said that, the performance records of Reed, Dixon, and Goodwin have not exactly been impressive. This isn't the first time I have suggested that Marrow is wasting his time recruiting in greater Louisville and Jefferson Co. The quality of hs football has plummetted over there in recent years, along with the overall quality of life. It's a shame. But from a football point of view, Marrow should probably just confine his instate recruiting efforts mainly to Bowling Green, Hardin Co, metro Lexington including Danville, and metro Cincinnati. Perhaps occasionally Owensboro or Paducah, but not on a regular basis. This observation may not please everyone, but is hard to argue on actual merits.

Is Goodwin done with football? I would think so.

That's up to Goodwin. But he has blown his opportunity to be an SEC player. I have all the respect in the world for his concern for his mother. Anyone would. But OTOH, he is not the first football player with a sick family member. Maybe that is his reasoning for giving up his football career, or maybe a coach somewhere has told him to come back when he feels ready. But if he hasn't made an effort to stay in some kind of reasonable physical shape, he can forget that.

I’ve said for years that Louisville was a waste of time. Save for JJ Weaver and Cummings, we didn’t get much bang for our Buck over there. Time and money be better served on Ohio, Pennsylvania and other states in the South.

It was fun using Chris Vaughn's vendetta against Petrino and his former school for a couple of classes. Turn the page, on to more productive regions.

Lafondant has flipped to BC and Beau Allen evidently is back in the fold in Lexington now. That leaves seven open scholarships on UK's roster.

Even Weaver was a Ft. Lauderdale product and grew up down there before his family relocated to Jefferson Co. The whole issue with Cummings at UK was that he underachieved and couldn't get onto the field.

Also a possibility. But this would mean Stoops has hired, or at least come to agreement with, a new WR coach not known to the public. If my memory is working correctly, UK must publicly post a staff opening for a stipulated period of time before filling the position. If someone out there already knows they will be UK's next WR coach and is actively contacting players for Stoops, that would indicate the new coach is not a current member of an NFL staff or a college staff that is invited to a bowl. FWIW. Or perhaps a disciple of the Eric Wolford school of recruiting. LOL.
That dude most def recruited with an agenda

Meeks and Mews are two Georgia WR who are now in portal. Wonder if one of them might want to follow Brock?

This staff needs more of a recruiting attitude and agenda. Guys like Clink and Sumrall got it done on the trails, the replacements haven't.

You don't think Coach Collins and Coach Mike have been productive recruiters? I would have to disagree there.

I think weak recruiting was one of the reasons Woodward went down, and would agree with anyone who is concerned about Yenser's recruiting record. But they were not replacements for Clinkscale and Sumrall.

Rumors of tampering from Tennessee on this dude from what I read.
I have no problem believing that TN may have tampered with Dingle. This would strengthen TN's TE room while presumably weakening ours (although I am a big fan of Khamari Anderson). At the end of the day, this falls on Dingle. IMO he should feel some loyalty to Coach Marrow. If Dingle wants to transfer to TN, I will not hold my breath waiting for the NCAA to do anything about it because tampering is not easy to prove and it is no doubt happening a lot.

A quick note this morning on Beau Allen, who has now rejoined UK's football roster. This will cause great happiness with some UK fans because Allen is a legacy from the Lexington area.

Allen is strictly a depth piece. If Allen is in a game when it matters, that means Vangagriff is not available. That would mean trouble.

Some may say Allen never got a real chance during his first tour with UK. But that would not be accurate. Allen was in the QB competition but could not get onto the field. He left UK because he wanted to play, which is understandable. Since then, he has been productive at the United Athletic Conference level, which is FCS. In addition to Tarleton St, some other examples of UAC schools include EKU, Abilene Christian, and Southern UT.

Last year, Allen transferred again to GA Southern, but apparently could not get an NCAA waiver to play. Too many transfers. This could become a problem again with his current transfer but we will see. In any case, Allen is a good fit because Vandagriff is here but Sheron and Destin are gone. Allen adds another experienced body in our QB room. But he hasn't played football since 2022. Developing Cutter Boley is far more important than developing Beau Allen. I will be surprised if Beau actually plays an important snap. If he does, that means Vandagriff can't go and Boley isn't ready, which would not be good. Boley has to be the higher priority. Not putting Allen down here at all, just reviewing the facts of the situation.

As I said in the other thread about him, UK wouldn't let him publicly commit if Allen was going to have problems qualifying to transfer and be eligible for 2024.

Allen was a HS four star, 13th ranked QB nationally. As a 5th year senior if he doesn't turn out to be a serviceable backup I for one would be greatly disappointed.
If he doesn't get on the field, that point will be moot. Brock Vandagriff is being brought here to play. Allen will be a depth piece. I don't see how anyone doesn't see that.
