Ugo got hurt

It's an ankle injury in early July. No reason to push to get him on the court. He needs to be ready by October/Nov, not now. Get healthy/healed up. Will be interesting to see a Kentucky team playing without a true 5 man and having at least 2, possibly another big man (Somto is my guess) when the season gets started.
But he really needed these games to get ready.Zero time last season may come back to haunt us.

the fans want few 5's... but change your narrative how you with
Can you translate this to english?

I think you're trying to say that the fans want fewer centers (5's) and that I changed my narrative. If so, that’s a terrible take. Nobody said we should have fewer centers. In fact, all we have talked about is the need for more depth at the 5, in the form of at least one more athletic 7 footer, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

What HAS been said is we are done seeing 250 pounders that never leave the paint and do nothing but clog driving lanes, but whatever.

Even in scrimmages it’s weird Edwards isn’t starting but yeah I agree we are insane but that’s what makes our fanbase great
Heck, all we did was question why Edwards wasn't starting. All these Cal fans bragged about this recruiting class and they aaaaalllll have been saying Cal finally has his guys, well, why is he starting those guys?

Another one that thinks losses, injuries, poor coaching and hard headedness is no big deal.

Here’s another one for you @Son_Of_Saul .

We all get it's a scrimmage.

Not starting the best player is dumb though.

We should be preparing the best lineup for November now.

When Kansas beats our asses I'm sure there will be excuses then too.

Not addressing the above to u but other guy. Think we are on same page.

Disagree that missing 4 games in Canada in July is going to turn the season anyway. I've noticed Welch brings him up anytime someone asks who looks good and I trust his take. Welch isn't into bull****. If someone doesn't look good there's ways to answer a question without bringing them up negatively or with false praise. He praised the guy immediately. So has Calipari. So have teammates.

Then again, I saw enough from Ugo last year to be confident he'd be a better player this year and help the team with his rim protection and like his talent. Know many think he sucks because he once played a game in November against a veteran Gonzaga frontcourt who made him and rest of team look bad.

The last thing you do is play him banged up. This is July. Don't turn a little thing into a serious one.

can anybody explain why teams do not wear ankle braces? at least it appears no one has them on. when we played football, i know it is a different sport, we all had 'rocket socks' on. and when we played basketball we all had hi-tops on
may not prevent sprains but could sure lessen the severity
For real. We weren't allowed to play in anything that wasn't considered mid-high top.
If u wore low top you didn't get on the court. Any previous ankle sprains/injuries and you better be wearing some type of support brace or have it taped by a trainer.

But the roster is fine... we only need 7 deep - was one argument...

then we luck out with Mitchell and a couple of other VERY LATE additions - We ARE really great now - was the next argument...

Now - it's only July is the argument - when we have seen these situations milked into weeks, months, seasons.... of course with "Mystery" and vague updates and empty promises...

Cal on brand as usual... Drama

Exactly. The whole purpose of this trip is to get these young guys as much game experience as possible before the season starts.

There is always an excuse for every loss and every Cal blunder.

You know it's coming in November when Bradshaw and Ugo are behind and out of shape: "well, Bradshaw had the foot thing, so he couldn’t condition and Ugo missed those July games because he turned his ankle".

This team needed every single bit of experience they could get. These injuries are going to be costly.

Trouble is we only have 3 bigs on the whole roster with one already out injured. Also Travis Graf,Sisk and Pilgram have all said Ugo has struggled in practice and I believe them over coaches who have reason to be sunshine pumpers.

That’s exactly where I'm at with it. This team needs every minute of game experience they can get. We’re going to be the youngest team in the country, these guys needed this experience and now two of our most important front court guys are out. This is definitely not good.

I was pleasantly surprised with his touch and mid-range early on last season. He has a natural instinct for the timing to block shots. Wish he would have seen more spot minutes last season but that never happened once they got closer to conference play.
Many people seem to forget he was supposed to be in high school last yr so we should see improvement after an off season to train.

You guys are something else. Just downright comical the things you guys complain about.

You and @MdWIldcat55 are the best at this game.

Lose or have a guy go down with injury in a scrimmage?

"It was a scrimmage."

Lose in the Champion's Classic?

"It's early in the year."

Lose in December at home to an unranked team?

"We're not even in conference play yet. We're young. Give these guys time to come together."

Lose 6 to 8 games in the SEC?

"Enjoy the process. We're playing for March. We still have the SEC tournament and we don't have any true road games left."

Lose in the SEC Tournament?

"This tournament is meaningless anyway. The real tournament begins Thursday."

Lose in the NCAA Tournament?

"Well...you guys must have been miserable when we went from 1958 to 1996 with only one title in between those years."

Point out that six different programs have won multiple championships in the last 20 years and that winning multiple titles in a slim period of time is not just possible, but actually quite common amongst the elite programs?

"At least we aren't Indiana."
Nailed it!

I've talked with Graf and he's not nearly as down on Ugo as your portray and also have heard positive progress from friend when he was around team to watch them. Tried to say that Welch is not like the rest, but you want to lump him in with everyone else, that's your right. Welch is a good coach because he doesn't buy into the hype/BS. What reason does a guy who didn't need this job need to pump up a player who isn't very good? Why would he risk his reputation like that when he can simply be polite and not mention the guy when asked of players he's been impressed with? Get if you block anything Cal says due to years of hearing same things...but a new coach who has more than enough stripes on wall that this is a favor to Cal more than a necessity for him to have a job....I'll take Welch's opinion over KSR. Those jackasses had the Lemond take where he openly mocked the kid's name which is about as disgusting as it gets (Jones should address that since he's on a He's a Racist kick today regarding others and btw-I thought what Rand Paul said was stupid as well) and then took a stupid incident where guys were having fun at a Satellite camp as some true reality.

Injuries are one thing, a rolled ankle is going to happen. There's not much you can do to prevent it. As long as he's not seriously injured, then let him rest and move forward. Yet to see a UK trip overseas where someone in the frontcourt wasn't out--be it WCS in '14, Montgomery in '18, or Ware last year.

Not complaining about anything. I have 0 stress or expectations with UK basketball anymore. We have 0 shot at another title or another final four probably with calipari here anyways.

It's mindless entertainment for me and I'm bored during the summer.

Same here and I liked the minutes he had against Dickinson and Michigan over in London. Was he dominant? No, but he held his own and team did well in his time on the court-including a nice left handed putback.

Young big men come along differently but the traits they possess when being young often allow them to accelerate their growth/learning curve. Coaches can teach footwork/post moves, etc...but they can't teach defensive instinct and touch. Now add his size and how he runs the floor and he'll be a nice fit with this year's team.

Coaches aren't going to come out and talk about a player doing poorly unless they want him to transfer.Sorry not buying the Ugo hype.Every season some player is going to be amazing and it doesn't happen.

I just wanted to see him play and see how much he improved it’s not the end of the world for sure though

Don’t treat it the way Wheeler treated his “ankle injury” for crying out loud.

I think the issue is that ugo of all people can’t miss time. He needs all the work he can get. Now we will have to play cals injury game with him and Bradshaw, maybe he will shock us and get an extra body in this rumored late rad transfer window.

Perfect example why those of us asking for an additional big man be added. This is the reason…..right here. Now we’re down 2. Could be the same damn story when the regular season gets here. I’m not saying his ankle injury will linger that long. I‘m saying injuries and foul trouble happen.
