Oh boy, if that happened to us some UK fan would burn that refs house down. Kidding... kinda. What an atrocious call tho. We prolly still would've won but that call was horrific. I didn't even remeber that call, but if it had gone against us it would be talked about to this day.

Another thing I found interesting is that was the Sweet 16 game before the Duke game in the Elite 8 with the Laettner shot. That game was so close to not even happening.

Very surprised watching the game live when that happened.

it just shows that refs are anti Cal and that they can and do affect the outcome of games.

So true. We didn't notice it as much then because it benefited us. They've been doing that shat for a long time. Even one of the coaches (Calhoun?) commented what a terrible call it was and said something about wanting the Blue Blood to win there.

Well, that and the fact that there was no 24/7 media coverage back then or place to bitch about it and everything from that tournament was forgotten except for the Laettner shot.

I think Cal brought that call up way back when he was first introduced. I think Pitino had been complaining about coaching-box infractions all game, and it finally paid off at the end. Completely bogus call.

Cal was screaming at those refs the entire game. They got sick of it. He learned a lesson. Had zero to do with being the little guy vs. the "blueblood," hell, UK was still on the comeback from probation that year.

He was a VERY abrasive personality on the court in those days. Still shows flashes of it though he has calmed down a lot.

You do not call that for one foot out of the box ever, especially late in a 2 point game from the other end of the court. Reminded me of how Roger Ayers got Cal down at Tennessee.

Anyone remember the score at that moment? It seemed like it was a one possession game, it was so tight.

Too fortunate, and couldn't believe the call, and Pitino desperate for any break his way.

cal was 33 at the time

biggest thing the doc did was remind people just how young cal was when he made umass a national power, and first inspired the animosity that remains

I think Johnny Orr of Iowa State made an issue of coaches box inconsistencies in game against UK in the previous round. He felt Pitino getting away with it but Johnny got the T. I believe it was big topic of discussion in postgame coverage. May have played a role in ref's awareness of isue in that next game.

The call was made because the ref thought he was screaming at him. He was yelling at players. The coaching box explanation is Johnny Come Lately. It was a horrible call. It was a big deal then. Pitino talked about it.

We got paid back many times by stripes in next game.

At that time, a one possession game. They had beaten us the first game of the year as I recall in Springfield Mass. (Hall of Fame Game) After the unbelievable call UK pushed the lead out. I always thought Cal got screwed on that call.

This my best recollection!

That was the 95 game where they beat the 96 title team early on then lost to UK in the Final Four. The 92 team (I stand corrected) was pre Marcus Camby UMass vs Mashburn and the Unforgettables.

33 years old and he without a doubt COACHED up that program. They had what, one nba player , mabye 2 come out of his time there?

And Cal got hosed at Memphis too. "05 elite 8 UCLA shoots 39 FTs, next year Ohio St shot 41 FTs in the elite 8. Thats insane. Mean while Memphis shot 15 and 20 FTs.

Interesting as well that it was the second time that year we had played UMASS. We beat them at Rupp Arena during the pre-conference schedule.

Oh but some posters say there's no personal agenda or bias against Cal when it comes to officiating...they say it's simply a matter of incompetence. Lmao.
Most people say it is an anti UK agenda. Funny thing is, everyone remembers the ones that go against us, but no one remembers the ones that go for us. Like poker, everyone remembers the bad beats they lost, but not the ones they won. A part of our fan base loves playing the martyr. The announcers, the media in general, the NCAA, the officials, everyone is against us. This call shows that this is not always the case.

Remember the call well. Thought it was bogus. Loved it though. Cal was an a$$.

You know, that's what I always thought. Cal had been complaining about Pitino being out of the coaching box all the time...and he got Ted up

Did not remember that call...but that is one of the worst calls ever. And hump and shot clock and 1st half.
But yeah, refs don't have it for Cal.

Some of you may be right...we may not (be allowed) win another title while Cal is here.

Even if... I still want him at the helm.

How was he an ass? Serious question.

Anyone around UK knew (even then) RP was a huge ass...but a great coach; and our coach

Remember the jokes "you don't touch the coach"?

Not trying to be contrarian.
I truly remember my lucky hands... and learn from.

I'll give you $1,000 for every blatantly bad call Kentucky got in their favor.. and in return you owe me $10 for every blatantly bad call (or seeding) that went against Kentucky..

You don't want it..

Did they ever show the replay of the sequence when KU hit that 3 to make it a 4 point game? Because it sure as hell looks like that official ignored that kid's foot hitting the OOB line which led to the 3 that made it a 4 point game.

It was 2006 when Memphis played UCLA and they had to play them in Oakland. Unreal

They should just put up a half wall that is padded if they want to worry about coaches being out of it. They would be trapped behind it like in hockey and no one would have to worry about it.
