Can we just skip ahead a few hours in the news cycle where Cal says he’s called Mark to apologize? He wants to honor the rich decades-long history of the basketball program, but that doesn’t take away from all the recent success of the football program. Both program’s success doesn’t come at the expense of the other and it isn’t helpful to frame it that way yada yada.

If I was Stoops, I would not be very happy with this comment. You want to get yours, then go ahead, but don't disparage mine on your way.

I can't believe that Stoops is that worked over a comment that is obviously true. He wasn't disparaging football, just stating a fact. I'm a football first UK fan, but it's clear this is a basketball school as much as that sux
$$$$$$$$ NIL guarantees etc. Is there enough to go around to draw in the stud recruits to keep both programs at there present status level? Unfortunately, probably not. And though Congress is looking into the situation and regulation that could take years.

He didn't disparage UK football. I'd say with 8 national championships its not a blunder to call UK a basketball school.

You think it's a mess now. Wait until lifelong politicians who have been anti athletic their entire life start regulating.

Kentucky is in a unique situation more so than most colleges.
Though an historically tradition riched basketball program, a relatively poor state now is thriving in football thanks to Coach Stoops 10 yr rebuild and sparking fan interests, fans that have been a doormat to the SEC for 75 yrs. and are hungry for success. Fans that have loved football all along but have been beat down constantly.
Georgia is a football power, they dont care about basketball, not really. So most of the NIL is going to go to keep Georgia top Dawg in football.
Kentucky is at a crossroads. Be mediocre in both football and basketball or pump NIL into one or the other and contend, thus Cal’s comments.
This aint about a practice facility.

You are right, UGA has never been too concerned with BB. With this NIL deal. and a finite amount of money someone isn't going to be happy with how it is spent.

Stoops says he insulted UK fans. And ain't gonna back down an inch. Cal just pissed off a short permanently angry ass Youngstown boy. Cal has no idea the hurt heading his way. And no clue that a vague media apology tonight won't be nearly good enough.

I love KY sports in general. I get excited when my university (UK) competes and has success in any sport.
There sure is a lot of divisiveness from some folks, where it’s …almost like comparing one’s @ick size.
Chill.

If basketball is doing so well, it needs taken off the football teat

I grew up being a diehard cats basketball fan. Got to see them win 3 championships. But my attention has been on our football team, as I’ve gotten older. Football is king and we live in the best football conference in America. There’s no reason we can’t be both. The traditions and rivalries in SEC football are second to none. Maybe it’s because I’m more of a college football fan but even a 7-5 Kentucky team has my attention more than basketball. Especially over the last 5 years.

It's not just you, it's a trend. College basketball is slowly going away. When SEC basketball starts getting higher ratings and bringing in more money than MAC football, then we can talk.

Completely agree with you. Hard to be totally invested in basketball when we have to learn the whole starting lineup every year. The kids that play on the football team are invested into a certain “family” culture and play for the name on the front of the jerseys. A bunch of underdogs giving their all.

What’s funny about that Tennessee AD saying they are a everything school, is they haven’t won shit in forever and there basketball program is Jekyll and Hyde, and the football program constantly disappoints, but yes they are a everything school. For Kentucky both sports matter and Mitch needs to reiterate that
Agreed, but other schools are going to POUNCE on Cal's comments to recruit against UK. That's why his comments are REALLY CRAPPY and SOOOOOO Narcissistic. Cal needs to come out and apologize or make it right with Stoops NOW!!!!

To me the timing was absolutely terrible, football starts in 3 weeks and basketball is getting some run in now, don’t undercut one area to make yours better, he shouldn’t have said both programs need updates. Wouldn’t surprise me if tommrrow morning cal has a tweet that says he and stoop talked and cleared everything

Pretty much. NCAA basketball is the least casual friendly sport of the major ones. I mean just about everyone watches football. And baseball has the appeal that tons of people who don't even watch the sport still attend games. You dont even have to follow the team.

Basketball (especially college) hasn't had that in 25 years.

The respective history of the programs isn't news, but you could certainly make the case that Kentucky's football success recently, and in particular this past season, is comparative much better than basketball's. So should Stoops make a statement that football is having more recent success that basketball? No because it would be rude and damaging to the basketball program. There's some things you don't say out of respect.

IMO Cal is feeling the heat, football is gaining in popularity and fan support and that attracts boaster money and NIL money that he may think he is entitled to. He's making, a pitch but his pitch is shallow.

I agree with your post. While I don't think Cal meant to disparage the football program, he did, and the head of our football program is a spit fire that wont take disparagement. I assume there will be a public "make up" within the next few days, but one thing we've learned is that we have the football coach we want. He doesn't take shit from anyone, including the highest paid employee of the Commonwealth.

Right before the UGA game Stoops needs to walk in the locker room a yell this is a Basketball School over and over ! What kind of response do you think he will get ?

Really disappointing, but not surprising public comments by Cal. Completely uncalled for.

If you want to politic for your basketball program and funds for new facilities, by all means. Do that by propping up the historical significance of your program vs your peers — other college basketball programs. We are a blue blood in college basketball, make the argument on the merits of your own program because you have all the ammo in the world there.

But don’t do it by trying to put the rising football program in its place, publicly. I’d be absolutely livid if I were Mark Stoops. I’m livid as a fan that wants Mark Stoops to get all the resources he can to continue building on the success he’s had here, which is unprecedented in my lifetime.
