State of 2023 Recruiting

Jakob Dixon has now committed to UK. That makes 11. UK's coaches would still like to have Devin Hyatt and Anthony Brown in the receiver room.

UK's current 2023 recruiting class-

Ty Bryant, DB, Lexington, KY
Koby Keenum, OL, Florence, AL
Khalife Keith, RB, Birmingham, AL
Tanner Lemaster, TE, Washington CH, OH
Kaden Moorman, RB, Frankfort, KY
Shamar Porter, WR, Nashville, TN
Austin Ramsey, OL, Philadelphia, PA
Avery Stuart, DB, Montgomery, AL
Malachi Wood, OL, Richmond, KY
Tommy Ziesmer, LB, Danville, KY

It is likely that Jakob Dixon will commit to UK later today. Dixon is a tall WR out of PRP hs in southwest Jefferson County, same school that produced Elijah Reed last year. Dixon participated in two recent camps in Lexington and received his offer from our coaches after running 4.5 there. Conventional wisdom says he runs solid routes and has dependable hands. For those worried about his player ranking, our coaching staff's evaluation has been proven more reliable (Josh Allen, Benny Snell, Bunchy Stallings, Chris Rodriguez, Eli Cox). Conventional wisdom is that Dixon is being recruited as an H back/flex receiver. His eventual role depends on how his physique develops in UK's gym.

Here is a partial list of some other uncommitted 2023 players who might be considering UK seriously.

Nasir Addison, WR, Irvington, NJ
Jaremiah Anglin, DB, Lake Wales, FL
Neeo Avery, LB, Olney, MD
Naquil Betrand, OL, Philadelphia, PA
Anthony Brown, slotR, Springfield, OH
Stanquan Clark, LB, Miami, FL
Jeremiah Collins, DB, Louisville, KY
Kendrick Gilbert, DE, Indianapolis, IN
Grant Godfrey, LB, Suwanee, GA
Dylan Gooden, LB, Olney, MD
Devin Hyatt, WR, Bradenton, FL
Ja'Keem Jackson, DB, Kissimmee, FL
Conner Knight, OL, Trussville, AL
Che Ojarikre, ATH, Alpharetta, GA
Curley Reed, DB, Lake Charles, LA
Arvell Reese, LB, Cleveland, OH
William Spencer, OL, Louisville, KY

I am not suggesting all of these offers are committable. I do not expect Betrand, Gilbert, Gooden, Jackson, Knight, Reed, or Reese to end up at UK. In particular, I do not believe the delay in Gilbert's announcement is good news for us. But they are all uncommitted, and UK still has a chance.

I am cautiously optimistic with Jaremiah Anglin, Neeo Avery, Anthony Brown, Jeremiah Collins, Grant Godfrey, Devin Hyatt, and William Spencer. We won't sign all of them, but we will get some of them. With Spencer, it could just be a matter of him improving his grades this fall. Maybe that helps to explain a reason why he is transferring to a hs in southern IN.

More importantly, the recent storm of manufactured indignation from some fans over our 2023 recruiting class is, to be kind about it, premature. The signing date is in December, five months away. It is in the nature of college athletics that rules change over time. Let's be perfectly clear. There is no evidence whatsoever that any of us understands the NIL rule better than UK's athletics department does. In fact, particulars of the NIL rule are stated inaccurately in posts on this website fairly often. There is no evidence that our AD is tying the hands of our coaching staff. In fact, Vince Marrow recently tweeted exactly the opposite, while praising Barnhart as an asset. If Marrow did not believe this, he didn't have to say anything. There is no evidence that Stoops is unhappy with Barnhart. In fact, Stoops has repeatedly stated that the UK head coaching job is a great situation for him. He is prospering in Lexington. He has had opportunities to leave, and many fans continue to predict he will. But Stoops is still here. And there is no evidence that our athletic department's oversight is hurting our football program. In fact, UK has won four straight bowl games and recently signed our best class ever. Avery Stuart's commitment last week proves that Stoops is still attracting top talent.

Despite losing Steve Clinkscale, Jon Sumrall, and Liam Coen, Stoops and his staff have actually expanded their recruiting territory back into FL, TX and most of the eastern seaboard. They are competing with the cream of the SEC for elite players. That takes time. Yesterday's commitment from Koby Keenum proves that Zach Yenser is already getting the knack for SEC recruiting. Mike Stoops has not yet made a recruiting impact, but that is coming. He just got here.

I anticipate another excellent class.
1. You’re work on recruiting is outstanding!
2. It’s hard to argue this is shaping up to be an excellent class….if this pans even as your guessing it might…this would be our 2nd lowest star rating in Stoops era We almost have to get a Qb and we’re not sniffing a prospect. I’m sure we’ll head to portal for one…but this shows our high school recruiting just ain’t happening
3. Stoops own words with Matt Jones interview last week was per his own words…not where we want NIL to be. And he’s basically having to nearly beg for company to fund future recruiting classes sounded very off to me. Not able to specifically state who you could contact to inquiring for funding was not a great look as well

We need to see how to adjust to the new rules. But to have your head coach out there flailing on radio while th e AD is stone lipped isn’t a good look to me. The administration needs to take this burden off the coach IMO

I wonder if it has to do with the fact that we offer almost zero early playing time. Outside of Wallace who has really played much their 1st years and injuries helped him there. We have older players that are set almost every position and even our top 100 recruits, Rogers, Wallace, Burton, etc aren't strating till year 3. Of course Valentine was like #900 and came in playing and started as a Soph, but isn't happening much
Alabama doesn’t seem to have issues stacking talent.

Take Spencers commitment. If he doesn't get qualified then he won't enroll next yr. Not like he would take a slot from someone else. That stuff don't matter in the age of the portal.

Zero. Look at the top 10 as it stands right now. Tell me which ones have the 4 and 5 * kids because playing time is available.
There really is no comparison there. Comparing UK to Bama as the other poster did, or say OSU, UGA, ND, etc is isn't realistic when they're in the CFP and title picture most years. They also and should with the guys they get produce a lot more NFL guys and def 1st Rd picks. Yet they have freshman that get a lot of PT, again you can't compare because they're generally a lot higher ranked prospects. OSU had a starting RB and CB true Freshman, ND starting LT, UGA starting TE, A&M starting RT. I think those were all 4 stars and Joe Alt ND a 3 star. Again you can't compare what UK has/is doing to any of those, since the situations aren't the same nor are the players in most instances. PT may not be a factor as you said but your comparisons though skewed are wrong

If 2 or 3 high end kids can go into OSU, following your example, and start as true freshman, that tells me one of 2 things:

1) injuries decimated a position (the CB benefit from this)
2) the is a mega talent (the RB Henderson)

Your initial post was about offering playing time. It wasn't about the football factories and making the playoffs. If you want to say, "we aren't getting top 250 type kids because we aren't in the CCG and playoffs", sure, say that.

Again I asked if that was that a part of problem. You and another poster brought Bama and top 10 a teams. Most of the guys we have missed against are to UT, UC, type teams, not Bama and OSU. For alot of those guys UC and UT has a lot faster track to playing. I only brought up the teams I did because you said look at the top 10 and there is no comparing UK to most top 10 schools

Absolutely. Playing time is a factor at UK. It's not at Bama. You don't go to Bama for immediate PT, though ideally you'd love to get it. You go to another school besides Bama where you can get PT if you think you may sit too long at Bama and not play.

If you know you're gonna be a pro prospect, but know you need to develop physically, you go where you may sit a year or so, but where you know you can enjoy your time while you develop yourself (because they dont develop you). If you have dreams of being a pro prospect, want to play against the best in the country, and where you WILL be developed, you go to a school that has proven they WILL develop players instead of banking simply on their talent level out of HS. UK is that school.

QB Chris Parson just decommitted from FSU. He’s a 3 star on here but a 4 star on some other sites. We had him on campus before his FSU commitment. He’s already gotten a handful of predictions to MS State but maybe we can get back in it with him. I’m of the opinion we can’t rely on the transfer portal for QBs indefinitely.

think i read the coaches told Wade he would be the only Qb in 23'

Yeah no way in hell we promise a '22 recruit we won't sign a qb in '23. Esp with the '22 starter is in his last season.

Ja'Keem Jackson, whose brother just transfered to UK for Track and Field posted this today.

He sits around #250 nationally in both the 247 and On3 composites and is a 4* per every service. Would be an amazing pair with Avery Stuart.

Jackson listed as an athlete. Only film I've found so far is as an outside WR, apparently UK sees him as a DB. Eight SEC offers.

Our upgrades at the receiver positions are going great. Kind of surprising we haven't recently attracted a high ranked recruit out of high school. The rep we have on the OL, a great QB could come here and be very successful.

Saw Parson play twice last season when going to Summit games. Pretty neat watching him and the twins on the same field. First game in reg season was de facto district championship and was a very entertaining track meet the first half with Summit going up a score and Parson answering. Late in the half Parson was accelerating with a lane and I was thinking man that kid is fast when Keaten came from nowhere and obliterated him into the sideline from the OPPOSITE side of the field. Keat got him again on the following 4th and short and Destin got a quick score. Got out of hand in the second half but Parson definitely a player.

UK's current 2023 recruiting class-

Anthony Brown, slotR, Springfield, OH
Ty Bryant, DB, Lexington, KY
Jakob Dixon, WR, Louisville, KY
Koby Keenum, OL, Florence, AL
Khalifa Keith, RB, Birmingham, AL
Tanner Lemaster, TE, Washington CH, OH
Kaden Moorman, RB, Frankfort, KY

Tommy Ziesmer, LB, Danville, KY

As expected, Anthony Brown committed to UK this afternoon. Brown is being recruited by Coach Marrow. Along with Tanner Lemaster, Brown is UK's second commitment in this class from the state of OH. Brown's hs coach in Springfield, Mo Douglass, is a former star CB at UK. Brown holds at least three SEC offers plus other offers from many schools including OK, MI, and Cincinnati. Brown isn't very big, but he is bigger than some of UK's other slot receivers and his speed is elite.

We continue to see alarmist posts from people criticizing UK's class. But as some of us have emphasized here before, Coach Stoops is winning lots of football games at UK, and there is no reason to think that is about to slow down. Is Mitch Barnhart hurting recruiting, either by limiting NIL or by distancing himself from Stoops? No less an authority on recruiting than recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow says those narratives are false. In recent tweets, Marrow has said Barnhart is nothing but an asset to recruiting. Is NIL a problem? Not according to Marrow. I figure Marrow knows what he is talking about. And if Marrow didn't feel Barnhart was an asset, he just could have remained quiet about it. Since Stoops has many times expressed his happiness with the UK coaching job, since he has turned down feelers from other schools about other coaching jobs, and since Barnhart takes care of every concern expressed by Stoops, I would conclude Stoops and Barnhart are getting along fine.

Is it of any importance that UL's recruiting class "outranks" UK's class on July 16? None whatsoever. Every year, UK beats the snot out of UL on the football field. Who is to say UL won't have decommitments? Who can say which uncommitted players will commit to UK between now and February? Who is to say which UK commits are underrated? What did we learn when Benny Snell, Bunchy Stallings, Logan Stenberg, and Josh Allen became All Americans at UK? All of them were lightly recruited. So, what we should have learned is that Stoops and his staff are better at evaluating and developing talent than most other coaching staffs, and are certainly better at evaluating talent than internet commenters. Stoops has earned our trust. So let's learn the lesson and wait until the class signs to form opinions.

Of UK's 12 current commitments, 9 are offensive players. We can expect a run of defensive commitments to begin before the end of the summer.

It seldom goes mentioned, but we have knocked a lot of passes down, with guys like Calvin Taylor (6’ 9”) and Jordan Wright (6’ 5”).

Stoops talks length, and lives to recruit it on defense.
Yes, that size makes some difference. We match up well with SEC teams size wise. And sometimes even bigger. Little by little we have gotten bigger and bigger and faster and faster. Anthony Brown's addition helps make us one of our fastest teams in terms of numbers.

For now, here are some uncommitted prospects reportedly with UK offers that we can keep an eye on. I always have to include the following disclaimer so certain people won't discover a reason to go negative and blow up the thread. I am not suggesting all these offers are currently committable. Only our coaches know which offers are committable. I am not suggesting that I know where these prospects will decide to sign, although I fully expect several of them will end up at UK eventually.

Nasir Addison, WR, Irvington, NJ
Jaremiah Anglin, DB, Lake Wales, FL
Neeo Avery, LB, Olney, MD
Naquil Betrand, OL, Philadelphia, PA
Stanquan Clark, LB, Miami, FL
Jeremiah Collins, DB, Louisville, KY
Grant Godfrey, LB, Suwanee, GA
Dylan Gooden, LB, Olney, MD
Devin Hyatt, WR, Bradenton, FL
Ja'Keem Jackson, DB, Kissimmee, FL
Che Okarikre, ATH, Alpharetta, GA
Chris Parson, QB, Brentwood, TN
Adarius Redmond, WR, Powell, TN
Arvell Reese, LB, Cleveland, OH
William Spencer, OL, Louisville, KY

UK currently has 12 commitments for the 2023 class. There is no way for us to know how many undergrads will leave the program this year and open up more scholarships. But assuming that Stoops plans to hold back a handful of scholarships for future inbound transfers, this class is probably more than halfway full now. That means Stoops can be picky with the remaining scholarships. Jackson has become an interesting item due to recent news that his brother just transferred into UK's track and field program. Maybe that is significant, maybe not. I would keep an eye on Avery, Godfrey, and Hyatt, because they visited Lexington in June and appear to be considering UK as a finalist. Betrand and Clark also visited in June, although I cannot speculate with quite as much confidence whether they may be gravitating toward UK. Addison recently decommitted from MD, and there is some noise that he might end up at UK. IDK.

Stoops already has nine offensive commitments. Before the summer ends, I expect significant defensive commitments to be added to the class. It would be good if a couple of impressive defensive linemen pop up on Stoops' recruiting radar soon.

The Athletic recruiting podcast talked about Parson, 1 of the hosts watched him at the Elite 11 practices. Said he had an incredible accurate arm.

But

Host said he himself is 5'11, and looking Parsons eye to eye he was taller.

Sounds like Miss St is in strong position..... but height like that he is a big pass for me anyway at QB, with our tall O linemen and pro style system.

Word on Betrand is that aTm asked him to wait till fall for his visit. He set a commitment date instead. A few weeks ago it appeared AU may be ahead He seems to like Syracuse even said it was his dream school growing up. The announcement was supposedly a surprise but UK feels like they're in the lead here
