State of 2022 Recruiting

What Stoops has accomplished here is AMAZING.
The issue with UK football in the SEC has ALWAYS been talent level.
You can only scheme so much, if the speed quickness and strength isnt there, scheme does not matter.
If your players are physically inferior in the SEC you aren't going to win.

We have an SEC caliber roster. We'll never be Bama or LSU etc, but we have the studs to compete.

Stoops should be worshipped for nothing else than what he's done with the talent on the roster.

I am not sure we can get all three. But we don't necessarily have to. We really need Brown, and I am still optimistic about him.

It would be fantastic to sign Deone Walker, especially if it means Coach Wolford steers him away from Clinkscale at MI. Walker is a natural NT, but could also be a monster OT.

On September 6, OH St insider Bill Kurelic posted a UK crystal ball pick for Wagner. At the time, I figured that might be the last shoe to drop since Kurelic usually knows these things. But there has been very little news about Wagner in October, other than his visits to PA St and ND which were described as excellent. The final visit often has greater value. I think we might lose Wagner, but that is just a gut feeling. Coach Marrow is a good finisher, so he might get it done yet. Whether or not we sign him, I am confident either way that this will be an excellent OL class for us. Grant Bingham is a very nice prospect, Nik Hall is way underrated compared to his offer sheet and pedigree, and I still think UK will sign Goodwin.

Coach Wolford is still recruiting a couple interesting uncommitted players, and it's even possible (although I wouldn't get my hopes up) Coach Marrow could pull Tshabola away from OH St. There is a rumor about Walker Parks maybe transferring to UK. I don't expect Tshabola or Parks, but it would not be a huge shock. There are still a lot of possibilities from uncommitted hs players and college players in the transfer portal. This staff knows how to recruit.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. This is a day to be thankful, and UK fans have a lot to be thankful for. Good health and happiness to everyone in the year ahead.

Let's continue to keep this thread strictly focused on UK's 2022 recruiting class. Let's encourage substantive posting about UK football recruiting.

On October 30, I offered the logical case (above) why UK's coaches had fallen into a disadvantaged position with Aamil Wagner's recruitment. Although others disagreed with what I said at the time and expressed confidence that UK would get a commitment from Wagner, I had lost confidence that it would happen. It was just a guess on my part, based on Wagner's campus visit to ND and the lack of recent news involving Wagner and UK. But it didn't feel right. Subsequently, Wagner committed to ND and I think he will stick with that. I doubt this development took UK's coaches by surprise. They had to know.

But I also think UK will sign a strong OL class anyway, provided that Coach Marrow can hang onto Kiyaunta Goodwin. I admit, I have become a little concerned about Goodwin. It isn't that Goodwin keeps taking more visits. Lots of prospects do that after committing. It's more about where he has been visiting and what he has been saying. Coach Marrow is a good finisher. If I have to guess, I still lean toward believing Marrow will get the job done and close the deal with Goodwin. But let's be honest, I don't think Goodwin's mind is totally made up yet. We could lose him, and that would be a problem. Right now, Goodwin has the inside track to the starting LT job in 2022 as long as Dare Rosenthal jumps to the NFL draft. So let's hope Goodwin sticks with his UK commitment. I still think he will, but it isn't with high confidence anymore because it is still an unfolding story.

There is also a risk that UK could still lose DeCarlos Nicholson to Ole Miss. Nicholson has officially visited Oxford subsequent to giving UK his commitment. He is from Perkinston, MS. Ole Miss continues to push for his interest. Since Nicholson has an inside track for a starting CB job at UK in 2022, Coach Collins will try hard to hang onto him. Collins does not yet have a track record as an SEC recruiter, so this is a test for him. Stoops' recent acceptance of Elijah Reed's commitment, coming after Reed was said to be ready to commit since June, makes you wonder.

Recently, UK received a couple more 2022 commitments. Here is our current 2022 class-

Alex Afari, DB, West Chester, OH
Jordan Anthony, slotR, Tylertown, MS
Grant Bingham, OL, Paintsville, KY
Barion Brown, ATH, Nashville, TN
Tomiwa Durojaiye, DL, Middletown, DE
Tyreese Fearbry, LB, Pittsburgh, PA
Kiyaunta Goodwin, OL, Charlestown, IN
Nikolas Hall, OL, Austin, TX
Josh Kattus, TE, Cincinnati, OH
Dane Key, WR, Lexington, KY
Treyveon Longmire, ATH, Corbin, KY
DeCarlos Nicholson, DB, Perkinston, MS
Elijah Reed, DB, Louisville, KY
Jackson Smith, K, Danville, KY
Andre Stewart, DB, Kennesaw, GA
Destin Wade, ATH, Spring Hill, TN
Keaton Wade, LB, Spring Hill, TN
Brandon White, slotR, Cincinnati, OH

I believe UK will sign at least 25 in this class, since we are allowed to replace our super seniors this year. There will also be incoming and outgoing transfers, and UK has already accepted WR Taj Harris as a transfer from Syracuse. Here are some uncommitted prospects with UK offers who are still reportedly interested in UK. This is not intended to be a complete list, and do not claim that these offers are currently committable. Only our coaches know that for sure.

BJ Blake, DB/WR, Hyattsville, MD
Quinton Conley, WR, Kansas City, MO
Noah Demeritt, OL, Kingsland, GA
Cory Hendrix, OL, College Station, TX
Jason Jones, LB, Kingsland, GA
James Kyle, TE, Wilmette, IL
Alex McCalop, LB, Greensboro, NC
Kawaun Northington, ATH, Louisville, KY
Dominique Orange, DL, Kansas City, MO
Andrew Savaiinaea, DL, Graham, WA
Demetrius Walker, DL, Muskegon, MI
Deone Walker, OL/DL, Detroit, MI
Elijah Zollicoller, OL/DL, Covington, GA

Conley in is under 200 lbs. From what I have read UK quit recruiting him. I don't know if it size, speed, or something else but they apparently backed off
I wonder if UK's coaches may have all the receivers they need for now. Looks kind of like they might.

2022 seniors

Brenden Bates, TE
Rahsaan Lewis, slot
Wandale Robinson, slot (if he returns)
Clevan Thomas, slot (if he returns)

Juniors

Tae Tae Crumes, wideout
Izayah Cummings, TE
DeMarcus Harris, wideout
Taj Harris, wideout
Tre'von Morgan, wideout

Sophomores

Chauncey Magwood, slot
Ernest Sanders, wideout

Freshmen

Jordan Anthony, slot
Barion Brown, wideout
Dekel Crowdus, slot
Jordan Dingle, TE
Josh Kattus, TE
Dane Key, wideout
Christian Lewis, wideout
Treyveon Longmire, wideout
Brandon White, slot

Barion Brown and Taj Harris look like probable 2022 starters. Chauncey Magwood, Chris Lewis, Tae Tae Crumes, and Ernest Sanders have a lot of upside. Many people are assuming Wandale will leave, but that depends on the feedback he receives and I don't think it is a slam dunk yet. I could see the coaches maybe taking one more wideout in this class if they could get another impact athlete. But that is exactly what they just got in Barion Brown, and I am not aware of another uncommitted receiver with a UK offer capable of making a quick impact in 2022. As far as I know, there isn't an uncommitted juco fitting that description. Maybe another incoming WR transfer, if Wandale bolts?

Go with a WR in the transfer portal to go along with Harris ? What’s your take on transfers on the defensive side?

Always appreciate ur insight in these posts!

personally, I think UK has got to bring in more dline depth and game changers. There does not appear to be a replacement for paschal. Sounds like McCall may test the nfl waters—-after I thought he may give it another year at UK. Ox will be coming off of an injury. It appeared to me that UKs season changed course once UKs dline depth became strained. Few heir apparent guys out there n my opinion. To me, this has to be a major area of focus for the staff going fwd.

would feel much better if UK could get walker on board—-although I think he will need a redshirt year to transform his body some. Not sure I wouldn’t take a flyer on zollicoffer. A guy that size could be serviceable after a couple years n the weight room. Additionally,I think UK is gonna have to take a starter-ready dline transfer—-at least one. Two if possible.

who is Wagner’s oline replacement as a recruit? Do we know of anyone? What’s the story with the Steelers coaches son?

Saw where Bobo was not returning to Auburn. Wonder if his son will open recruiting back up ?

I don't think you really want to put him on scholarship. Bobo is close with Kirby and Muschamp, I am expecting Bobo to be hired as an analysis at UG if he doesn't get a new OC job soon. I just don't think his son is a P5 OL. Hope we don't do him a favor.

He's not day one starter but the kid is a power five player. Will take him two three years to be ready if he wants to play in the SEC but a place like Kentucky where we have to develop kids, he would be worth a spot I believe. Now he doesn't have a chance at Georgia or Bama probably with all those top ranked 5 stars every year but he can eventually play for us if he works hard and puts in his time. We have to take a little different route than you big boys Grump. lol Go Cats

I just don't believe he has the frame to carry the weight he needs for a P5 OL. Of course he could gain it but keeping agility and Quickness are important too. But good for him if he can sign with a P5 school. Muschanp's son is a walking QB at UGA. Heck our starting QB was a walk on.

No doubt it will be a lot of hard work for him to play someday, but if Stoops and this staff thinks they can work with him I'm all for it. They seem to have liked him from what i could tell. Also, Give me a walk on Bennett any day. Ha. That young man is what collage sports is all about. Just never know who'll take advantage of it and really work hard. I have to admit I'm a big fan of Stetson for the way he's stuck with it and made the most of his opportunities. I think that's why we love our program as much as we do, kids like Josh Allen, Benny and a lot more who just went to work and made it happen. I do believe Bobo could be a kid who, in the right system can work hard, gain the muscle and be a really good player someday. Who Knows though? Thanks Grumpy. I'll be pulling for you guys this year, just know, we're on our way to take it from you so you better enjoy it all you can.. haha. Go Cats

Gentlemen, allow me to say this: The fact we are even discussing potential 3-5-star recruits with so much enthusiasm demonstrates how far this Kentucky football program has come. Wow! Future looks brighter every day.

Go Cats!
I just want to add, Yes Sir I'm very excited about those big three there, but Wow, I have to say I'm just as exciting about the entire class. From or #1 ranked Kicker to the twins, I don't believe I've ever saw this much talent in one class. Also, already getting, in my book the next SEC superstar WR in Taj Harris, to Possibly getting Walker on the 15th, just wow. What had to be even more important is keeping the main man Coach Stoops on the Recruiting trail and putting the hammer down. Honestly, I don't have words for how impressed I am right now. The program is turning into a true contender and the future is looking unbelievable. I believe we'll do even better than last year in the portal and find some stars on defense as well. Hopefully we can lock down Nicholson and get Bogle on board, if so, it's going to be a heck of a year next season, maybe even a surprise extra season from a great player or two blesses the Cats. lol Get on the Train People. Go Cats

I'm not sure what Smashcat's image is, but I assume it has something to do with Treveyon Longmire de-committing.

Why aren't Kaden Moorman and T Longmire listed by Rivals with our commitments? Have they recommitted?

There are two categories of recruiting news this week. First is the decommitment of Treyveon Longmire. I have seen some people attempt to minimize this loss. It's true that UK's recruiting class did not fall very far in the team recruiting rankings. But rankings don't win games. Players do. Recruiting is about fitting athletes with roster needs and then developing players who can perform. Several sources have speculated that Longmire sees himself as a receiver at the next level while UK's coaching staff might view him more as a DB. They may have promised Longmire that he could try both positions. But the recent commitments of Dane Key and Barion Brown as well as the incoming transfer of Taj Harris may have discouraged Longmire. Maybe. Who really knows? My guess is that Longmire may be headed to Cincinnati now, and the headlines of playoff contention may have enticed the kid. The problem with this is that Luke Fickell is one of the hottest coaching commodities in the country right now, and I doubt it will be very long before he and his staff are living and coaching someplace else.

Anyway, Longmire is a significant loss for our class, but not disastrous. For his sake and ours, I wish he had stayed put.

Which brings us to fresh recruiting news. The following UK players are now in the transfer portal-

Jared Casey
Jake Pope
Nick Scalzo
Travis Tisdale
Nassir Watkins

By my count, this means 58 scholarship players (including Taj Harris) are expected back in 2022. If Jacquez Jones, Jordan Wright, and-or Deandre Square exercise their right to return in 2022 under the COVID supersenior rule, that number would increase to 59, 60, or 61. Of those, we can assume Dare Rosenthal, Wandale Robinson, and Chris Rodriguez are considering an early jump to the NFL draft. I feel CRod really needs to come back because of the impact of all the fumbles on his draft status. But the other two could go, which would reduce the final number of returning players accordingly.

Stoops currently has 17 players committed to his class, plus incoming transfer Taj Harris. This year, programs are allowed to replace outgoing superseniors even if that takes their rosters over the standard 85 scholarship limit. So Stoops can take a combination of at least 6-7 more commitments and incoming transfers, more than that if he wants. Basically, this is an opportunity for Stoops to shore up every position of need on his roster.

The headwind, though, is the loss of co-DC Jon Sumrall, who just accepted the HC job at Troy. Sumrall is one of UK's two most productive recruiters, and this is a tough week to lose him coming right before the signing date. For this reason and others, I think Stoops is about to accept a series of incoming transfers. More on that in a moment.

But there has been other fresh news on the recruiting front. Committed players Ja'Kobi Albert (Auburn) and Mason Thomas (IA St) are taking a new look at UK and may visit Lexington in the next week. There has also been some new speculation about committed players Drew Bobo (Auburn), Aamil Wagner (ND), and Tegra Tshabola (OH St) although premature IMO in all three of those cases.

Here is a new list of uncommitted hs players with UK scholarship offers and indications of current interest-

BJ Blake, DB, Hyattsville, MD
Davison Igbinosun, DB, Union, NJ
Quentel Jones, DL, Ft Valley, GA
Jalen Klemm, OL, Gibsonia, PA
Ahmad Moten, DL, Ft Lauderdale, FL
Jawaun Northington, ATH, Louisville, KY
Andrew Savaiinaea, DL, Graham, WA
Deone Walker, OL/DL, Detroit, MI

I don't typically cover transfers on this recruiting thread. But since we are counting scholarships at this point, here is a list of more possible transfers who could pop onto UK's radar soon or already have. None of these lists is intended to be all-inclusive, and we have no real idea where most of them are headed yet.

Khris Bogle (FL)
Jackson Bratten (AL)
MJ Griffin (Temple)
Enzo Jennings (PA St)
Frank Ladson (Clemson)
Walker Parks (Clemson)
Eli Ricks (LSU)
Tayvion Robinson (VA Rech)
Craig Young (OH St)

UK appears to have the inside track for Bogle, who would be a Jack or Sam LB in Stoops' 3-4. I expect more players in the transfer portal to look into UK this month.

As far as we can tell now, DeCarlos Nicholson appears to he the only juco player currently being recruited by UK's staff.

Thank you, @Rembrandt90

The loss of Sumrall has me a little down. Didn't like the news about Longmire either. Hopefully there's a bunch of good news in the next few weeks to make me feel better.

Any word on a great LB coach/recruiter to replace Coach Sumrall?

Craig Young (OH St)

UK appears to have the inside track for Bogle, who would be a Jack or Sam LB in Stoops' 3-4. I expect more players in the transfer portal to look into UK this month.

As far as we can tell now, DeCarlos Nicholson appears to he the only juco player currently being recruited by UK's staff.
Amazing overview!!!

1. UK has to upgrade the SAM and Jack LBer spots. I think Bogle is an easy spot and I think we go for Craig Young if Jordan Watson were to leave.
2. I'd love to walk out of this class with 2 more DL...UK is all in Deone Walker...is it reasoanble to think we can get Quentel Jones as well?
3. We all see the need for CB specifically...i thought we'd lose Nicholson to Ole Miss but we're still holding on to him. Does he look like a stick with UK? And is Davison Igbinosun a viable pick for uK?
