I also thought having Mercer on that '96 team was not "essential."

Right up until the moment he scored 20 points in the national championship game.

Sometimes it's good to have nonessentials if it means they might be the best player on the court in the long run.
Yikes..digging up over 25 years ago to "prove" a point.

The only scenario I think that's worse than this was James Wisemans stay in Memphis.

Not really.

In fairness to my point, we haven't had many situations where a veteran team was enhanced by a nonessential elite freshman (like Mercer).

Sharpe's situation is at least comparable from a projection level, and probably more so than most of our teams since 1996.

I could see that.

We’re just going to have to wait and see. I’m like some others. Not a thing we can do about it atm. Let’s enjoy the guys who are playing right now.
True! We’ve got a good group right now playing good basketball.
This may be the bourbon 🥃 talking. But at the moment I’m ready to roll with it.

So you're saying he uses all the available resources to recruit the best players he can. Good for him. It's delusional to not recruit or take a kid like Sharpe even if he goes to the draft. Worth the shot.
Again, no it isn't. There is no way he doesn't go to the draft being projected that high, not to mention signing him had to have kept other elite SG/SF from coming here.

Aren't you a Florida fan?

I can't see how any UK fan could have this outlook. If the #1 player plays, meh. If he leaves, meh.

Not sure where you got that from what I said. I said if he plays that's great.

Obviously I want him to play.

But I don't have a say in whether he plays or doesn't. It is what it is.

I also don't think he should be able to decide not to play if he accepted a scholly to play. This is on Cal for allowing that decision if it's true.

I'm actually pretty bummed out about this.

I thought if he played this season we went from very good to great. It's disappointing. Just because he seems like that marquee player we haven't been getting in recent years.

If we're already so good we don't need him to play for this team this year, then there you go. I'm rolling with it.

If he earns his game time on the floor in practice and can prove to the guys he gets some of their minutes RIGHT NOW, then it will HAVE to help the team.

So I am great with that.

either way, if he plays, I am good with it, or not. We have an extremely good and talented team. If our eight are so good he cant get any minutes, then we're better than I thought.

Let him lace them up in practice, go at it, see if he can steal someone's minutes out there.

That's not fair. He's probably been the most level-headed poster we've had here. Schooled a ton of people on how the selection committee works.

Remember, nothing has happened yet, and as much as I am annoyed by this news.. I still have to remember that technically nothing has changed, and we still don't know what involvement Cal had in this. Not every poster here is ready to throw Cal to the wolves just yet.

It's very possible that Sharpe and his camp had this planned from day 1.

I was wondering about that as well.

He was given a scholarship to play basketball. It should be up to Cal whether he plays or they should pull the scholarship. Tho I doubt Cal would ever do that.

I knew this would get everyone up in arms, but 21 pages already lol.
Bruce Pearl is loving it! Guarantee that slime ball had it leaked somehow. What’s the chances of this being made public before we play in their house?

All of you who think he’ll be back if he’s top five in the draft need to lookup Dajuan Wagner. See how Cal handled that. It’s not happening.
Funny how you want to sell “coach speak” when it comes to a lot of things, but not in this scenario.

I got him confused with @TheAnonymous13 .

Hence the apology.

It's a little ridiculous to think he's at least not as good as or even better than Wheeler. His size alone is a bonus. He is a finisher. His passing, I'm not so sure of yet. Going on with the what if is cheating our team of being even better.

As an IU fan first (my apologies and shame) I do root for regional teams (like UK) over anybody from elsewhere. That is my caveat. That stated, I would love to see him play to see how he does against good competition away from AAU. But I think he would be a fool to suit up or stay another year if he would be a top five or ten pick without playing. Taking the chance of injury or flopping would be foolish.

I’m not going worry about this one right now. But didn’t he get a pretty big NIL deal? I know that’s not NBA money by any means, but it might keep him in Lex for another season to show off and still get paid.
He will want to get his first NBA contract going and out of the way as quickly as possible so that he can negotiate that second contract!

My apologies for assuming. Your post came across that way. If caring about the well being of the program over an individuals success is considered selfish, then you hit the nail on the head with me bud and I wear it proudly. For the life of me, I can’t understand why some fans are cool with rooting for players to leave UK early at the detriment of the program. Especially in Sharpe’s case where he comes for a half year, uses all of our facilities and training for free, collects bookoos of money from NIL while a player like Oscar can’t, and UK gets absolutely NOTHING in return. And for what? Do you know these kids personally? Are you getting a piece of that action? I will never root for a talented player to leave early. Idc if they’re the number 1 pick. I want them back at UK and that’s the end of it. The only way I can see this making sense is if Sharpe is close with another player or played with another player in high school or AAU that Cal wants in the future and that relationship would help.
I can absolutely agree with you in being annoyed at him leaving the program after a year, not just from a pure UK fan perspective, but in general. But I don’t agree with talking down on an 18 year old kid for doing everything he can to ensure that he’s a lottery or top 5 pick.

There’s zero chance that both Cal and Sharpe didn’t know was an option going into this. But I also highly doubt that was the plan all along.

Look at the reaction of the fan base when we heard that he is eligible. Now that it’s out, there’s going to be constant bickering, speculation, etc. around the league, by fans, and in the UK program. And all we heard is that he’s eligible. Not leaving, not testing the waters, just eligible. I can one thousand percent see them not wanting this to leak solely to limit the distractions during the season.
My post was made because all we see is the small picture, outside view. We know nothing of what’s actually going on and flat out assume the worst, and take it out by trashing the team and kids without taking everything into consideration.
