Sam Vecenie: “Oscar/UK need to part ways” if championship is the goal

This guy is 1000% correct Oscar is as bad a defender as you will find - he can’t handle the ball and can’t score back to the basket

Think the best Oscar critique he offered up was the rebounding stats coming off a lot of blown shots close to rim for Oscar. For every game where he was all over the glass like Providence, there are Oscar moments where it's 3/4 rebs in one possession when a shot should've been put down in the 1st attempt. Hard worker? Absolutely. Crude offensive player? That's true too.
Oscar Tshiebwe's 56% field goal percentage this season doesn't jibe all that much with the 3/4 rebounds per offensive possession argument?

Johnson didn’t beat us. He made a big shot toward the end, but the little guy beat us. He completely facilitated the game the last 5 minutes any way he wanted. Kudos to him. CCC did NOTHING, once again, to counter.
Toppin allowed both large game 3 point shots. We alol talk about Oscar’s lousy defense, but we don’t talk about Toppin’s lousy defense.

So Oscar doesn't trick wide open layups/close shots a lot? I mean it's okay to admit someone is not perfect. If he's shooting 56% from the field, there are a lot of shots being missed too. I think he gave everything he had, embrace that he's a Christian and applaud him. That said, I'm not going to ignore his faults as a player either. At no point did I say did that PER offensive possession. That's putting words in my mouth. But there are times, he will get 3/4 rebs due to throwing up some crap and it's far more effective against a Providence say then it is when you play better teams. That won't win in Postseason and plays into the fact that building around him won't cut it. Part of the puzzle? Yes-the main piece? Nope.

Good lord
The problem is the damn coach
Not Oscar
Oscar is a fine piece to work with
Thank you! What is Cal going to do when there isn't someone gathering in 25 rebounds to give extra shot attempts? Oscar was one of few making Cal's clusterF offense look decent through sheer effort and will power alone.

Scroll to the 3 minute mark …I have a lot of respect for this guys opinion …says he understands why UK fans are pissed lol …the last couple minutes gives suggestions on what Cal should do with the roster moving forward …said we will never win a championship with Oscar
We will also never win another championship with Calipari here.

My apologies RDfan, my intent was not to bust chops on your post. But my prose sure comes across that way. That's on me.

Oscar is a rebounding machine, and his 56% FG more than checks the efficiency box. He brings high energy with him, and 1.6 steals per game for a post player is pretty impressive. But Oscar has his share of limitations. He doesn't have any real range on his shot which makes him pretty one-dimensional on offense. Oscar gets a lot of touches but only averages 1.6 assists per game. And Oscar's undersized for a five.

Can Oscar be the main piece for a championship contender? Very few fives are, and Oscar is not the exception. Can Oscar be a major contributor on a championship contender? Yeah, I think Oscar would have played a huge role on the '86 Cardinals, the '87 Hoosiers, the '95 UCLA Bruins, the '00 Spartans, the '13 Cardinals, etc. Can a team win the championship with Oscar playing the role of a Manning from the '88 Jayhawks or Carmelo from the '03 Orangemen? Nada, Oscar doesn't have anywhere near that kind of skillset. But the suggestion/implication by Vecenie as well as others on this board that UK won't be successful with Oscar still on the roster, at least from my vantage point, is a silly argument. Even with a banged up knee, Oscar is a beast who has a major impact in the games he plays. But the fact he doesn't have the ability to carry a team on his back doesn't equate to UK being better off without Oscar.

I mean there's a reason that every NBA team runs pick and roll as their #1 offensive set, it is hard to defend. Nothing is insightful about saying teams struggle to defend it. What Vecenie said that made 100% sense is you need roster versatility and that means capable players who can run guys off the 3pt line into the paint where there's rim protection. My biggest complaint with Cal and recent Kentucky teams is their time/score defense. Late in a game, you have to protect against the 3pt shot until the last possession of a 1 or 2 pt game. If you are up 4--"hug" or get up on the guards and force 2 pt shots. That is #1 objective. Can't speak to how many times they let an opponent take a 3pt shot and been burned.

The odd forced subbing that Vecenie didn't discuss also has killed Kentucky. There was no reason to sub in Lance Ware at end of the 1st Half. None. Cost UK 4 pts and while everyone says "You got up in 2nd Half-that doesn't matter"-it does. When you were up 8/9-that becomes 12-13 and mentally effects each team differently. Start stretching postseason games to 4 possession leads and never know how a team will respond, but a lot of elbows get tight and shot selection gets heroic instead of breaking you down. Your best players need to play in Postseason period. It's not time to make everyone participate. Oscar had 1 foul and if he gets 2, so be it, but those points gifted away haunt you in the end.

That wasn't Vecenie's point, nor is it those who think it's time to part company. It's the fact that he can't be the focal point of the team and I'd say 100% of those who feel this way don't trust Calipari to NOT attempt to play this way. It has everything to do with that angle and not Oscar as a player. Look at the Summer Trip. Bad competition? Sure. But the team played in a manner that would work with Oscar. He wasn't the focal point of the team-they played around him and he did many positive things, but offense was built around team and he was part of it. That's how you play with Oscar.

It all comes back to Calipari and trusting how he'd use his personnel. At least in my opinion. Can't speak for others but that's what I don't like about idea of his return more than anything to do with Oscar himself as a player. Then again the last 2 Bahamas Trips, I've enjoyed watching the style Kentucky plays more due to Cal not being on the sidelines then when he has the same personnel in-season. Loose and relaxed and just playing like a Blueblood program usually plays against teams-aggressive and loose. All of Calipari's teams look tight in recent years. Playing not to screw up. Playing not to get subbed out. Etc...

Vecenie actually said Oscar could go to another team and win 20 or so regular season games …but in the NCAA tourney to win it all means winning 6 consecutive games …6 different teams with 6 different playing styles …he just thinks teams in the tourney, and each round you advance the competition gets harder …will exploit Oscar in pick an roll situations at some point …which is exactly what KSU did …and Vecenie said pick and roll offense wasn’t KSU strength but they did it to take advantage of Oscars weaknesses

Worth revisiting I think …love Oscar but …🤷‍♂️
Dumb.

You go out of your way to applaud Shaedon Sharpe but crap on a two time-All American and one-time NPOY when rumors break that he wants to come back again?

No one actually believes you cheer for Kentucky at this point.

Interesting take. I agree that Sam is very insightful and knows a lot about the game. What bothers me is that folks are picking Oscar apart for something that’s been an achilles heel for Cal teams for many years even with more versatile big men. The P&R/ball screen teams have always killed us and we never seem to learn from it. We always play into their hand and let them do what they want to do.
Agree.

Lol …Did you listen to him Saul ? He actually makes some good points …he’s one of the top writers and analysts on the planet …sorry it doesn’t match your narrative

How can anyone look at what transpired in that last game and not see that the shooters just could not make shots? Has been the same the last 3-4 years in most big games. Has to do with Cal's coaching somehow. Not Oscars play but shooters. Oscar has been the only real bright light in 2 years. If Wheeler had played that game Oscar would have been saved. He would ave been blamed.
