Reed Sheppard committing Saturday

I'm surprised it is this early regardless. I don't know the NIL rules enough to know how this benefits him, but to commit to another school this early- just don't see it....not unless he plans on transferring out of KY.
This is where my suspicions come from. Reed committing this early could only mean one of two things:

1. Commits to UK and everything is great.

2. Is planning to transfer out-of-state for remainder of high school career and commits somewhere else.

I mean if he doesn't come to UK it would hands down be the most shocking recruiting loss in the history of our program, no hyperbole.

1. Both his parents starred at UK
2. He is a lifelong UK fan

If that isn't enough...

3. He already has some video thing he is doing on Twitter that is sponsored by White/Greer/Maggard. They are a major sponsor of UK athletics.
Yes under any other coach who has been at the helm for the last 92 years it would be shocking but not under Calapari.

I’d come . Just saying.

If he was Mike Casey or Jimmy Dan Conner, or Winston Bennett or many other 5 star kids that were from in-state over the years, yes it could be called a dumb decision but they were all the very top recruit for UK and he is is not....Cal is all over one and dones that he can put in the league that will make it a life changing experience for the kid and him. I personally doubt very seriously that he will be boo'd everywhere he goes. I think the vast majority of people in the state, especially those who have followed UK for years will understand him not going to UK if that is what he decides to do
Must be nice to be that naive.
Anyone who harasses a kid over a decision to play at another school, is petty in my opinion
Didn't say it wasn't, but it's happened in the past and will definitely happen in this situation if he picks against UK. Just the way it is.

That would make zero sense and why would teachers know?
I agree it makes zero sense. Teachers hear people talk at school, around the kids daily, etc. Personally, I still think it’s UK but I just got a couple texts this morning saying otherwise. I think there’s no shot he commits now to UVA and plays the next two seasons here as the villain.

Could go from an all time legend to the most hated kid in Kentucky

Helps Cal in ways I cannot even tell you. Big time pickup legacy recruit. Good job Cal that’s what we want.

Jeff and Cal hate each other so much. He’s a “Pitino guy” through and through. Guess we’re just “lucky”.
don't know anything about the Cal & Jeff hate feud, but i would hope that isn't true
Jeff was one of the more liked kids that played for UK & led them to a title
If Cal is that stupid not to recognize that, then ............
Again, this is another example of Cal being probably the last coach to offer the kid
That may mean something & then again it may not
Reed has also seen how the home grown kids have been treated during Cal's tenure,
Any kid that hasn't been rated as a 5* did not get a chance

I hope he picks UK, but can sure understand if he doesn't

Did you go to UK?

Un less his dad was a great ball player at UK, not really

That I agree with.I was talking about why you ask the poster if he went to UK.

We make fun of Wisconsin for being mean to Herro after he chose UK. I hope we're better than that.
Well, there is a clear difference. The issue with Herro was that he originally committed to Wisconsin and acted like he was eager to be a Badger, but then abruptly flipped to UK during his senior year.

Sheppard hasn’t committed to UK so there won’t be any sense that he jerked us around like that if he chooses someone else.

That I agree with.
I see your avatar...You see him along with Pratt and Issel in mine. Casey is a great example. Coach Rupp and Lancaster had him all line up when he was a 9th grader. Casey told them about this, time, same as now for Reed. Let me enjoy my last two years of HS. I am coming. He was UK's #1 target. Reed is not Cal's #1 target as he should be. Reed has been Tony Bennett's and UVA's #1 target since the process started not an obligation. He might surprise me and come just to prove Cal wrong. I am worried about him coming and Cal not giving him the opportunity to prove just how good he really is.

If he does choose UVA over UK I could see a few reasons why:

1. His parents played here - this cuts both ways. It could be he prefers to follow his own path and create his own legacy.

2. He's not a 1AD player - going to a more traditional program where players aren't recruited over and stay longer may be a better fit for him and more appealing. Everyone has seen how Cal favors his 1AD players over the others. Multi-year players have to take that into consideration before deciding whether or not to come here.

3. UVA is a damn good school and difficult to get into. It's not ivy league but it's close.

This is my thought, he might be seeing how Allen is utilized and think yeah no thanks. Allen has been recruited over every year and that probably doesn't sit well with someone who doesn't think they'll be a one and done.

If he’s committing this early, then I’d think it has to be UK.

And for good reason. That kid is gonna make outrageous NlL money if he follows in his father’s footsteps. Purely from a financial perspective, it doesn’t make sense for him to choose anyone else.
I agree that an early commitment is a good sign for us (UK).

But I don't think NIL should factor into a decision UNLESS you are so good (i.e. Wagner, Banchero) that it doesn't matter where you go (you OAD lottery pick) or you are so bad that you have no chance at ever getting drafted.
I don't think Sheppard is either of those.

Great observation especially #3

Allen was not a 5*. Like it or not, we all know Cal has an affinity for 5* players and getting them on the floor. So the guys he should look at would be Tyty, Boston, Maxey, Quickley, Herro, Green, Diallo, Monk.

To be fair,

I want us to have better players than Allen. Allen is a solid player. But we need Tyty and Grady.
As Allen improves in the next year or 2--maybe he gets to where Grady is. I don't think he's that today.

I love the idea of Reed Sheppard at UK because I think/hope he's a 3-4 year guy. But I don't think Reed Sheppard as a freshman is going to necessarily warrant 20+ minutes a game.

I didn't mean to say the thought process was correct or rational, I can just see where a guy might look at a KY kid who is getting recruited over and not playing much and decide he'd rather go elsewhere.
