Reds

Just don't think the Reds can get it done with the current starting rotation they have. Lodolo, Ashcraft and Greene all on the IL. They are going to have to make a couple trades.
Ashcraft should be back this weekend for the series vs the Braves though I do think they have to find a veteran starter somewhere.

Just realized Kevin Herget was DFA yesterday as well. He and Myers were the easy moves with much harder decisions yet to come.

Saw that but didn't even know he was on the active roster, thought they optioned him to Louisville on the 11th. Also, Kuhnel sent from the Bats to the Astros.

EDIT Wrong on Kuhnel, still was on the Reds but within his 7-day window after being DFA'd when the Astros worked a deal with Cincinnati for him.

Can one of you baseball experts explain to me why would you take a pitcher, that threw only nine pitches to retire the side out? I know strategy is different now, but it makes no sense to me. Go Reds Go Cats!

Elly De La Cruz 3 hits, 2 runs scored and an RBI. Back up to hitting .308 after the initial slump.

People need to pump the brakes on Elly. 2 games. Anyone who has watched baseball knows his struggles against MLB pitching will happen sooner than later and it will be brutal. He just needs to keep his head.

Update on Elly, who actually has been struggling against major league pitching…

.308 batting average
.379 on-base %

On 150-game pace for 25 home runs, 155 runs, 75 rbi, 75 stolen bases without a caught stealing, and he’s playing solid D as the youngest player in the National League.

10 in a row. I know. I’m very upset, too.

TJ Friedl first 4 hit game too. 3 RBIs and hitting .322 this season. Everyone is a threat up and down this lineup. On this run with the Big 3 in the starting rotation on the shelf too. When they do come back, should be rested for the stretch run if they stay the course.

Other than tomorrow and the Nats series, the Reds only play good teams thru July 30th. They'll earn their record one way or another by August. So exciting for the first time in a while and the crowd enthusiasm embodies all the progress we've seen in such a short time.

Totally agree I don't understand why he didn't go another inning. Diaz is being overpitched and it's going to catch up to him. No way he pitches tomorrow and they have an off day on Thursday which will help.

Atlanta is going to be a huge test this weekend but feel much better having won a series at home vs the Dodgers and going on the road in Houston to sweep the Astros.

He is clearly looking fatigued. Should have let Duarte pitch a 2nd inning having thrown over 9 pitches. Legumina came in giving up 3 earned runs making it a save situation when this should have a night off for Diaz. Santillan & Law can't come back soon enough to give this bullpen a rest.

Think I heard them say Diaz has been in 7 of the last 11 games. Thought in his last 2 appearances he looked tired. Larkin, while admitting he wasn't a pitching expert, said a RHP leaving his fastball up and in to a righty hitter is usually a sign of fatigue.

Reds BP has been hot in winning streak. I've been amazed how often teams have failed to get 2 out hits with RISP. Hope it keeps up.

We'll find out this weekend. They're up against a wall rotation wise, may have to put somebody out there on four days rest, or have one of those bullpen games again, unless Ashcraft can come back. Hopefully the time off has rejuvenated Ashcraft and he comes back strong. Diaz needs a rest in a big way, like an entire series off, which sucks considering the Braves are in coming to town. He had to dig really deep to get out of that game last night. He's been way overused the past couple of weeks. Still think Bell pulls the plug on starters too early sometimes.

It's all about lefty-righty matchups and not wearing out arms. If he only threw nine pitches he'll be available again in short order. or sometimes if a guy pitched the day before as well they don't want to extend him. But last night there was no reason for it, Diaz needed a rest.

Not comforting to recall that in something like Ashcraft's previous 13 starts his ERA is nearly 7. And it was a hot shot to the leg that put him on the IL. Now Greene's out for at least 2 weeks and Lodolo's out until at least August. Reds SP is up against the wall.

One of the articles I read on the Reds site mentioned Greenes injury could keep him out until August. Hope that was just some off the wall speculation.

Never know, is it muscle or joint? I've never heard. Obviously joint would be a more critical injury.

Pretty confident Reds will trade for a SP, probably a rental(saw Beiber mentioned yesterday). My concern is CES appears to be the odd man out at this time, I'm afraid he'll be at the center of a trade. Otherwise, Reds would have to move Newman and/or Senzel and I don't think they'll do that, would be a mistake to lose CES. Lefty hitting OF of Benson, Freidl, Fraley is here to stay.

Do the Reds trade for Chapman?

They weren't afraid to move guys like Brandon Drury last year after having them around for a 1/2 year. I have to think moving Newman to make way for CES would be the preferred move. They need CES's power in the lineup. I can't see him being the odd man out.

Coming around on the Chapman idea to give the bullpen an All-Star and the man says he wants to be here. Probably could move some of the prospects that are unlikely to be apart of the Reds future with the logjam ahead of them. Shane Bieber would be who this team needs if they are serious about a run in 2023. Likely forces the Reds to put together a package like Seattle had to do for Castillo with 1-year left of team control and was signed to a massive extension. Can the Reds afford that with Bieber who is an UFA after next season? Guess we'll see how aggressive they get and the rotation needs depth. Krall says they have some payroll flexibility but never know what that truly means in terms of Reds spending.

How about Rake Fraley 2-run go-ahead home run. 8 wins for Ian Gibaut. EDLC despite getting doubled up hitting .321 now, Stephenson with 3 hits and Maile driving in 2 runs.

Diaz got some rest today and a day off before the big series with the Braves over the weekend. If the Reds do trade for Chapman, would be huge to have another big time reliever with his experience as a closer. Down the stretch, firm believer in having well rested arms if you want to contend in October.

Just 17 more to tie 1916 Giants' record.
Will be tough to ever beat that record, Cleveland was close a few years back with 22 I believe. The Reds franchise longest winning streaks were 14 games in the 1899 & 1890 seasons. Three of the Cincinnati Reds teams with 10-plus-game winning streaks went on to win the World Series. ;)

Eduardo Rodriguez in Detroit would be another trade target. Also of the White Sox, Lucas Giolito who is having a better season than Dylan Cease. Would be shocked to see the Cardinals ship Flaherty to a division rival or Corbin Burnes to the Reds as they couldn't afford him. Milwaukee must trade Burnes at this point. Not been near as productive as his previous seasons of the past and as the MLB Network analysts said, he is pissed with how his arbitration case went so it's really all between the ears with him. There are rumors of Shane Bieber though he would require multiple top prospects and Cincinnati unlikely to afford him in free agency.

Remains to be seen how aggressive the Reds want to be in this. None of these guys mentioned will come without parting with some top prospects. A lot of teams are still in the 'mix' for the postseason at the moment. Perhaps a pitcher like Kyle Freeland & German Marquez from a team like the Rockies out of contention would be willing to move him. Brad Keller of the Royals would be the cheaper end of the spectrum that would eat innings and bring experience to the team. Has had some decent seasons with KC.
If the Reds go with a cheaper rental that won't cost much and deal with Detroit, a Michael Lorenzen reunion would be just fine with me. Always liked that guy and have 2 catchers with Casali & Stephenson that he has previous experience working with.
