Reds

Nice debut for Abbott, he can really build on that performance. Hate to be picky, hope he can reduce the BBs in the future. This game showed the need for HR hitters. Reds must bring in more power into small park.

Steer in LF. Even more encouraging to see him move there for whenever CES & Votto get back. Don't expect Newman at 1B much. Not sure why the .341 hitting TJ Hopkins is on the pine over Fairchild hitting .143 in his last 7 games.

Predicted Steer to LF a few days ago, slowly making way for CES at 1B I hope. Votto likely DHs only when/if he returns. I know Fairchild had HR last night but that's hard to figure. Barrero hasn't played since Boston GS I don't think. If they're not going to play him send him to AAA for ABs. Still think OF should be Steer in LF, Freidl when healthy/Barrero in CF, Fraley/Hopkins in RF.

Steer to LF needs to be a regular occurrence. When Votto returns I don't see him as an everyday player especially if he doesn't play any at 1B though I expect he will play some at 1st since CES did get shifted to 3B over the weekend for Votto to rehab at 1B. Votto can't be the every day DH either since Stephenson will need to move from behind the plate every so often. Still don't view Stephenson as an everyday catcher for the longevity of his career but his bat is a different story. It is coming around lately. I'm fine with Votto & CES shifting back and forth at 1B/DH in Cincinnati for 2023 while Votto can continue to mentor him at the MLB level so long as it gets CES up here.

Today's the day for minor league watchers! Let's see how it goes for the long haul and how EDLC progresses vs MLB pitching.

Does anyone actually expect minor league results immediately at this level? Fairchild has only shown glimpses so far and as well as McLain has started, it's hard for me to expect him to hit .330 the rest of the way. Pitchers get paid too.

Totally not what I said or was getting at. You can make that argument literally about any player that debuts (EDLC & Hopkins) but one thing for certain, you aren't going to get results sitting on the bench... Makes no sense to call up a prospect, take away everyday at-bats and sit him. Well aware hardly anyone matches minor league production right off the bat. Not a new baseball fan...

Yup, numbers are gonna be harder come by as development is what matters at 21 years old, referring to ELDC. No idea how old Hopkins is but your point about he and Barrero sitting also applies here.

I'm fine with rookie growing pains so long as they get the opportunity to play through them. Development is what 2023 is all about. I'm hopeful for a good 2024 season though it may be 2025 once they have more money to spend and a full season of experience. Even India in his Rookie of the Year season struggled in late April-mid-May but Bell did right by him letting him play. Paid off.

Hopkins, 26 having his best season and at that age having played in college and no MILB season the time is now for him. The best outfield prospects are in A Ball. Siani the exception hitting .209 in Louisville. Feel for Barrero right now. Still doesn't even have a full season worth of at-bats in the majors and finds himself sitting. Does he need more at-bats in AAA? Couldn't hurt but probably better off in another organization at this point that will give him consistent at-bats in MLB.

Surprised he has been as durable as he has and became the innings eater Cincinnati needed. I suppose he is doing his job for that though it's not always been pretty.
Except for tonight, his shortest start. 3 2/3 7 runs. Not surprised, his start vs another high-powered offense with the Yankees was his 2nd shortest of the year.

Hard to see where Myers factors into this equation with Benson, Hopkins both joining the outfield, Barrero sitting and Votto rehabbing now. Blog Red Machine did an article about the future of Fairchild with Hopkins up. Just a couple years ago he was a top 10 prospect for the Reds and since been passed around with Seattle, Arizona & San Francisco before coming back. Newman should be dealt to clear the room in the infield and keep around more versatile players like Barrero & Senzel for bench depth. Whenever CES does come up you have him, Votto, Steer, Casali & Stephenson who have all played 1st without needing to keep Newman & Myers. If you keep one, maybe Newman since he isn't hurting the team. Another one, will the Reds finish 2023 with 3 catchers?

Barrero doesn't reach arbitration until 2025 and under team control through 2027. They have to figure something out with him. The bench isn't the answer and CF is his best shot in Cincinnati. In all reality, Louisville is his best bet right now if he stays with the Reds organization. If I were him, I would want to get to a team that has room for him to grow at SS still. Bet Oakland would love to have him right now.

Do they continue to run with three catchers? Could either Casili or Maile be moved to open up a roster spot since it looks like TS is going to be catcher and DH. He hasn’t gotten any run at 1B this year so far.

This is how I see it. Typically, I expect them to struggle with the initial adjustment getting to MLB. Of course some will take off like McLain has but a few weeks in, the league will get a scouting report how to pitch a player. That's when we see the rookie wall and they get some film to work on to make the necessary adjustments to bounce back into the productive prospect we all expect them to. For some it may never click or become a late bloomer. It's always nice to find a diamond in the rough kind of player like Scooter Gennett or Brandon Drury and even BP when Cleveland gave up on him. I remember the Yankees believing they had something in Gary Sanchez the first couple of years hitting 20 home runs in his first 2 months of 2016 while Judge hit .179. How things changed.

It's a good question. Robinson in Louisville may make it more possible to deal one with a team hurting at the deadline. If TS does get a shot at 1B, the window is narrowing with Votto coming back plus whenever CES gets here.

Speaking of Votto, I hope the Reds do him right. I would hate to see him go to another team for a couple of twilight seasons, but I know the Reds will smartly not be exercising the 20+ million dollar option next season. They just need to find a way for him to retire a Red even if it’s one of those one day contracts. After he goes somewhere else for a year or two. Hopefully he just hangs it up after this year anyway.

Salazar looked more comfortable out there again with a scoreless inning following up the 3 scoreless innings vs Milwaukee. Hopefully you can just chalk up those first couple of games to nerves making your MLB Debut and settling in. First career win!

It would be interesting to know (and likely impossible to find out) the average age of all teams who played baseball tonight.

With J. India looking like the “old hand,” the Reds may well have had the youngest starting lineup in baseball.

Rallying from an 8-3 deficit is pretty special.

3 hits tonight for Encarnacion-Strand

Votto 0-5, continued to play at 1B with CES at 3B. Votto's rehab is going to be lengthy and wouldn't put it past CES getting up here sooner at the rate the Reds are promoting the top prospects. If the Reds are satisfied with Encarnacion-Strand's development at 1B, seems like it would be a good time to call him up over using Newman at 1B again.

So it would seem. The ball jumps off EDLC's bat into the gaps so effortlessly like it did Griffey Jr with his bat speed and pop.
