Reds

Mr Terry, who do you think replaces Castillo/Mahle in the Reds starting rotation? The Three Amigos, Minor and............??

Get Barrero up here to start his make or break time, I like it. Others to follow.
I would think Dunn will get a few starts and will still compete for a back end role next season, though I expect him to be a bullpen piece in the future. Maybe Williamson gets a shot once the roster expands.

Dunn is/was the original plan I guess but he has struggled. Scheduled for second game of DH today(Wed) but last start gave up something 6 runs in 3-4 IP, ERA over 7. Would think we'll see Williamson sooner rather than later. Although I've seen nothing official, there's talk Greene may be shut down because he's reaching his career high in IP. You hearing anything like that? Imagine Overton, Petty et al would figure in soon.

Last I saw Bell on tv speaking of Greene, he said they havent changed his workload yet and that it will be good for him to learn through a whole season.

Was at the bats game last week with Dunn pitching...he got lit up pretty good. low 90s, nothing standout with the offspeed. but thats just one outing.

Can somebody that better understands the nuances of baseball explain something that's always baffled me? Was reading the scouting report on Marte and they mentioned that his bat would profile better at 3B than SS. I've never understood the correllation between Where you bat in the lineup or your hitting ability as it relates to your position. I get it that your fastest players and best base stealers are likely centerfielders or Shortstops/2B guys. they are typically the most athletic guys. I get it that Pitchers with very rare exceptions aren't going to be good hitters because they don't practice it much. I get it that most catchers are bottom of the lineup hitters because of the grind they have to go through during a game, but outside of that, why can't Marte have the bat he has and profile as a SS or CF? Why are there certain batting expectations by positions?
Don't know if I understand this better than anyone else but here's how I see this: First, the old baseball adage is "you have to be strong up the middle" meaning C, mid-Inf and CF are most important to your team defense. Old time thought was mid-inf/CF needed to be quicker/faster guys therefore were likely a little smaller. We know now with nutrition/conditioning improvements that's no longer the case. Anyway, past thought was corner inf, 3B/1B, were run producers/power guys, therefore bigger/stronger types. Same for corner OFers, LF/RF. That's how teams were built for decades, generations. Mid-inf/CF set the table, corners drive them in.

I hope the Machado/Marte thing is true. Don't know where any of these guys ends up, it'll be fun watching how it turns out. I'll likely follow AFL/winter ball much closer this year.

Robert Dugger replacing Castillo in starting rotation, what could possibly go wrong?

Could be worse options. His last performance was decent all things considered eating innings giving the Reds 3 2/3 scoreless with 5 K's vs the Pirates. A quality start vs Minnesota this year while with TB holding them to 3 runs in 5 1/3 and pitched a good game vs the Reds in 2019 without an earned run in 7 innings. Overton should be back before the season is up and last I saw started a throwing program in mid-July. Upon his return, there's another option Bell has to fill the void left behind with Castillo/Mahle.

Greene to the IL. This is why young starters need rest at the end of the season, especially flame throwers like Hunter Greene.

Road to the MLs is littered by the carcasses of young pitchers who couldn't stay healthy. Is Greene going to be next?
I like to think he’s going to be fine. I think this is on the staff for not giving him some breaks.

For sure. Other than MP Reds light weights Senzel/Aquino have key hits today then a guy with one career save gets his second in 8 years and the Reds win the series. Can't depend on that every day of course.
Considering the rest of the season is going to be a jumbled hodge podge of lineups and roster moves, they're going to have to depend on that daily.

At this rate they'll be lucky to get 45 wins. May set a record in futility.
So what's the deal with the ineptness of the training staff and coaches to adequately prepare the players? The Reds lead all of MLB with the number of players on the IL. Do they just have a bunch of injury prone guys? or is it the system? I know Spring Training was shortened, but damn, not many other teams experiencing the kinds of injuries the Reds have been dealing with. Are they not stretching properly or preparing properly?
I know I'm reaching back a little bit but tonight had me thinking about this post with the way the Reds are dropping like flies.

Maybe they'll start moving some of the prospects now instead of slow dragging them thru the system.
Guess find out if anyone is going to be out awhile. Haven't seen any updates this morning so far. If we're being honest with ourselves, there are multiple guys in the pipeline who could make the jump, injuries or not. Spencer Steer for starters. De La Cruz, McLain, McGarry or Christian Encarnacion-Strand would be great but not holding my breath. Dunn was 1 out from a quality start and all for him staying in the rotation. The Reds don't have to limp to the finish!

DLC had another multi-hit game in AA Sun, is hitting over .300...what more does he have to prove in AA? Give him a couple of weeks in AAA then finish the season with the Reds. Steer/CE-S need to be on the move too.

Not real impressed with Dunn. Fly ball pitchers won't work in GABP. Know he's coming off injury/surgery but his stuff is really soft. Get another newby Wed.

It's why I go on a tangent when it doesn't have to be this way. Need them up for more than a cup of coffee

May be right about Dunn long term. In the meantime, I would rather in a lost season find out if he's going to cut it now or move on without the looming question mark if he's going to be in the rotation while the rotation is injury plagued. At the end of the day, if we're going to lose may as well do it right and go for the #1 pick and wouldn't even be tanking.

Yeah, this is the year to see what you have in Dunn, same with Zeuch, but I'm not holding my breath with either. Just doubt either will be a long term solution. But roll them out there and see what they can do.

Levi Stoudt, one of the pitchers acquired from the Mariners in the Luis Castillo trade, will start for Louisville tonight. He made just one start in Chattanooga before getting promoted.

With Matt McLain likely nearing a Louisville promotion as well, that'll put Spencer Steer, Brandon Williamson, Stoudt and McLain all on the cusp of either being brought up in September or having a chance to earn a job in spring training.

Got to add DLC to that list, he's had several multi-hit games in AA recently and is hitting over .300. What more could he have to prove at AA? Probably can add CE-S to that list too, nice power.

For real! If anyone deserves to be called up now its him. At this point, just want him to get enough run at AAA that he could start next season at MLB since it seems unlikely we're seeing Elly in a Reds uniform this year. The rest are in that age 24 range and players like Williamson/Steer could be making an impact on the MLB roster now.

I do think Elly makes his debut next season but I'd bet he finishes this season in Chattanooga. He's only played in 15 games there. I've watched most of those games and he's special. I'd feel even better if they go ahead and move him to CF.

We can agree that DLC is destined for CF. Move him now plus AFL.

Should have been called up around the beginning of June and we wouldn't be having a discussion about how few of games he's played at AA.

I made a post in here about moving him to the outfield a few weeks ago before the draft selecting Collier/Stewart at 3rd and the acquisitions of shortstops at the deadline. The Reds have yet to play him in 1 game in the OF. If they're waiting on the Arizona Fall League, then no reason to hold him down in Chattanooga without a callup to Louisville this season.

I don’t know how you guys do it on top of everything in MiLB. Honestly the Korn Ferry Tour is 100x more interesting to me. Wake me up when these future bums get to the Majors!

It is such a Cincinnati move to callup Alejo Lopez over Spencer Steer. No gumption! Like I said, should have been called up already, injury or not.

Louisville North having trouble scoring runs. Reds only team in baseball with what amounts to two AAA teams. Consider the Reds gave away 60+ HRs off the '21 team and failed to replace them despite playing in a bandbox facility. Fraley had a nice dinger Tues night but are the Reds really going to depend on Fraley for HRs?

I'm seldom critical of Bell because he really has very little to work with but didn't like his choice of pinch hitting the 7th grader for Barrero with the bases drunk Tues. GS ties the game and while Barrero has struggled mightily he does have some power. Lopez getting the ball out of the infield would be big news. The hole the Reds are in is deeper than the Grand Canyon.

Just frustrating. I am hopeful Fraley can keep this up as he has been competent since coming off the injured list in a small sample size. Could see him being a solid contact hitter, a good 4th OF option on a legit contender like Naquin and has made some good plays in the OF throughout his career. Agree he can't be expected to be a power hitter for the Reds and that home run he crushed while impressive, was an 85 mph pitch smack down the middle with Carrasco gassed.

Lopez with a grand total of 1 RBI in his major league career and struggling to grasp the logic on why he is up over Spencer Steer. Not sure what the hold up on him not being placed on the 40-man roster when the Reds could use him now, appears to be ready and must be added to the 40-man roster to avoid the Rule 5 Draft this winter.

The bad news for the Reds is that the Bats have sucked too. Bats game I went to a couple weeks ago had: J Dunn, Almora, Fraley, Aquino, Lopez & Barrero in the starting lineup...they got thumped 6-0 in 5.

When the big league club has a talent and roster void, it drains the whole system.

I'm sure the AFL will be his best shot to make the move. just throwing him out there with no guidance in AA ball could be detrimental. It's a move that will need to happen in the off season where he can workout at the position before being thrown into the fire. but I agree, something has to give at SS and 3B and moving DLC to CF will be a good start.
