Reds

From trades the last couple of days it appears that IF the Reds trade Mahle, Drury, Solano they'll get little more than a lottery ticket. ML ready player just won't happen.
Drury is making 900K. There was some talk the Reds may try to resign him to an extension. Might not be a bad option if he can maintain his level of play for a couple more years. They have to have SOME players with some value on the roster or next year will be worse than this year.

Spencer Steer 2B/3B is ranked as the Twins 7th best prospect. OPS of .889 with 20 homers between AA and AAA this year.

Christian Encarnocion-Strand 1B/3B is the Twins 24th rated prospect. OPS of .986 with 25 homeruns between A+ and AA this year.

Steven Hajar LHP is ranked as the 18th prospect in the Twins organization. Currently sitting at a 2.47 ERA as a starter in A ball.

2:50pm: The teams have agreed to a trade sending Mahle to the Twins, tweets Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Ted Schwerzler of TwinsDaily reports that Minnesota is sending is sending infield prospects Spencer Steer and Christian Encarnacion-Strand to the Reds, as well as lefty Steven Hajjar (Twitter link).
All 3 look to be good additions. Steer in AAA with 20 HRs & 62 RBIs. Christian Encarnacion-Strand in AA with 25 HRs, 85 RBIs hitting .302. Early on Hajjar but a 3.18 ERA in 13 starts this season including rookie ball numbers. I like this trade.

So of all the prospects they've gotten so far, I would guess Steer is the closest to Major league ready?
Seriously, What is next years opening day lineup going to look like. Have to think they'll get a couple more of those Drury types that sign a minor league contract then blow up. Those are one thing they have had a measure of success with.

I'd be open to another year of him for the right price. Brandon will want to get paid off his production this year but both parties will need to be realistic. A 1-year deal or something short-term. Try again in 2024. if he proves this isn't just a solid 1 season output for him for a long term contract.

Seems that way, wonder if there's any chance he's up this season or September with the roster expansion to 28?

18 year old switch hitting SS signed out of the Dominican Republic last year. Ranked as the 6th best prospect in the Padres farm system. Playing rookie ball right now.
Hopefully he'll be worth something but not sure we needed anymore SS prospects especially after all of the trades San Diego has made in recent years plus the Soto blockbuster today cleaning house of their prospects. It's early but .243, 2 HRs & 11 RBIs hasn't got me excited.

Gotta think with all these SSs and middle infielders, they plan on changing positions or flipping them for something in the future.

Maybe the Reds are employing the college strategy of signing a bunch of athletic shortstops and playing them all over the field.

Yeah they need to start developing these guys around the field. Like moving Billy Hamilton from SS to the outfield needs to be considered more often. If you're athletic enough to play SS, you can move around the field and play another position. Rece Hinds has played some OF this year who is a 3B prospect and De La Cruz has some action at 2B/3B.

Would love to see some more transition to the OF while they're in the minors before reaching MLB. Hopefully the Reds will get to the point in a couple of seasons they can contend and many of them will be closer to the MLB level and get some quality pieces to help the team then.

Wish they had gotten a veteran catcher. With 2 months to go, plenty of time one could have helped our young pitching staff this year and lack of depth behind the plate too.

Casali went to Seattle for another Red on their roster. I liked him here in Cincinnati. He was productive in 2018-19 behind Barnhart and wish the Reds had him back right now.

What grade would you all give the Reds during the trade deadline? Anywhere you wish the Reds had addressed more?

For me, giving them a B-. Exceeded my expectations in the Seattle & Minnesota trades. Didn't like the Naquin trade. Pham to the Red Sox is unknown but the PTBNL rarely excites. Drury for a #6 prospect as a rental is nice on paper.

Thought Detwiler & Solano would be moved. Both are too old for a rebuild but like trueblujr2 said, you need somebody left on this roster at the end of the day.

Would've seen if anyone would bite for Mike Minor as a lefty #5 rotation option, rest a starter down the stretch for depth or long reliever in the bullpen. The Reds would have had to eat the salary remaining on him anyway.

Kind of shocked Hoffman is still a Red as a FA at the end of the year. Like Drury, this is the only year he has ever been productive. Would you have gotten a similar player of value in return? Doubtful.

As with all of these trades, we'll know in a few years how it will all turn out.

Got Austin Romine for a veteran catcher. I'll take it. Solid backup for the Yankees for years. Put Miguel Cabrera on his ass a few years ago in a brawl with the Yankees vs Tigers.

Exactly. SSs generally considered the best athletes on the team. Hopefully they'll spend rest of the minor league season plus fall/winter leagues finding positions for these guys. Saw where Matt McClain, for instance, was moved to 2B at Chattanooga.

Need more in the OF. India has 2nd base on lock.

Aquino back with this makeshift outfield. Chance after chance but let's forget all about Barrero playing in the outfield if we're in full blown tear down mode.

So a shortstop who can’t hit? Along the lines of Barrero and Billy Hamilton

How many shortstops and 3B do they need. How many will not be playing infield in the next few years. Will be interesting to see how many of these prospects pan out. Hopefully they got the real deal with at least a couple or three of them.

Basically how I'm seeing it especially after spending the top 2 picks on 3B. Here's a novel idea, instead of everyone having to transition to another position, start acquiring quality players in positions of need.

I know we need backups at 2B, but I’m guessing India is entrenched there for the foreseeable future. If McClain is going to make the MLB as an everyday player, where will it be?

I'd hate to see Cincinnati acquire all of this depth and restock the farm system to get to a point around 2024-25 and trade them off for someone the Reds can't afford long term during a quick 2-3 window to contend. Best to utilize the organization depth for once. I think Baltimore is doing the right thing. Didn't go overboard with a hot run in 2022 and have a loaded farm system. If only half of their prospects pan out, they will be deep and a force to reckon with. Hoping this will be the case for Cincinnati in a few years.

I guess it depends on India's arbitration/FA year. History pretty much shows he won't resign w/Reds, they don't seem to resign guys.

I've seen McClain mentioned at 3B and CF too. Maybe he'll just be a utility guy.

Reds Top 30 prospects look a lot different today. 7 new players in the top 20 and 8 in the top 30.

1. Noelvi Marte SS (Mariners)
6. Edwin Arroyo SS (Mariners)
7. Spencer Steer 2B/3B (Twins)
9. Chase Petty RHP (Twins)
16. Victor Acosta SS (Padres)
17. Christian Encarnocion-Strand 1B/3B (Twins)
18. Levi Stoudt RHP (Mariners)
30. Steve Hajjar LHP (Twins)

By then, India needs to get paid with Joey's money off the books if he's bought out in 2024, his 1st year of arbitration. UFA in 2027. I expect McLain will come around and not be another Senzel. Definitely need him to be more than a utility role player though it would be important for more players to get experience around the field if they want to play in Cincinnati.

Thanks, I hadn't seen an breakdown yet though I heard the Cowboy say before the game De La Cruz is no longer the #1 prospect in the organization. Krall got 2 quality SS for Castillo & Oakland traded Frankie Montas equally as good as Luis while not getting 1 of New York's top 2 SS with Peraza/Volpe.

Scouting report on the top guy from the Twins, Steer I think, mentions his ceiling may be as a utility man. While he's showing nice power he's pretty much average in everything else he does. Reds seemed to emphasis athletes in deals but he doesn't fit that mold. Just hope these new guys get max-PT in the rest of the minor league season and fall/winter ball.

Yeah, pretty good haul. Hopefully they can build an organization with depth and the ability to sustain some success.

My 8 year old son is excited for all the prospects. He says that's more autographs he can get when the Lookouts come through town to play the Tennessee Smokies. We missed De La Cruz this year.

On paper, it's an A for me. They acquired three top 100 prospects between Mahle and Castillo with Marte as the headliner and someone who's top 15 in some publications. The Mahle trade netted a top 100 prospect and someone who probably debuts soon, plus another hitter who's already in Double-A and is mashing this season. The pitcher is having a good year as well. The Twins writers were talking about how much it was to give up Mahle (who I believe is fairly underrated; I suspect he will do great in Minnesota). Landing an 18-year-old infielder from the Padres who was ranked No. 11 in the Padres system before the Soto trade was also very surprising to me and a job well done.

I must be in the minority here but taking two lottery tickets for Naquin makes way more sense to me than trading for some 25-year-old who's ranked in the 20s or something along those lines. These two guys are super young and will be molded in the Reds system.

Also, according to Spotrac and Baseball Reference, Hoffman only has a little over three years of service time and won't be a free agent until 2025.

That's awesome! Hope you all can get some of the future Reds when you go back and definitely can relate to the excitement of getting a Reds autograph from when I was a young boy.

Steer will be 25 in December and hope he will get called up to Cincinnati at some point before the season. Who in the organization do you think needs to move to another position the most? With India at 2B in stone, at SS/3B De La Cruz, McLain, Collier & Arroyo on the left side of the infield. Some will need to find PT elsewhere not to mention others who have a great shot at making it in Cincy.

I did not know Hoffman still had 2 more years of arbitration when I saw he was on a 1-year deal but this explains why. Glad the Reds are keeping him after all. Seemed like he was in Colorado for a while before the trade. He's finally found a niche in the Reds bullpen and eat innings in long relief. Won the Stephenson trade.

Overall, it was a productive trade deadline building up the Reds farm system. They needed to focus on adding position players with the solid pitching depth in the organization and certainly did this time. Wish Cincinnati had put some more emphasis on adding outfielders after losing Winker, Castellanos, Pham & Naquin. I'm sure with the depth of infielders some more will start to transition to the OF. Hopefully McGarry/Siani are in AAA soon and need McGarry up by next season to avoid losing him in the Rule 5 Draft.

Agree on Mahle. On the road has always been a solid pitcher and moving into a bigger ballpark at Target Field will help them. Team ERA above 4.00 and Sonny Gray is their #1 starter before the deadline.

I'll give it some time on the Naquin trade with Rodriguez & Acuna since they are still teenagers. Acuna had 5 innings without an earned run in his debut today.

A good haul from the Mariners for Castillo, especially considering what Oakland received for their ace from the Yankees. Looking forward to Marte after sliding ahead of EDLC as the Reds top prospect.

Who replaces Castillo and/or Mahle in the Reds starting rotation?

If the Reds had any gumption, Brandon Williamson. Also, have to consider the starts Greene & Ashcraft will miss for rest. Doubtful Lodolo, in fact he needs starts missing so much time. I know he's struggled but Dunn has MLB experience so he may be an option and is going to be 26 in September having played parts of 3 seasons with Seattle. Probably some opener situations like they did with Hoffman though I like his role currently in the pen. I still say Sanmartin gets at least 1 already on the active roster without adding someone not on the 40-man roster.

It is kind of surprising after losing 4 outfielders (2 NL All-Star starters last year) that one wasn't acquired at the deadline and taking the approach transitioning infielders to the outfield. Will be interesting to see over the coming years who the Reds will ultimately choose will have to move from the left side of the infield. The Reds have experimented with Senzel & Barrero from the IF to the OF. Who knows at this point when we're going to actually see Barrero in a Reds uniform again and how long the Senzel experiment lasts going forward.

Sad thing is that 3-22 start killed them. they are 39-39 since that point and 8-4 since the All-Star break. if they could have just managed near .500 ball in those first 25 games, they would only be about 4 games out of the last Wildcard spot and might have been buyers instead of sellers. But I guess they got a pretty good haul to shore up the farm system, so that's a good thing. At least I hope we see the fruits of it within a couple of years, just wondering how they're going to play 7 shortstops at once.

Can somebody that better understands the nuances of baseball explain something that's always baffled me? Was reading the scouting report on Marte and they mentioned that his bat would profile better at 3B than SS. I've never understood the correllation between Where you bat in the lineup or your hitting ability as it relates to your position. I get it that your fastest players and best base stealers are likely centerfielders or Shortstops/2B guys. they are typically the most athletic guys. I get it that Pitchers with very rare exceptions aren't going to be good hitters because they don't practice it much. I get it that most catchers are bottom of the lineup hitters because of the grind they have to go through during a game, but outside of that, why can't Marte have the bat he has and profile as a SS or CF? Why are there certain batting expectations by positions?

It sounds like that scouting report was worded strange. Every team would love to have an Alex Rodriguez or Ernie Banks type who can hit 40 or 50 home runs and handle the responsibilities at SS. Those guys just rarely exist. In Marte's case, he's likely just going to outgrow SS and won't be able to move the way a SS needs to. But he can still be a good defender and should hit for power, so he's a natural fit at 3B. Manny Machado feels like a good comp for him.
