This stretch will determine the Reds fate as far as being buyers or sellers at the trade deadline in late July.

The Reds have gone 29-28 since starting 1-8 and should be getting Scooter Gennett back in a week or so and Tyler Wood after the break.

Reds pitching continues to sparkle and the toughest part of the schedule is now behind the Reds.

They have stayed afloat with the amazing pitching and are within 7 games of Philly for 2nd Wildcard with still 96 to play and have a 4 game set v Philly in Cincy in early September that could be huge.

This could get very interesting over the next 3 weeks before the break.

Pitching's been adequate at times, hitting sucks. Hitting approach seems to be "swing hard in case you hit it." Talent level is overall poor. Hard to win Major League games with so much Minor League talent. Should be sellers if they can find somebody to take the deadwood off their hands. Afraid it'll take a collapse by other division teams for them to get out of the cellar.

The Reds are NEVER buyers. We had our 4 year window when Dusty was the manager. The Reds were as good as anyone those years. The problem was, the front office and the owner never added the missing piece to put Dusty and the Reds in position to win it all. The other contenders would rent a player or two to put their teams over the top.

Just look at the number of one run games they've lost this season as well. Consistent close losses also show just how poorly a team is managed. To be fair, there's not much to work with on the offensive end but relief pitching is a problem as well.

I quit reading your post when you said "adequate at times". The Reds team era is the second best in the National League and fourth best in all of baseball. And the bullpen right now ranks as the best in the National League.

Whatever but that is adequate, made my case. Midrelief is iffy.

Nice that alot of those games are at home but it's by no means an easy stretch. Only one team in that stretch currently has a losing record and they (the Angels) are only 2 games under .500. The Houston Astros are in that group too.

This, and the Reds aren't made up of a bunch of Minor League caliber players. But their hitting has been so atrocious, it's offset the good pitching. Not to mention i haven't been enamoured with David Bell all that much. There are a number of losses that lay squarely on his shoulders. Something does need to be done about the hitting, whether its a new hitting coach or whatever. a change in philosophy might help too. But I am glad to see Votto shake off his more atrocious than usual start. He's starting to rake now.

Bell 2nd night in a row pulling our closer Iglesias for Lorenzen. He's going to alienate the entire pitching staff before the season's up.

IMO, go 10-5 in next 15 and they are in the thick of things as 11 of the next 15 are against Brewers and Cubs. That will take a heck of an effort but is very possible...could really cut into division.

From CBS sports article....

"Ah yes, the Reds have some chances to do more than make up a few games this week. They could make some serious noise if they play well.

Starting Thursday, the Reds have a four-game series against the Brewers. It's in Milwaukee, so it's a tall order, but head-to-head games are always a big opportunity. But man, that's a four-game series with the Reds five games behind the defending division champion. That's opportunity right there.

Then, after two road games against the Angels, the Reds return to Cincinnati for a nine-game homestand that starts with three against the Cubs and is followed by four against the Brewers. Both have been sub-par road teams and surely Reds fans would like me to mention the Reds have already won both of their series against Chicago's North Siders."

His job is not to be their friend...
His job is not to mismanage the team and piss them off causing chemistry issues in the locker room... He's doing so good of a job doing it his way isn't he lmfao Do not misconstrue my post and twist it to be something it's not. I could point out several examples of player friendly managers with success but that was not the point of my post. No one said it was his job to be friends, that much is a given but sad when the team and homers turn a blind eye to glaring issues this team has had. Simple observations fans who actually follow this team would have noticed and been the buzz all week is his piss poor over management of the pitching staff. Not the first time this year either this has been an issue. Add Roark to his list as well.

The proof is in the putting. After voicing his frustrations, look what leaving Mahle out much longer did today vs one of MLB's best teams in GABP, Houston. We'll continue to lose players in FA or trades like Raisel who will get their save chances somewhere else and in more abundance with the loser mentality of Cincinnati Sports. 3 straight years of an ERA 2.50 or below and expect it will end up that way again, 2.96 currently. I don't buy into the high leverage situation usage of closers pulling them out with 1 out to go when 90% or better are still being used the conventional way.

Seriously, what have you seen from this team to think it's remotely possible to take 10 out of 15 better yet 11 of 15 from Milwaukee twice, Chicago Cubs, & Anaheim? Will even throw Cleveland in there with our interleague history. It's going to take more to convince me than a 3 game sweep of Houston at GABP. Swept LA for 4 last year in May at Dodger Stadium only for the rest of the year be a disaster.

Good pitching....hitting that is coming around. 9 of those games are at home. Not saying it is likely, but coming of a 3 game sweep of one of the best teams in baseball, the last of which was a walk off is encouraging.

Hell, if they go 9-6 they are likely to make up some ground and get to 2 or 3 out of division race.

All year waiting for bats to get going...it is bound to happen and with this pitching they are in every game...that is why they have a +41 run differential.

Btw, I was not trying to offend you. I like old school baseball and can give a crap less if a manager ticks off a player. Pinella physically attacked Dibble in '90....worked out fine for him. This team needs an attitude and sometimes players need to be pushed outside of their comfort zone.

Plenty of managers like Bell (doing it their way) have won and won big. I actually think he is doing a fine job...there have been some bumps along the way but generally expected for a first year manager.

I am truly excited about the future of this club.

Last year was a bizarre season too. They obviously were gawd awful under Price in March/April....something like 5-20. Played several games above .500 in May/June/July and then collapsed in Aug/Sept.

Similarly this year, 12-17 in March/April...exactly .500 in May/June. This is their chance to make a run...

I'll give you good pitching as it has been better than expected, even if the staff is mismanaged at times. For the Reds to have a fighting chance if they were to be so fortunate to get back in the race, a lot will depend on the health of Alex Wood in the 2nd Half behind Castillo & Gray. Hard to make a run with any less than that. Still see growing pains and development this season for Mahle as he's not a finished product. DeSclafani & Roark are fine as 4th of 5th Starting Options, leaving one off a postseason roster or used as a long reliever. The bullpen has been fine but overworked in the 1st half. A piece needs to be added at the deadline or called up from the minors. Probably will be the latter as the Reds rarely go into buyer's mode at the trade deadline.

Offensively, still have question marks. Still waiting for more consistency instead of just games where are run differential gets flawed beating teams by putting up 10 + runs in a handful of games and as we saw vs SF, no lead is safe. Under .500 still vs losing teams and need to improve the home record more than 2 games above .500

Would like to see more regular at bats for Casali with his offense and being top 10 in defensive WAR. Not calling for him to supplant Tucker Barnhart completely as starting catcher due to his rapport with the pitching staff. I realize its importance. Been ripped here for trashing Tucker Barnhart but just not huge on him. Defensively being #1 last year in WAR, that had been Barnhart's calling card. He's still top 10, 6th not much ahead of Curt at 10th and is a weaker offensive force with Farmer and Casali on the active roster. Mendoza line catchers don't last too long on contending teams being the primary catchers. JT Realmuto would have been huge in the offseason doing it on both sides of the plate. Best overall catcher in the game who is still rather young.

At Votto's age, hopefully he can put a streak together for more than a few games at a time. 35 years old, his best days are behind him. A future HOFer who played on only 3 winning teams thanks to fire sales and rebuilding small market franchises goes through. Other smaller teams do it better than Reds front office management for almost 30 years. Hopefully for the Reds sake, there are a couple seasons left in the tank of decent production for a playoff run but I'll point to recent examples of players like Pujols & Cabrera who also declined in performance at this age.

I have always been high on Jesse Winker on this board in the past. We need this last week of his to be the beginning of him putting the struggles behind. I don't expect him to be our HR leader and a massive source of power but more like the .290 career hitter entering the year making timely hits. Senzel has been a vital piece offensively and defensively for the Reds. Really just glad he is here and given the opportunity at the MLB level for once.

Peraza's struggles are a mystery to me given he was our hits leader last year and lost his job briefly at 2B and role as our starting SS to Iglesias, who has been a pleasant find. I'm cautiously optimistic but not setting high expectations on Scooter Gennett given his length of time injured. Hope he doesn't have ongoing effects that will linger on for the majority of the 2nd half. Dietrich has had a career year but looking more like the odd man out as the team gets healthy. Good to see Puig finally turning it around. He's definitely no .210 career hitter. On pace for a career high in steals. In a contract year, he can skyrocket his offensive numbers in GABP. Has a cannon for an arm defensively.

The antics & hard-nosed discipline of old school baseball with the likes of Billy Martin, Bobby Cox and Lou Pinella bring back good memories but not everyone can pull that off. The White Sox fell a part under Ozzie Guillen after '05, fired in Miami. Bobby Valentine couldn't make it one year with the Red Sox after Terry Francona was let go. I feel like there's a changing of the guard with the 'player's managers' finding success like Joe Maddon, AJ Hinch, Terry Francona & Alex Cora.

Hell everyone slams Dusty Baker but he is the only guy to have winning seasons with this franchise since Trader Jack was here in 2000. Haven't one since he was rode out of town and won 192 games in his 2 years at Washington. For the Reds, finishing above .500 should be our first realistic goal and then advancing in the playoffs. This is not a World Series roster right now I'll give Bell credit today for being less bullheaded in over-managing his pitchers leaving Mahle in longer after Tyler voiced his frustrations last week. Saved the bullpen only using one reliever today. It will be the life of the team if Cincinnati's fortunes turn around and get in contention.

Nice post!

Finally putting together a nice win streak but middle relief is still a problem. If they can just get to .500 around the All-Star break the Reds could be in contention as no one else is really running away with the division. In reality, I think that finishing .500 for the season is a more realistic outcome but the division does not appear to be as strong as in the past couple of years so who knows what could happen?

If the Reds are going to make up ground, they will have to beat some good teams. They don’t play a team that currently has a losing record until they face Pittsburgh on July 29. So it will literally be almost a two month stretch of games against teams who currently have winning records.

This. The pitching has been top 5 in all of baseball. The hitting has been atrocious for most of the season.

Just recently told my buddy that they needed to go 500 with Brewers & Angels then do no worse than 6-3 on their home stand.

Kev, they have gotten some good pitching but middle relief is suspect. I was watching them against the Astros last week and Amir Garrett could not throw a strike to save his life during the firs game. The second night he comes in and immediately gives up a double. However, you are correct in that the hitting has been putrid all season, especially with runners in scoring position.

Baseball season can be depressing. At least the Reds are only 6 games out of the division lead. Another team I follow started out 0-6 at home, 3-12 overall, and just lost 3 in a row to LA. Could we just get a nauseating WS between the Yankees and Dodgers over with? What 6 weeks away are meaningless NFL preseason games? I’m just glad I own a bike. One you pedal guys, ;-) Not that I don’t like Harley’s. Just scared the heck out of me. I can’t imagine anyone missed that recent nightmare in NH.

Well, Nostradamus I am not. Finished 7-8 in this 15 game stretch discussed around 6/19. Unfortunately they had a shot at the 9-6 number if they could have taken care of BIZNASS against the Tribe, but alas they did not.

Reds now sit at 41-46, 4.5 games out of 1st place or Wild Card, but are last place in the most competitive division in baseball.

For the Red Legs to make a run at division or wildcard my gut tells me they need to finish the 2nd half playing 55% ball....this would get them to roughly 82-80 and they may get in.

Really need to get same stuff out of Castillo, an even better Sonny, a consistent Disco and Roark...then hope Wood can slide in and pay off dividends.

Hitting needs to take an uptick which I've been waiting for all year!
