So I've always heard the college teams can't practice if they aren't going to a bowl game.

Doesn’t appear to have helped uk last couple years. Anyway.

1. Can the players continue to strength train on their own? No coaches
2. Can skill players practice throw and catch on their own? No coaches.3
3. Can skill players run routes and qb throw to them, again, no coaches.

Thanks!

You can do anything if coaches aren’t involved. It’s no different than what every athlete has ever done. Even in high school, we’d all do strength and conditioning or drills or pickup and the coaches couldn’t be there but it was expected of you.

The issue with college football is that the portal makes a lot of this stuff just pointless, I guess.

Next question, can the strength and conditioning coach be in the weight room at all? Or is he banned while players are lifting ?

It’s pro ball now- who and what is this NCAA you speak of? Seriously it doesn’t matter anymore!

It's a dumb rule. If you want more balance , then teams not making a bowl should get even more practice days than those making it to a bowl. The current rule helps insure those on top can stay on top

How much do bowl practices help your team now if you lose 1/4th of it to the portal every year? Seriously, UK is losing half of it's roster this year between graduation, early draft entries and portal guys. Theoretically, it would be nice to give Boley some more reps in practice but all of our good WR's except Maclin and Gilmore are leaving anyway, so what chemistry could he build with that room?

I’ve always agreed, in general, that the added practices if you made a bowl had a very exaggerated impact. And, as you point out, it means even less now.

I actually think giving guys a 3 week hiatus from football over the winter break is probably more impactful to them than the extra practices.

Coaches seem to think the extra practice time is important. This year we lost 15-20 seniors to graduation and another 25 players to the portal and early entry into the draft. Leaves us with roughly 40-45 players on the roster. Mostly young guys. The staff could spend some real quality time with these guys if practice was allowed

In the old days when college teams were run by the usual college rules versus the now NFL mini league BS with TP/NIL, it was a positive for bowl teams to still operate as a team between the last regular season game and the bowl game. The argument was that it was more beneficial for teams comprised of 100 or so athletes to stick together and continue building a solid team.

Now, that concept is non existent simply by the nature of the TP/NIL lunacy. Now teams are fighting to stay as a unit year round versus those days between the last regular season game, the bowl, and spring ball.

While the TP and NIL might be a positive for those top board athletes who can take advantage of getting more $$$ and better roster spots for themselves, it has destroyed the original culture building concept of what many of us grew up enjoying in a dedicated college team.

Of course, this is just my opinion but I can say without a doubt that my allegiance to UK football going on 30 years now has waned to the point of no 4 ticket/red lot pass renewals and not caring when or who they play. Many other factors have played into my feelings like roster management and coaching HOWEVER, I will simply look to one of the best college coaches of all time - Nick Saban - when he said he was done because primarily he felt he did not need to reinvest resources and efforts into re-recruiting his team on a daily basis (at least this was the gist of what I understood him to say).

Lastly, I used to really like this time of year watching bowl games and following other teams - now, I couldn't care less who plays or who wins. I guess I am now just here to see what others have to say and play Red's contests.

Eh. Bowl practices remind me of how much coaches over estimate their time.

Ooh, we're not going to tell South Carolina who's starting at quarterback. They won't know who to scheme for. Tee Hee. And then roll out the backup to throw 5 interceptions and score 7 points.

Or announce, "we're going to put in a package for an option play with the not-as-slow qb who can't throw. So you opponents better spend a lot of time preparing for it." Then it's a pitch back 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage in a play that could never succeed in a million years

College football has always been just the dumbest sport in how it handles pretty much everything.

“Let’s take a month off for two teams to play the national championship”

“Let’s not let the two best teams play for a title because they just play in this bowl game.”

“Let’s vote for a national champion.”

Yes….the only thing that is limited in on the field coaching.
The uk strength and conditioning coach needs to live in the gym with the holdover uk players, whipping them into peak physical condition.

Uk got pushed around on both sides of line most of the season. Especially in the second half of games.

Opposing sec teams had more stamina, and uk folded on the 2nd half all season, sans ole miss.

Inject them with roids, hgh, whatever it takes... all the other teams are outphysicalling this uk team.

And it gives coaches time to focus more on the portal.
