Apparently we can collectively break this argument/controversy into its most basic elements, and he still doesn't quite comprehend it. We can agree that:
NCAA Div I student athletes must meet specific GPA requirements to remain eligible to play.
At UNC, many basketball players took classes that were essentially fake, for all intents and purposes. Not simply just "easy." Maybe you never went to college or quite understand how that dynamic works, such as what the ratio of students vs student athletes typically is in such classes.
Whether or not the athletic department was directly involved or implicated [hint: they were], the athletes benefitted from these classes, as it bolstered their GPA and allowed them to remain eligible.
Now, try to stay with me, here. Since the African American Studies department has been discredited/exposed, what if you were to hypothetically retroactively replace said classes your basketball players took with a "0" GPA credit? Would the student athletes who took those classes have remained eligible? Is it such a big leap to suggest the fake classes were the only things standing between them and ineligibility? Furthermore, why should fake classes count towards real GPA scores which allowed them to maintain their eligibility?
That's kind of the whole thing in a nutshell. The whole academics vs sports song and dance is little more than splitting hairs. You're just playing with semantics at this point. GL97, the spin job you've put on display for us today just exposes you as someone who is quite informed on this matter and ought to know better, yet matters of ethics and common sense don't really seem to "click" with you. If you were completely ignorant of the situation, I think I'd have more pity than I do.
