My wife did hair, and (with 2 partners) owned a shop. (She sold it a few years ago) When we met, I was shocked at how much she earned. Now, to be fair, she had spent years building up a nice client base. She said that when you first start out, that it is extremely hard to make ends meet.
She's the one that told me almost nobody declares their tips (unless they were paid with a card, in which case, you have no choice.)
I asked her if there was any difference, pay wise between being a barber and a cosmetologist, besides the obvious. She said that, in her opinion, barbers do better in the long run. They have to do more cuts, but they don't take as long, and that barbers get exponentially more new "walk-in" business, and that earnings didn't fluctuate as much, week to week, as a stylists would. She didn't make a very good margin on a cut and style, she said the real money was colors and perms.
I bet my wife was one of the highest paid barbers in San Antonio at the time. She had a serious clientele. Such a good barber. She is still a master at her trade but only for me now..
She learned cutting my knockoff Ronald Reagan ole oblong head...
I am forever thankful. Our income now is much better and sustainable.
