Keep up with the entire conversation/thread.. one of the main functions of the DOE is to ensure special needs (and other groups) kids are getting an equitable and fair education. This all stems from the fact that prior to the mid-70s states weren't doing that and the federal government stepped in to ensure it (it gets into civil rights). If you were in education that long, I would hope you would recognize that all SPED kids aren't the same and there are a lot of them who can handle a "regular" classroom but need more support and help. Why in the world would we want to segregate them from "regular" students all the time? Were you a classroom teacher and/or SPED?
We need to make sure special needs kids don’t get anything special to fulfill their needs. Keep the DOE. I’m convinced.

the biggest problem I encountered were the Section 504 kids. They practically give those (504's) away, and are frequently used by parents/administrators to "bubble" students that aren't disabled, they just have extreme discipline problems, and very often ruin traditional classroom environments.
And the laws are on the books, we don't NEED the DoE to enforce them.
In any case, the DoE has nothing to do with my one and only point; that problematic children are better served outside of a traditional classroom. It was a philosophical argument, not a legal one, but some people apparently didn't understand that.

If DoE goes away I guess my next question would be which government organization would tasked with taking care of those responsibilities? I believe there needs to be some type of federal oversight to guarantee states are doing what they are legally required to do. Call me crazy, but certain states, if left to their own devices, will not keep up with the minimum requirements. Btw you never mentioned what you did for school district

As an aside.....why are people allowed to create an account that, to an old fart like myself anyway, so closely resembles the true account holder? I guess I'm just a dumbass, but I would have thought something like that would not be permitted. I mean, there's a lot I see that you can just tell at first glance they're not the real deal, those are easy to spot, but damn some of them look real.
