I’m a surgical RN. I’ve been “on call” for emergencies 24/7 since the week of Thanksgiving, minus six days scattered throughout that time. I live with the possibility of being called in anytime of day (and I have 20 minutes to get to the hospital regardless of time and weather) to do emergency c-sections and D&Cs, and routinely circulate scheduled surgeries such as pediatric dental cases. I’ve spent a few recents nights sleeping on stretchers so I'm available because the weather was bad enough to keep me from being able to arrive within 20 minutes.
