There was some level of trust before with the verified sources. People you know that did homework and were actual journalists. Mark Zuckerberg can pay himself a dollar. His networth is in the value of his holdings, in otherwords his gains are unrealized until he sells them.
For instance: similar situation is the gain taxpayers face when they purchase a home that increases in value. They don’t owe taxes on yearly increases in the home’s value. Instead, they pay taxes on the gain when they sell the house.
