Theyre missing the easiest point of the entire argument: use the same rationale as descent and distribution and or will bequeaths.
If someone dies, they can only pass title to their heirs such as they owned. An illegal immigrant has no title of citizen, therefore they cant pass any such citizenship to their children. That is easy, logical, and consistent with hundreds of years of probate law dating back to the days before America.
The tricky part is when one parent has citizenship. I think then the answer must be the child has it too. This will start the inevitable game where lib states like California will quickly change their process to allow women to name absent fathers who will all magically be citizens. So the fight will shift to this. If this is lost, then practically speaking there is not much gain.

Youd think not, but i handled cases like that before. Mom gives dads name as father and he winds up on birth certificate and boom is the presumptive father. Im sure that started with well intentions for soldiers and other men off to work back in the days before men were routinely involved beyond stopping by after a shift to see if the latest addition would work in the field or kitchen.
Thankfully nowadays there are dna tests so its easy to determine. Before dna, it was pretty wild how people determined paternity. Basically they just decided if the child looked enough like the father, paternity was established.
