I’m not advocating slavery. Give me a break. I’m saying a country who doesn’t want to be unified shouldn’t be forced especially with the major difference in values. The south would have had its own reckoning with slavery as tech advanced. I’m sure after 20 years the two countries would have become top trade partners and likely ally’s now. But they would have governed far differently. 500k people died to keep a country together that doesn’t want to be.

They're small tight-knit communities. The all go to church, markets, events together. They talk shop all week every week with each other. It's not a 9-5 job. It's a way of life. At this point let them have it. The federal government is too large to effectively govern and costs too much. States making their own rules would be much more sensible. When local politics come up on the ballot strengthen them, get people more involved. Don’t make people in Mississippi legalize gay marriage and if California wants to ban assault weapons or most firearms have at it.

Way too much power at the federal level and it really kicked in as a result of the civil war. That would have been the perfect time to recognize the cultural divide and reconcile it. Should have made a peace treaty between the USA and confederacy that ended slavery but let the south go it’s own way. The two nations would have been big time trade partners and allies but socially autonomous.
