It definitely isnt rocket science that much is for sure. People should be judged on talent and contribution/production alone.

For the next three months (and after that if you prefer), every time you hear something and think “man that sounds like a crazy thing for someone to say,” check the actual source video, and make sure you see the words in context. As a former military cop who was offered numerous civilian cop jobs (not just me, but as a group-all of us), it is going to get worse. As the conditions of the job get worse, the quality of the applicants will also get worse. I don't pretend to know the answer, but I have worked with enough guys who wanted to be civilian cops to notice trends.
And we are just about at that same point over here.
