Equating the cost of an ID to a poll tax is silly. I have to drive to go vote where I live. Should my driver's license, insurance, car taxes, car payment be considered a poll tax? I have to have everyone of those to go vote. And before you say, well they could let you mail in your vote, wouldn't it be a poll tax to have to pay the property taxes on the house I pay a mortgage on to house said mailbox? What about my insurance and mortgage payment. Are those poll taxes? I have to pay them in order to have a mailbox in order to mail in a vote. Wait, I could walk to where I vote. Ok, wouldn't my clothes and shoes be a poll tax then? What about my education in order to be able to read the ballot? Isn't that a poll tax b/c it costs me money to attain said education.

The cost of postage on mail-in ballots being a poll tax is actually making its way through the court system right now. A federal appeals court just held that it would be if that were the only way to vote, but since there are other methods it doesn't bar you from voting. We'll see if the Supreme Court agrees. Still, it reaffirms the already standing precedent that requiring paid documentation to vote is unconstitutional. Again, I don't know why this is the sticking point it seems to be. Just give people the ID and it solves the legal issues.
