This is known as Pascal’s Wager, put forth in the 17th century. There are several counter arguments, the simplest being that it’s culturally dictated. Who does the man on his deathbed look to for his everlasting salvation? Zeus, Odin, Allah, Vishnu? They all have different, often conflicting, messages and routes to eternal reward. You can't simply cover your ass by accepting Jesus since it flouts the other religions and we have no idea who's correct.

FYI don't let people fool you - 99% of people have a religion. It might not have it's books or churches, or be so clearly recognizable; but they absolutely have one.

"Believers" are taught that holding onto their convictions in the face of conflicting evidence is virtuous. They're diametrically opposed. And one makes suicide bomb martyrs.
